Boyle and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-14 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Inventory of the Aquatic Resources in the East and North Forks of the Virgin River in and Above Zion National Park, Utah In order to preserve and protect natural resources within the National Park System, it is important to understand the underlying ecological factors controlling and maintaining critical resource attributes of the system. The factors governing the ecological components of stream systems are highly variable. In general, the structure and function of ecological communities in arid streams is a function of the nature and strength of those factors. Inventories of natural resources addressing management concerns for preserving natural systems should include analysis of the status of these factors. Preservation of the environmental conditions is critical to sustaining the natural condition of aquatic resources. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geomorphic History of the Virgin River in the Zion National Park Area, Southwest Utah This study addresses the alluvial geo morphology of the upper Virgin River in southwest Utah during the past years, the late Holocene of geologic time. The study area lies in and near Zion National Park and includes the North Fork (virgin River) in Zion Canyon below The Narrows, East Fork (virgin River) in lower Parunuweap Canyon, and the Virgin River downstream of the park to Virgin, Utah (fig. The question of how natural variations of discharge and sediment load alter the alluvial valley and channel was the research topic. This information is necessary to understand the role of dis charge variability in the recent geomorphic development of the alluvial valley, which in turn effects riparian and aquatic resources. These resources are linked to changes in the alluvial valley, because alluvium is the sub strate for riparian vegetation and the allu vial channel is the habitat of six species of native fish (deacon, written commun., Results of this study suggest that the allu vial valley has changed rapidly in response to natural discharge variations. Book An Inventory of Surface Water Resources in Grand Canyon National Park Arizona Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Inventory of Surface Water Resources in Grand Canyon National Park Arizona Classic Reprint written by Bryan T. Brown and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-18 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Inventory of Surface Water Resources in Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona The availability and seasonality of water in a primarily arid region such as Grand Canyon National Park dictate the fact that water is a precious commodity, much in demand by man and the biota. The surface water resources of Grand Canyon are characterized by a situation in which intermittent streams predominate, a ground water table as such does not exist, rainfall is seasonal and highly variable, scattered perennial water sources are related to large spring systems which arise from predictable geologic formations, and other features. This situation is clearly at contrast to the permanent presence of the Colorado River at the bottom of the canyon, or to the boo-plus inches of snow which may be recorded on the North Rim in a record winter. However, the key to water at Grand Canyon is its availability: the Colorado River is there but so inaccessible to everything with the exception of its most closely associated ecosystems of aquatic and riparian life that it is, for the most part, unavailable to the surrounding arid environment. Likewise, the North Rim snow must quickly melt, runoff, evaporate, and percolate into the extremely porous substrate. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Underground Water in the Valleys of Utah Lake and Jordan River, Utah The valleys of Utah Lake and Jordan River are situated in north - central Utah, in the extreme eastern part of the Great Basin. The lofty Wasatch Range (pl. I), the western most Oi the Rocky Mountain system, limits the valleys on the east, and relatively low basin ranges - the Oquirrh, Lake, and East Tintic mountains - determine them on the west. The valleys trend north and south, and are almost separated by the low east-west Traverse Range, the Slopes of which constitute a dam for Utah Lake, which drains through Jordan River to Great Salt Lake. The area under consideration is the most populous and flourishing part of the State. Salt Lake City and Provo, the first and third cities in the State, and many other thriving settlements are there located. At' Bingham Junction and Murray a number of smelters treat the ores from near-by mines, but agriculture is the main industry. Water for irriga tion is supplied by mountain streams, and intensive farming is successfully. Pursued. The practice of irrigation was begun by the Mormon pioneers in 1847, and has been dis cussed in several publications; little attention, however, has been given to the under ground water resources, and, so far as the writer is aware, they have not before been described. The present paper outlines conditions Of occurrence of the subterranean waters and describes their development in the valleys of Utah Lake and Jordan River.
