Download or read book Quantifying the Desired Degree of Supply Chain Flexibility written by Poorna Marappa and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The dynamic nature of today's market drives the need for flexibility in supply chains. The ever-growing need for and importance of flexibility in supply chains has motivated researchers to develop frameworks to achieve supply chain flexibility. Much of the research on supply chain flexibility focuses on drivers of the need for flexibility and classification of supply chain flexibility. Existing frameworks for determining the desired degree of flexibility in supply chains give an overview methodology; however, a comprehensive framework is absent. This research proposes a comprehensive framework to quantify the desired degree of flexibility in supply chains and accordingly determine its associated configuration"--Abstract, leaf iii.

Book Modeling of Supply Chain As Flexible System

Download or read book Modeling of Supply Chain As Flexible System written by Avneet Saxena and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-05 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research aims to enrich some insights into performance improvement in supply chains operating with knowledge sharing. Such knowledge sharing supply chains have various forms of decision options. These can be viewed and modeled as flexible system. The overall theme is to enhance the research on improving the competitiveness of supply chains (viewed as flexible systems) operating under various flexibility scenarios of decision knowledge sharing (DKS) and dynamic control. The study focuses on flexibility as a means to enhance the cost performance with and without decision knowledge sharing under non-ideal (i.e. no dynamic control) and ideal (i.e. dynamic control) scenarios. The studies are further extended to develop the combined effects of supply chains flexibility types and decision knowledge sharing modes, which also include the time delays and cost penalty scenarios. The research efforts are motivated by study on supply chain flexibility, dynamic switching and with dynamic control between buyers-suppliers and the associated knowledge sharing contexts. The important research contributions are duly highlighted and their industry implications discussed, wherever applicable.

Book Understanding and Development of Supply Chain Agility and Flexibility

Download or read book Understanding and Development of Supply Chain Agility and Flexibility written by Sajad Fayezi and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper provides a review of the literature while contributing to academic understanding of the concepts of agility and flexibility within the supply chain. The research identified 83 peer-reviewed articles through a structured review technique, which is based on a three-stage refinement process. Data reduction procedures using codification, sentence strings and a review of keywords, title, abstract and conclusion were used in the search. The papers identified focused on organizational and supply chain agility and flexibility. The acknowledged gaps in understanding and development of agility and flexibility in supply chains were identified and categorized in terms of conceptual, contextual and methodological gaps. Subsequent to the gap analysis, this paper argues that effective relationship integration with key partners is a fundamental mechanism for mitigating the problem of control dissipation, which has hindered academic understanding with respect to development and application of agile and flexible capabilities in supply chains. The findings in this paper will help academics to gain a better understanding and to develop the concepts of supply chain agility and flexibility. In addition, the findings indicate that supply chain stakeholders need to address the issue of relationship integration when undertaking, or participating in agility and flexibility development programmes, so as to maximize supply chain performance. The paper concludes by highlighting implications for managers and researchers, and proposes a number of areas for future investigation.

Book Guidelines for Developing Flexible Supply Chains in a Stochastic Environment

Download or read book Guidelines for Developing Flexible Supply Chains in a Stochastic Environment written by Seratun Jannat and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To effectively analyze and design a flexible supply chain (FSC), a variety of variables need to be considered. This research presents a framework, an extension of the work of Chan et al. (2009) that identifies a more extensive yet salient set of variables for designing FSCs. This framework provides a basis for using simulation to better understand, and to better design, FSCs. The framework is used to develop a conceptual model that provides a basis for simulation analysis. The conceptual model represents a general flexible supply chain in terms of key design and system variables and incorporates many elements from the framework. The conceptual model is translated to a programmed simulation model for experimentation, built in FlexSim, that incorporates many variables from the framework. Variability plays an important role in understanding the behavior of FSCs and in developing and analyzing simulations models of FSCs. Two key supply-chain performance measures are lead time and variability in lead time. One way that has been proposed to improve both measures is to increase supplier flexibility. Through simulation this research provides a means to assess the effects of various manufacturing and logistics flexibility-related variables on lead time and its variability. This research includes several experiments that analyze the effect of supplier flexibility level, proportion of process time that is production and transportation time, and the level of variability in process time on lead time. The triangular distribution is used often in simulation when process data are not available. Thus, the triangular distribution is used in the FSC simulation model. As part of this research, a means was developed to effectively consider alternative values of the parameters of the triangular distribution during experimentation. The method enables specification and control of both moment and location parameters.

Book Drivers and Sources of Supply Flexibility

Download or read book Drivers and Sources of Supply Flexibility written by Elcio Mendonça Tachizawa and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Purpose - There has been much research on manufacturing flexibility, but supply chain flexibility is still an under-investigated area. This paper focuses on supply flexibility, the aspects of flexibility related to the upstream supply chain. Our purpose is to investigate why and how firms increase supply flexibility. Methodology/Approach - An exploratory multiple case study was conducted. We analyzed seven Spanish manufacturers from different sectors (automotive, apparel, electronics and electrical equipment). Findings - The results show that there are some major reasons why firms need supply flexibility (manufacturing schedule fluctuations, JIT purchasing, manufacturing slack capacity, low level of parts commonality, demand volatility, demand seasonality and forecast accuracy), and that companies increase this type of flexibility by implementing two main strategies: quot;to increase suppliers' responsiveness capabilityquot; and quot;flexible sourcingquot;. The results also suggest that the supply flexibility strategy selected depends on two factors: the supplier searching and switching costs and the type of uncertainty (mix, volume or delivery). Research limitations - This paper has some limitations common to all case studies, such as the subjectivity of the analysis, and the questionable generalizability of results (since the sample of firms is not statistically significant). Implications - Our study contributes to the existing literature by empirically investigating which are the main reasons for companies needing to increase supply flexibility, how they increase this flexibility, and suggesting some factors that could influence the selection of a particular supply flexibility strategy.

Book Supply Chain Flexibility Uncertainty and Firm Performance

Download or read book Supply Chain Flexibility Uncertainty and Firm Performance written by Ulf Merschmann and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Supply chain flexibility is widely seen as one major response to increasing uncertainty and competition in the marketplace. Researches and practioners acknowledge the competitive advantage of supply chain flexibility. However, flexibility is costly. Thus, a match between flexibility and environmental uncertainty seems to be an appropriate option. Empirical research on the relationship between environmental uncertainty and supply chain flexibility is sparse. This paper contributes to the emerging body of research by addressing the relationship between environmental uncertainty, supply chain flexibility, and firm performance through a survey of German manufacturing companies. We use structural equation modeling to analyze one of the key questions of operations management: Does a match between environmental uncertainty and supply chain flexibility lead to competitive advantages? More precisely, we present evidence that in uncertain environments companies with highly flexible supply chains perform better than companies with less flexible supply chains while in certain environments the opposite holds.
