Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Economic Problems: For Students and Teachers As we watch from our vantage point of the - present the spectacle of man's advance through the ages from a state of savagery to his present stage of civilization, one fact strikes us with particular force: That advance has consisted in large part of increases in man's command over the material goods which gratify his wants. For the most part general intellectual improvement and moral advance have waited on developments in the ability to produce material goods. Book Modern Economic Problems Classic Reprint

Download or read book Modern Economic Problems Classic Reprint written by Frank A. Fetter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-09 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Economic Problems The outlook and sympathies that are expressed or tacitly assumed throughout this work are not so much those personal to the author as they are those of our present day American democratic society, taken at about its center of gravity. When the people generally feel difierently as to the ends to be at tained, a different public policy must be formulated, tho the economic analysis may not need to be changed. Therefore, in some cases, the author has discussed merely the economic as pect, or has referred to the general principles treated in vol ume one, and has purposely refrained from expressing his personal judgment as to the best policy for the moment. The present volume was planned some years ago as a re vision of a part of the author's earlier text, The Principles of Economics The intervening years have, however, been so replete with notable economic and social legislation and have witnessed the growth of a wider public interest in so many economic subjects, that both in range and in treatment this work necessarily grew to be more than a revision. Except in a few chapters, occasional sentences and paragraphs are all of the specific features of the older text that remain. Sug gestive of the rapid changes occurring in the economic field is the fact that a number of statements made in the manuscript a few months or a few weeks ago had to be amended in the proof sheets to accord with recent events. The author's debt for information, inspiration, and assist ance in various phases of the work is a large one. The debt is owing to many, - authors, colleagues, and students. A few of the sources that have been drawn upon will be indicated in a pamphlet following the plan of the Manual of References and Exercises in Economics, already published for use in connection with Volume I; but the limits of space will prevent a complete enumeration. I wish, however, in particular, to acknowledge gratefully the aid and friendly criticisms given in connection with the chapters on money and banking, onlabor problems, and on the principles of insurance, respec tively, by my colleagues, E. W. Kemmerer, D. A. Mccabe, and N Carothers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Introduction to Economics Classic Reprint

Download or read book Introduction to Economics Classic Reprint written by John Roscoe Turner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 662 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to Economics This book is an outgrowth of classroom discussions. It contains in substance the talks on economics which have been made, for the past eleven years, to my Classes in Cornell and New York Universities. NO apology is offered for the fact that this volume is limited to a discussion of principles. Even the concluding chapters on corporations are designed to exemplify princi ples. The time has long since passed when a single volume can treat exhaustively the whole field of economics. I shall be more than content if this work justifies the scope indicated for it in the title - Introduction to Economics. Designed as an introduction, this book will serve as a means to the end of a more intelligent study of economic questions. It does not dispense with the necessity of read ing the many excellent treatises devoted to the different phases of economics; rather it distinctly calls for such read ings. It merely prepares the mind of the student for the thought contained in the more advanced and specialized works on the subject and the practical applications they reveal. Book Economics an Introduction for the General Reader Classic Reprint

Download or read book Economics an Introduction for the General Reader Classic Reprint written by Henry Clay and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-11 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Economics an Introduction for the General Reader AN apology is needed for adding another to the large num ber of books that attempt to' deal with the whole subject matter of Economics in a single volume. I offer two pleas in extenuation. The first is that nearly all existing introduc tions to the subject are intended primarily for the University student. The pious wish is generally expressed that they may be of use also to the general reader; but the general reader's special needs and opportunities are seldom borne in mind. His needs are different, inasmuch as he has not the guidance of a teacher and the leisure of the student; on the other hand, his opportunities are some compensation for these disadvan tages, since he has usually a practical interest in the economic system and an experience of its working, which the academic student lacks. It seemed, therefore, worth while to try to do for the economic organization as a whole what Bagehot and Mr. Hartley Withers have done for a part of it, the credit system to explain the principles of its construction and working in the language of ordinary life, and with reference to the experience and interests of the ordinary man. While it would need a Bagehot to succeed, I hope that the mere attempt will have done something to make it easier for the general reader to perceive the bearing of economic studies on the political and social problems in which he is interested. This book was released on 2018-02-14 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual to an Introduction to Economics The object of this chapter is to explain the nature and. Scope of the subject and the method by which it may be studied. Too much stress should not be laid on the method of mathematical logic treated in the passage describing the syllogism. If a course in logic is given in the school an opportunity for correlation will be presented, but otherwise the bare idea of the method is all that is necessary. The essential points are, the meaning of the term economic law, and the relation of economics to other social and physical sciences. Book Descriptive Economics

Download or read book Descriptive Economics written by Louis Lafayette Williams and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-13 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Descriptive Economics: An Introduction to Economic Science The work is a wide departure from the ordinary plan of most elementary works on Political Economy, or, as it is preferably called, Economics. These works generally commence with an abstract discussion of wealth or value. In the following pages the terms wealth and value are nowhere used in a technical sense, and the same is true of most of the technical terms of Economics. At the same time, however, the theories to which these terms give rise, are indirectly discussed and all the well known propositions of Economics are clearly and fully set forth. It is hoped that the student and reader will find here the collection of economic phenomena, classified and arranged as required for the more abstract reasoning and generalizations relating to the higher branches of the subject. Book An Introduction to Political Economy Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Introduction to Political Economy Classic Reprint written by Richard T. Ely and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Political Economy It has seemed to the author that one difficulty with many economic treatises is that they have no one clear aim, that they are, so to speak, straddles. This difficulty he is seeking to avoid, and consequently he has had only one class in mind in this revision. It is first of all the general reader for whom the book is designed, and it is the general reader whose needs have been kept constantly in view. For him it primarily exists, and to his requirements have been entirely subordinated all considerations based on its possible use as a text-book. Book excerpt: This book presents research in the old era about the individual elements of economic doctrines that form the basis of the formation of economic science. The aim of the first chapter is to consider the most important economic views (State economic function, budget model, statistics, ownership, etc.) in the ancient epoch (Egypt, Iraq, China, India, etc.). The second chapter deals with the most prominent economic considerations (economics, labor division, money, goods, property, management, etc.) of the famous representatives of the ancient epoch (Ancient Greece, Old Rome), although they did not specifically research economic issues (especially in ancient Greece). The third chapter reveals "mature" economic considerations formed in Western Europe, Kievan Rus', Georgia, Russia, Tunisia etc.) that have finally laid the foundation for economics as a science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Engineering Economics AS stated by Lavis, The application of economics to railroad location and construction consists in the proper adjustment and balance between the first cost as exemplified by the straight line of uniform rate of gradient and the first cost Of a line or a series of lines which deviates from it in more or less degree, and the difference in cost of operation due to this deviation (whether lateral or vertical), and the consequent introduction of added resistance and, therefore, added cost of operation. In railroad engineering there are, certainly, quite complicated preliminary economic problems to solve, among which may be mentioned the following.
