The initial search of the research databases produced 729 articles. 26 of the articles met the inclusion criteria and were accepted for the review. The results identified (a) the prevalence rate of depressive symptoms in college athletes, (b) risk factors contributing to the presence of depressive symptoms in college athletes, (c) current and potential measures used to prevent/alleviate depressive symptoms in college athletes.

Although certain risk factors have been identified specifically pertaining to collegiate student-athletes, researchers continue to recommend further studies that may investigate risk factors for depression in this population with the intention of preventing, mitigating, and remediating depressive symptoms. More recently, the field of nutritional psychiatry, along with nutrition literature, are showing the connection between nutrition and mental health. Therefore, as more evidence is reinforcing the important role of nutrition related to mental health concerns such as depression, the aim of this study is to examine nutritional intake as a risk factor for depression specifically within the collegiate student-athlete population.

Book excerpt: Recently, there has been an increase in the awareness of sport concussion and its potential deleterious effects as progressively more research has been conducted within the past few decades. Despite this increase, there is much about sport concussion and the consequences of sport concussion that are still unknown. The current study aims to examine the prevalence of sport concussion in NCAA collegiate student athletes. Furthermore, this study seeks to investigate the prevalence of underreporting sport concussions as well as the factors that may lead athletes not to seek help for their concussion. To better understand mental health outcomes that follow sport concussion, this study attempts to understand the potential impact sport concussion has on mental health outcomes of depression and suicide ideation. Altogether, 964 student athletes across all three NCAA divisions were surveyed about their experiences in college with sport concussion. Results of this study indicate that there may be a long-term impact of sport concussion on depression and suicide ideation. Additionally, the leading reason student athletes reported they chose to not seek help for their sport concussion was being unsure of the signs and symptoms of concussion. Implications for future research, practice, and advocacy of sport and counseling psychologists are discussed.

Book excerpt: Author's abstract: Male athletes are less likely than female athletes to seek out support services (Barnard, 2016) despite experiencing a myriad of clinical and subclinical concerns including depression (Davoren & Hwang, 2014; Wolanin et al., 2016), anxiety (Davoren & Hwang, 2014), eating disorders (Joy et al., 2016; Sundgot-Borgen & Torstveit, 2004), and substance use (NCAA, 2018). To combat the increasing rates of mental health concerns, support services are becoming more readily available for collegiate athletes (Moore, 2016). However, despite the recent effort in increasing athlete mental health support, many male athletes in particular remain reluctant to seek out such services (Barnard, 2016). Prior research has focused extensively on prevalence rates of mental health-related concerns and help-seeking barriers that prevent collegiate athletes from seeking out help (Gulliver et al., 2012; Yousaf et al., 2015), yet research remains nonexistent in exploring these areas in male collegiate athletes from a practitioner’s perspective. Thus, the present study expanded on previous research by examining the experiences of 10 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I practitioners working with male athletes and what strategies are most effective in making support services more accessible for them. A generic qualitative approach was employed and three major themes were identified: (a) presenting concerns, (b) influences to help-seeking, and (c) strategies to increase accessibility. The results of the study indicate that male collegiate athletes present with a number of mental health- and sport-related concerns, but are more likely to seek out support for sport-related concerns. Furthermore, several help-seeking influences, including barriers and facilitators, affect a male athletes’ willingness to seek out such services including stigma, coach and sport environment, cultural factors, lack of time and flexibility, and the source of referral. Strategies to address the aforementioned influences include destigmatization, coach training, practitioner diversity, service awareness and education, relationship building, and additional practitioners. Practical implications and recommendations for future research are also discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Objective: This study examined mood changes that occurred in student-athletes after they sustained a sports related concussion (SRC). Previous research has demonstrated an increase in depressive symptoms following SRC and other non-head related injuries. However, the prevalence and relative intensities of these depressive symptoms in student-athlete populations have not been fully investigated. This study will provide athletes, trainers, physicians, and other related staff with additional information about expected mood changes following injury that will allow swifter and more targeted interventions. Method: All athletes at an NCAA Division II university completed baseline assessments that included both cognitive and affective measures. Athletes who sustained a SRC during the following academic year completed the assessment battery again, including affective measures, at 24-48 hours post trauma, approximately 7-10 days post-trauma, and in follow-up evaluations as needed. A control group of same aged college peers who did not experience a concussion during the time period they participated in the study also completed a brief mood measure at three time points during the study year. Differences among the mood measure scores between the concussed student-athlete group and the control group were examined. The Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), a brief depression screener, was the primary mood measure used. Results: Initial baseline PHQ-9 scores were significantly higher for the SRC group than the control group. Relative change from baseline to post-trauma was significantly different between the groups, with the SRC group demonstrating an increase in depressive symptoms after concussion injury compared to non-injured controls. However, this increase in depressive symptoms resolved and PHQ-9 scores returned to baseline levels for the SRC group at follow-up; PHQ-9 score for the control group remained stable over time. Examination of a brief three item list of mood related symptoms from a larger symptom inventory revealed the same pattern of performance: individuals in the SRC group tended to endorse more negative mood changes with greater severity during their post-trauma evaluation than they did at baseline or follow-up. Conclusions: There is an increase in student-athlete endorsement of depressive symptoms after sustaining a concussion as compared to non-injured controls. However, this increase is not great enough to increase the mean PHQ-9 score into the clinical range, indicating post-trauma depression screening scores, on average, are still in the non-clinical range. After sustaining a concussion injury student-athletes are more likely to report depressive symptoms during the window of 24 hours to 7-10 days post-trauma. This indicates interventions targeted at alleviating mood change after concussion need to be implemented within 1-3 days post-trauma and emphasizes the importance of early detection in this population.

Various factors many student athletes face typically contribute to depression and depressive symptoms among this population. Such factors include balancing roles, sustaining injuries, overtraining, joining a new team, striving to achieve perfection, experiencing a sense of split identities, and even age and gender, among others. The literature suggests that due to the factors surrounding student athletes' roles, individuals in this population are more likely to experience symptoms of depression, including feelings of hopelessness and emotional problems, than their non-athlete counterparts. The literature also examines the phenomenon of student athletes developing a "Superman" complex and seeking to solve their depressive symptoms on their own, usually with alcohol or substance abuse. While in-school counseling services are suggested, there must be a greater focus on preventing the increasing prevalence of depressive symptoms among the student athlete population.

Book excerpt: In the span of five academic years, 23,710 injuries were reported to the National Collegiate Athlete Association (NCAA)-participating schools, and these injuries can be attained with practices, strength training workouts, and/or games. When injuries occur, negative psychological effects can occur, such as anxiety and decreased quality of life (QOL). The primary purpose of this cross-sectional study was to determine the overall mental wellness of athletes who have had long-time absence injuries in collegiate sports and to evaluate the resiliency response of these athletes. An electronic survey assessing rate of injury among sports, psychological responses to injury and QOL was distributed to athletes at one NCAA Division III school for three weeks in spring 2021. Most participants were white (89.7%), female (55.9%), and 82.3% of all participants experienced injuries during their collegiate career. However, 41.1% reported longterm injuries (more than 4 weeks) that had significant impacts on symptoms of anxiety and depression with 90% indicating moderate to high risk for poor mental wellness and decreased QOL with 31.7% indicating neutral to highly dissatisfied QOL. Many participants reported that the best way to support them during injuries was through the support of athletic trainers. Further research is needed to better understand the psychological impact of long-term injuries on college athletes as well as optimal forms of support for these athletes.
