Book Descriptive Inorganic Coordination and Solid state Chemistry

Download or read book Descriptive Inorganic Coordination and Solid state Chemistry written by Glen E. Rodgers and published by Cengage Learning. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This proven, sophomore-level text introduces the basics of coordination, solid-state, and descriptive main-group chemistry in a uniquely accessible manner, featuring a "less is more" approach. This approach allows you to present concepts and applications that you find particularly important and fascinating. Consistent with the "less is more" philosophy, the book does not review topics covered in introductory courses, but rather moves directly into topics central to inorganic chemistry. Written in a conversational prose style that is enjoyable and easy to understand, this book presents not only the basic theories and methods of inorganic chemistry (in three self-standing sections), but also a great deal of the history and applications of the discipline. The new edition features new art, more diversified applications, and a new icon system. And to better help students understand how the seemingly disparate topics of the periodical table connect, the book offers revised coverage of the author's "Network of Interconnected Ideas" on new full color endpapers, as well as on a convenient tear-out card. The author's presentation does not assume prerequisites of organic or physical chemistry.

Book excerpt: Intended for first- and second-year undergraduates, this introduction to solid-state chemistry includes practical examples of applications and modern developments to offer students the opportunity to apply their knowledge in real-life situations. It aims to provide students with a thorough understanding of the traditional knowledge of crystal structures: lattices, unit cells, close packing, and octahedral and tetrahedral holes and their occupation by various ions in the well-known crystal structures. This descriptive work is augmented by free-electron and band theory. Links to other branches of chemistry and practical examples are emphasized, as are the links back to band theory and crystal structures. For this second edition, the book has been updated throughout and has two new chapters, one on X-ray diffraction techniques and another on solid-state preparative methods, as well as new sections on symmetry and ferroelectrics.

Book excerpt: This textbook provides essential information for students of inorganic chemistry or for chemists pursuing self-study. The presentation of topics is made with an effort to be clear and concise so that the book is portable and user friendly. Inorganic Chemistry 2E is divided into five major themes (structure, condensed phases, solution chemistry, main group and coordination compounds) with several chapters in each. There is a logical progression from atomic structure to molecular structure to properties of substances based on molecular structures, to behavior of solids, etc. The author emphasizes fundamental principles-including molecular structure, acid-base chemistry, coordination chemistry, ligand field theory, and solid state chemistry -and presents topics in a clear, concise manner. There is a reinforcement of basic principles throughout the book. For example, the hard-soft interaction principle is used to explain hydrogen bond strengths, strengths of acids and bases, stability of coordination compounds, etc. The book contains a balance of topics in theoretical and descriptive chemistry. New to this Edition: New and improved illustrations including symmetry and 3D molecular orbital representationsExpanded coverage of spectroscopy, instrumental techniques, organometallic and bio-inorganic chemistryMore in-text worked-out examples to encourage active learning and to prepare students for their exams . Concise coverage maximizes student understanding and minimizes the inclusion of details students are unlikely to use. . Discussion of elements begins with survey chapters focused on the main groups, while later chapters cover the elements in greater detail. . Each chapter opens with narrative introductions and includes figures, tables, and end-of-chapter problem sets.

Book Physical Inorganic Chemistry

Download or read book Physical Inorganic Chemistry written by S. F. A. Kettle and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: GEORGE CHRISTOU Indiana University, Bloomington I am no doubt representative of a large number of current inorganic chemists in having obtained my undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in the 1970s. It was during this period that I began my continuing love affair with this subject, and the fact that it happened while I was a student in an organic laboratory is beside the point. I was always enchanted by the more physical aspects of inorganic chemistry; while being captivated from an early stage by the synthetic side, and the measure of creation with a small c that it entails, I nevertheless found the application of various theoretical, spectroscopic and physicochemical techniques to inorganic compounds to be fascinating, stimulating, educational and downright exciting. The various bonding theories, for example, and their use to explain or interpret spectroscopic observations were more or less universally accepted as belonging within the realm of inorganic chemistry, and textbooks of the day had whole sections on bonding theories, magnetism, kinetics, electron-transfer mechanisms and so on. However, things changed, and subsequent inorganic chemistry teaching texts tended to emphasize the more synthetic and descriptive side of the field. There are a number of reasons for this, and they no doubt include the rise of diamagnetic organometallic chemistry as the dominant subdiscipline within inorganic chemistry and its relative narrowness vis-d-vis physical methods required for its prosecution.

Book excerpt: If organic chemistry is defined as the chemistry of hydrocarbon compounds and their derivatives, inorganic chemistry can be described broadly as the chemistry of "every-thing else." This includes all the remaining elements in the periodic table, as well as carbon, which plays a major role in many inorganic compounds. From the fundamentals and basics to the advanced frontiers of research, the book offers a classic introduction to inorganic chemistry that no other book can match. The book is designed to be modern and most student-friendly yet, covering both the theoretical and descriptive aspects of inorganic chemistry in presentation. The author emphasizes fundamental principles including molecular structure, acid-base chemistry, coordination chemistry, theoretical chemistry, and solid state chemistry - and presents topics in a clear, concise manner. The book maximizes student understanding and minimizes the inclusion of details students are unlikely to use.

Book Integrated Approach to Coordination Chemistry

Download or read book Integrated Approach to Coordination Chemistry written by Rosemary A. Marusak and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2007-03-30 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coordination chemistry is the study of compounds formed between metal ions and other neutral or negatively charged molecules. This book offers a series of investigative inorganic laboratories approached through systematic coordination chemistry. It not only highlights the key fundamental components of the coordination chemistry field, it also exemplifies the historical development of concepts in the field. In order to graduate as a chemistry major that fills the requirements of the American Chemical Society, a student needs to take a laboratory course in inorganic chemistry. Most professors who teach and inorganic chemistry laboratory prefer to emphasize coordination chemistry rather than attempting to cover all aspects of inorganic chemistry; because it keeps the students focused on a cohesive part of inorganic chemistry, which has applications in medicine, the environment, molecular biology, organic synthesis, and inorganic materials.
