Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If Phonetics is a comparatively recent subject for European students of foreign languages and is eyed by them with some sus picion as an invention that is meant to make their studies difficult, it is even more so with English Phonetics for African students. Have not Africans been learning English for over a century, and with good results in many cases, without giving a thought to its phonetics? Why introduce this new subject and add to the number of books they have to read and the number of examinations they have to pass before they can get their degree? Yet if the study of a foreign language is to be up to date its phonetics cannot be neglected; on the contrary, it is as important as the study of its spelling, if not more so. With the invention of radio and telephone, of gramophone and tape-recorders, the importance of the spoken word has increased immensely and it is far more essential now than it was a hundred years ago that those who learn a foreign language should learn to speak it properly. Thus a new subject has been added to the schedule of language students and teachers: the study and practice of the sounds of the language, and for the teachers also the study of how to teach these sounds.

Download or read book Phonetics written by Martin J Ball and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-04 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In their comprehensive new introduction to phonetics, Ball and Rahilly offer a detailed explanation of the process of speech production, from the anatomical initiation of sounds and their modification in the larynx, through to the final articulation of vowels and consonants in the oral and nasal tracts. This textbook is one of the few to give a balanced account of segmental and suprasegmental aspects of speech, showing clearly that the communication chain is incomplete without accurate production of both individual speech sounds (segmental features) and aspects such as stress and intonation (suprasegmental features). Throughout the book the authors provide advice on transcription, primarily using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). Students are expertly guided from basic attempts to record speech sounds on paper, to more refined accounts of phonetic detail in speech. The authors go on to explain acoustic phonetics in a manner accessible both to new students in phonetics, and to those who wish to advance their knowledge of key pursuits in the area, including the sound spectrograph. They describe how speech waves can be measured, as well as considering how they are heard and decoded by listeners, discussing both physiological and neurological aspects of hearing and examining the methods of psychoacoustic experimentation. A range of instrumentation for studying speech production is also presented. The next link is acoustic phonetics, the study of speech transmission. Here the authors introduce the basic concepts of sound acoustics and the instrumentation used to analyse the characteristics of speech waves. Finally, the chain is completed by examining auditory phonetics, and providing a fascinating psychoacoustic experimentation, used to determine what parts of the speech signal are most crucial for listener understanding. The book concludes with a comprehensive survey and description of modern phonetic instrumentation, from the sound spectrograph to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Download or read book Exploring English Phonetics written by Tatjana Paunović and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2011-11-15 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring English Phonetics is conceived as a meeting point of the diverse perspectives, approaches and interests of scholars working in the field of English Phonetics worldwide. The focus of the volume is on the topics in the domain of language varieties, mutual language influences, and also on issues pertaining to the research, study, and teaching of English to speakers from other language backgrounds. Authors raise a number of novel, motivating and noteworthy questions, relevant from the point of view of either phonetic research or phonetic training and EFL teaching. These questions cover a wide range of phonetic topics: the nature of vowels and consonants in several dominating varieties of English, the phenomena of connected speech and the nature of intonation, issues in the methodology of phonetic research, problems encountered by speakers of other languages striving to acquire English pronunciation, and attitudes to different native and non-native varieties of English. Despite such a broad variety of topics, the volume offers a unifying approach to the study of speech and puts forward intriguing results gained by original research. Whatever their focus and sample size, most chapters deal with the English spoken and learned by speakers of other languages, thus highlighting both the current status of English as the language of global communication, and the international orientation of this volume.
