Book excerpt: Do you need to be a genius to be good at chess? What does it take to become a Grandmaster? Can computer programmes beat human intuition in gameplay? The Psychology of Chess is an insightful overview of the roles of intelligence, expertise, and human intuition in playing this complex and ancient game. The book explores the idea of ‘practice makes perfect’, alongside accounts of why men perform better than women in international rankings, and why chess has become synonymous with extreme intelligence as well as madness. When artificial intelligence researchers are increasingly studying chess to develop machine learning, The Psychology of Chess shows us how much it has already taught us about the human mind.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both chess play and psychological research offer rewards to their participants in the form of intellectual satisfaction. It seems to follow that combining these two forms of activity, by carrying out research into chess play, should be a particularly engaging enterprise. In the mid-1980s enough was now known for it to be feasible to tell a reasonably satisfying story by piecing together the accumulated results of experiments on chess. There were remaining gaps in knowledge, but the structure of chess skill had at least become sufficiently evident to exhibit where the gaps lay. Originally published in 1985, this book was an attempt to summarize the progress that had been made at the time, recounting some of the components of the research process while describing how the chessplayer seems to think, imagine, and decide.

Book excerpt: This book is one woman's report from the front lines of digital dating. Grace Anderson, a novelist with grown children, an ex-husband, an age beginning with the number "4" and an acute case of writer's block, turns to cyberspace for diversion/inspiration. She finds it in the form of a bright, charming, articulate, obviously accomplished man she meets in a chat room late one evening. The two of them begin to build a relationship the old-fashioned way - with their words and their imaginations. When her cyberspace swain turns three-dimensional, the good news is that he is indeed bright, charming, articulate, obviously accomplished, and better yet, drop-dead handsome. The more, interesting news is that he is a Princeton University Wunderkind, twenty-eight years her junior--younger than both of Grace's sons. So, just what happens when the perfect love meets a most socially unacceptable age gap? The road to finding that out will captivate you. The storyline is timely... and the romance... timeless.

Download or read book Priest Holmes written by Bill Althaus and published by Sports Publishing LLC. This book was released on 2003 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps the most unassuming and unlikely hero in Kansas City sports history, Priest Holmes has already etched his name in the Chiefs' record books. He led the Chiefs in rushing for the second year in a row in 2002 and was named the NFL's Offensive Player of the Year by the Associated Press. The five-foot-nine package of dynamite led the NFL with 24 touchdowns and was on pace to break the single-season mark of 26, set by St. Louis's Marshall Faulk in 2000, but missed the final two games of the season with a hip injury. Holmes has a love of the game that can be traced back to his prep days at John Marshall High School in San Antonio, Texas. He went on to enjoy a solid career at the University of Texas and beyond. The story of Priest Holmes's rise to the top of the NFL is the stuff legends are made of. The devout father of two young boys has risen to new heights in the annals of the NFL. Perhaps the only thing more difficult than tackling Holmes is getting him to open up about his success on the playing field. That's why his teammates, opposing players, his coaches and some very special fans will paint a vivid picture of what Priest Homes means to Kansas City -- both on and off the field -- in Priest Holmes: From Sidelines to Center Stage.
Download or read book Personality and the Teaching of Composition written by George H. Jensen and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1989 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers seem to have made little progress toward better understanding the nature and importance of individual differences. The authors present a paradigm to explain such differences so that researchers will be better able to study the wide variety of approaches that students employ. The volume synthesizes and expands the large body of research on individual differences, and shows how personality theory can explain the kinds of individual differences found in writing processes, written products, teaching styles, and other areas. The authors discuss how personality theory can be used to help students develop their writing skills in a process more suited to their personality type, and demonstrate how teachers' responses to student writing is to some extent a reflection of their personality type.
Download or read book To Sell Is Human written by Daniel H. Pink and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2012-12-31 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Look out for Daniel Pink’s new book, When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing #1 New York Times Business Bestseller #1 Wall Street Journal Business Bestseller #1 Washington Post bestseller From the bestselling author of Drive and A Whole New Mind, and teacher of the popular MasterClass on Sales and Persuasion, comes a surprising--and surprisingly useful--new book that explores the power of selling in our lives. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, one in nine Americans works in sales. Every day more than fifteen million people earn their keep by persuading someone else to make a purchase. But dig deeper and a startling truth emerges: Yes, one in nine Americans works in sales. But so do the other eight. Whether we’re employees pitching colleagues on a new idea, entrepreneurs enticing funders to invest, or parents and teachers cajoling children to study, we spend our days trying to move others. Like it or not, we’re all in sales now. To Sell Is Human offers a fresh look at the art and science of selling. As he did in Drive and A Whole New Mind, Daniel H. Pink draws on a rich trove of social science for his counterintuitive insights. He reveals the new ABCs of moving others (it's no longer "Always Be Closing"), explains why extraverts don't make the best salespeople, and shows how giving people an "off-ramp" for their actions can matter more than actually changing their minds. Along the way, Pink describes the six successors to the elevator pitch, the three rules for understanding another's perspective, the five frames that can make your message clearer and more persuasive, and much more. The result is a perceptive and practical book--one that will change how you see the world and transform what you do at work, at school, and at home.
Download or read book 50 Poison Pieces written by Lauren Goodkind and published by . This book was released on 2017-04-27 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lauren Goodkind, who is a respected chess teacher in the San Francisco bay area, wrote 50 Poison Pieces, a fun puzzle book to help her students and any novice chess player to avoid capturing unprotected pieces that look safe to capture, which are actually poison! Taking a poison piece gives your opponent the potential to execute a basic tactic, such as a fork or skewer. You'll see how taking a poison piece can lead to losing your valuable pieces for no good reason. It might even lead to losing the entire game! In each of the 50 unique puzzles, you are asked to figure out why capturing an unprotected piece is a mistake, or in other words, the poison piece. Next, you turn the page to learn why capturing that piece is the poison piece. Then immediately you are shown two alternative moves. One is bad and will lead to a losing position. But the other move puts you on track to a win. Which move will you pick? By learning to avoid capturing poison pieces, you will start to understand and use the most important chess strategy of all: always think ahead! Players rated under 1000 will especially benefit from 50 Poison Pieces. Here's what notable members of the chess community are saying about Lauren's powerful book: "For those just learning the game of chess, I can enthusiastically recommend Lauren Goodkind's unique new book on safe captures. This is an essential concept often dismissed with a few examples of captures of undefended pieces. What she does is to load each capture with a tricky reply such as a skewer, pin or fork, forcing the student to look more than superficially deep. A splendid volume which will be invaluable to both students and teachers alike." FM Eric Schiller Author of More than 100 Chess Books, International Arbiter and Chess Coach "During my 29 years of running a very successful chess program, I have looked for ways to aid young children in analyzing the consequences of their moves. Most puzzle books and programs deal with checkmates in one or more moves or ask for the best first move in a complex middle or endgame. I like Ms. Goodkind's poison piece approach, not only because of the uncluttered problem solving, but also because her explanations for the moves provide guidance to the student to aid their critical thinking about why a pawn or piece was poison. I tested it with a few young players and I saw their eyes light up when they began to understand the need to use their thought processes and not just their fingers. I will be recommending 50 Poison Pieces to my students and to my instructors to use with their students who can be classified as intermediate or advanced beginners." Alan M. Kirshner, Ph.D. Director of Weibel Elementary School Chess & Winner of numerous State Championships, Two Open Nationals and Six All-Girls Nationals "This book should be in every student's and teacher's repertoire. Berkeley Chess School will certainly include it in theirs. With this book, Lauren has produced an easy to read system for understanding the poisoned piece, a subject that is rarely addressed elsewhere." Elizabeth Shaughnessy President and Founder, Berkeley Chess School "Lauren Goodkind and I first became acquainted, ten years ago, as fellow participants in the Sojourner Truth Tournament for Women. Over the past decade, our friendship has blossomed, and we have enjoyed many good games and memorable tournament experiences, as a result. When I heard she was writing a book, I was very excited for her, and feel that Lauren is a worthy opponent, a capable chess instructor, and a positive role-model for her many students. I am, therefore, pleased to endorse the collection of puzzles contained in 50 Poison Pieces, as a valuable resource for beginning players to use to improve, as they, undoubtedly, begin their journey on the road to chess mastery. This book is informative and fun." Jessica Lauser U.S. Blind Competitor and Blitz Expert

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you think living the Christian life is hard? Many do, and it can be. Do I really have to forgive everybody? Do I really have to tell others about Jesus? It is filled with religious rituals and commands that may seem like a dictator is at work. It may seem exasperating at times. If this is true for you, you may have found the love of God but not the love for God. When you fall in love, the commands of God are no longer difficult. The Salvation of Maven Storm helps the Christian develop this covenant relationship and dispels the idea of Christian slavery. Just as Jesus told parables to help the people understand God and heaven, The Salvation of Maven Storm uses personal stories to explain theological truths. It explains how Christianity is about a relationship and not a bunch of rituals and rules to follow. It explains exactly why and what God wants and expects of this relationship. It explains the riches God offers us in return. Overall, the entire book is about what it is like to be in a covenant relationship with Jesus. The relationship is so much more than life itself.
