Book Ideas in God According to Saint Thomas Aquinas

Download or read book Ideas in God According to Saint Thomas Aquinas written by Vivian Boland and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-12-06 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work examines the role of the doctrine of 'divine ideas' in the theology of Thomas Aquinas, a question which remains controversial. Aquinas received this doctrine in two distinct forms, from Augustine and Dionysius. The historical origins and development of this twofold tradition are traced from Plato and Aristotle, through Hellenistic philosophy, to the patristic and medieval periods. In Aquinas' account of God's knowledge, of the Word of God, of Creation and of Providence the doctrine of divine ideas plays a key role. Various strands of neoplatonist thought are clearly important for him but it is Aristotle who is of greatest significance for Aquinas' sustained and original re-thinking of the doctrine. A study of this question provides a fresh perspective on the nature of Aquinas' unique synthesis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work proposes a new proof of the existence of God, based on a development of elements found in Patristic and Scholastic philosophical tradition, in particular of St. Augustine, St. Anselm and St. Thomas Aquinas. Traditionally the existence of God has been seen in relation to the essence of Truth: its unchanging and eternal essence is used as a proof of the eternal existence of a personal God. The strategy of our demonstration is to investigate the concept of Truth from the perspective of a definition, which can be called “inclusive”: it proposes to formulate, complementary to formal, purely abstract definitions of Truth, also a definition that includes the real personal elements that are necessarily implied in the abstract definition. It shows the necessity of including in it, in the first place, the primary Real Being, God, which is also the primary Intellect; and, related to it, our finite, human intellect, not necessary in itself, but of course essential to our very nature. Claudio Pierantoni is Professor of Medieval Philosophy at the University of Chile (Universidad de Chile) and Professor of Latin Literature at the Universidad de los Andes, Chile. He was former Professor of Church History and Patrology at the Faculty of Theology of the Catholic Pontifical University of Chile (Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile).

Book Engaging with Thomas Aquinas

Download or read book Engaging with Thomas Aquinas written by Leonardo De Chirico and published by Inter-Varsity Press. This book was released on 2024-05-16 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The influence of Thomas Aquinas on Western theology is beyond dispute, yet his is a contested legacy. In current evangelical studies, there is an emerging infatuation with Thomas, especially as far as his theological metaphysics is concerned. On the occasion of the eighth centenary of Thomas Aquinas, Engaging with Thomas Aquinas is a thoughtful introduction aimed at presenting the main contours of the doctor's complex legacy and critically evaluating it, especially in areas where the "Roman Catholic" Thomas eclipses the "classical" theology which is attracting renewed attention in evangelical circles. Engaging with Thomas Aquinas contributes a thoughtful analysis from an evangelical viewpoint, offering answers to complex questions such as: - Is the thought of Thomas and Thomism(s) the same? - What strengths and dangers does the legacy of Thomas Aquinas present to evangelical thought? - How can Rome's chief doctor be, at the same time, a reference point for evangelical theology? In this book, De Chirico offers an evangelical a framework to think through this contested thinker's legacy, as well as an invitation to the inquiring reader to consider an alternative.

Book Metaphysical Themes in Thomas Aquinas III

Download or read book Metaphysical Themes in Thomas Aquinas III written by John F. Wippel and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2020-09-30 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metaphysical Themes in Thomas Aquinas III is Msgr. John Wippel’s third volume dedicated to the metaphysical thought of Thomas Aquinas. After an introduction, this volume of collected essays begins with Wippel’s interpretation of the discovery of the subject of metaphysics by a special kind of judgment (“separation”). In subsequent chapters, Wippel turns to the relationship between faith and reason, exploring what are known as the preambles of faith. This is followed by two chapters on the important contributions by Cornelio Fabro on Aquinas’s distinction between essence and esse and on participation. The volume continues with articles on Aquinas’s view of creation as a preamble of faith, Aquinas’s much-disputed defense of unicity of substantial form in creatures, his account of the separated soul’s natural knowledge, and Aquinas’s understanding of evil in his De Malo 1. The volume concludes with an article comparing Bonaventure, Aquinas, and Godfrey of Fontaines on the metaphysical composition of angelic beings. Most of these issues were disputed during Aquinas’s time by some of his contemporaries, and the proper understanding of each continues to be debated by various students of his thought today. Wippel’s purpose, therefore, is to help clarify our understanding of Aquinas’s thought on each of these topics, a task that requires the careful analysis of primary sources and of secondary literature and attention to the relative chronology of his writing.

Book Storia di san Tommaso d Aquino

Download or read book Storia di san Tommaso d Aquino written by Guglielmo Da Tocco and published by Jaca Book. This book was released on 2021-01-28T00:00:00+01:00 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
