Book Introspection and Contemporary Poetry

Download or read book Introspection and Contemporary Poetry written by Alan Bacher Williamson and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1984 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this bold defense of so-called confessional poetry, Alan Williamson shows us that much of the best writing of the past twenty-five years is about the sense of being or having a self, a knowable personal identity. The difficulties posed by this subject help explain the fertility of contemporary poetic experiment--from the jaggedness of the later work of Robert Lowell to the montage--like methods of John Ashbery, from the visual surrealism of James Wright and W. S. Merwin to the radical plainness of Frank Bidart. Williamson examines these and other poets from a psychological perspective, giving an especially striking reading of Sylvia Plath.

Book The Light and Other Collected Poems

Download or read book The Light and Other Collected Poems written by Janet Scott McDaniel and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-06 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE LIGHT AND OTHER COLLECTED POEMS- Ms. McDaniel's first book of poetry- reflects the wide range of human emotions: love and loss in all its manifestations, redemption and discovery, ultimate joy and the depths of introspection. The reader is invited behind closed doors to witness the passions and the gut-wrenching spirit of that which is a personal and protected space. Ms. McDaniel's poems weave a rich tapestry, clear and eloquent, of life in all its wonder and challenge. Photographs and background stories make this an even more intimate journey as the voice of the poet emerges from conflict and struggle stronger than ever. Many of the pieces, while profoundly moving to any reader, are particularly empowering to women. Her poems strike the heart and reach into the soul, charting a unique new path into contemporary poetry. THE LIGHT leaves us touched by the mastery of the words and the emotions they invoke.

Book Why Write Poetry

Download or read book Why Write Poetry written by Jeannine Johnson and published by Fairleigh Dickinson Univ Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poets have long been defending poetry in prose, and essays by Sidney, Shelley, and others are a familiar and important part of the Anglo-American literary tradition. This book identifies and examines a related genre - the verse defense of poetry - which shares the same impulse that has led to the composition of prose essays: namely, the desire to protect poetry from its detractors and to promote its value as a vital human endeavor. In the last century or so, this impulse to engage questions of poetry's value in poems has become increasingly widespread, and it has dominated the careers of at least five poets: H.D., Wallace Stevens, W. H. Auden, Adrienne Rich, and Geoffrey Hill. Though these poets espouse very different aesthetic principles, they, like many of their contemporaries, have repeatedly turned to apology in their verse. At first glance, this seems an odd gesture, given that the readers and writers of poetry are those who least need convincing of poetry's worthiness. But questioning poetry in verse is a form of lyric introspection that is productive and well-suited for a modern poet. characterized as one of indifference, defense helps these authors make a claim for poetry's cultural relevance, as well as for its private profit. Jeannine Johnson is a Preceptor in Expository Writing at Harvard University.

Book Journey of Mind

Download or read book Journey of Mind written by Tj Morgan Maddock and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2023-08-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the modern poetic arena, where the balance between authenticity and artifice often teeters precariously, TMM's "Journey of Mind" emerges as a striking odyssey of introspection and raw emotional exploration. The collection, at once intimate and expansive, skillfully maneuvers the vast terrains of the human experience while always retaining a deeply personal touch. One of the collection's most salient strengths is its unwavering commitment to the sensual landscape of its chosen themes. From the almost tangible chill of "Hands In the Cold" to the rhythmic allure of "Traffic Lights", there's an undeniable tactility to TMM's verses that is reminiscent of the Romantic poets, albeit with a contemporary twist. Yet, as with any poetic work that aims to delve deep into the labyrinth of human emotion, "Journey of Mind" risks, at times, teetering on the precipice of self-indulgence. The yearning in "Craving A Touch" or the tempestuous introspection of "Storms Of A Shadow'd Heart" sometimes feels stretched just beyond their breaking point, demanding perhaps a touch more restraint or perhaps, counterintuitively, even deeper exploration. Nevertheless, TMM's craftsmanship is evident. Their adept manipulation of meter and choice diction is a masterclass in modern lyrical construction. The poignant "Into the Wild" stands as a testament to this, juxtaposing man's ancient roots with his often estranged modern existence, echoing sentiments of poets like Frost but with an undeniably fresh voice. Where the collection truly excels, however, is in its dialogue with the reader. As TMM navigates the intricacies of desire in "Impatient" or time's relentless march in "Ceaseless", the reader is drawn into an intimate conversation, one that challenges and provokes. "Journey of Mind" is not content to be a passive reading experience; it demands engagement, reflection, and, at times, confrontation. In conclusion, "Journey of Mind" is a bold and evocative addition to contemporary poetry. While it occasionally teeters between lyrical brilliance and over-extension, there's no denying the potent force of TMM's voice. This collection serves as both a mirror and a window, reflecting the reader's own experiences while offering a tantalizing glimpse into the vast landscape of human emotion. It is a journey well worth taking.
