Download or read book Method and Metaphysics written by Jonathan Barnes and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2011-10-06 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Method and Metaphysics presents twenty-six essays in ancient philosophy by Jonathan Barnes, one of the most admired and influential scholars of his generation. The essays span four decades of his career, and are drawn from a wide variety of sources: many of them will be relatively unknown even to specialists in ancient philosophy. Several essays are now translated from the original French and made available in English for the first time; others have been substantially revised for republication here. The volume opens with eight essays about the interpretation of ancient philosophical texts, and about the relationship between philosophy and its history. The next five essays examine the methods of ancient philosophers. The third section comprises thirteen essays about metaphysical topics, from the Presocratics to the late Platonists. This collection will be a rich feast for students and scholars of ancient philosophy.

Download or read book Alternate Histories and Nineteenth Century Literature written by Ben Carver and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the first thematic survey and analysis of nineteenth-century writing that imagined outcomes that history might have produced. Narratives of possible worlds and scenarios—referred to here as “alternate histories”—proliferated during the nineteenth century and clustered around pressing themes and emergent disciplines of knowledge. This study examines accounts of undefeated Napoleons after Waterloo, alternative genealogies of western civilization from antiquity to the (nineteenth-century) present day, the imagination of variant histories on other worlds, lost-world fictions that “discovered” improved relations between men and women, and the use of alternate history in America to reconceive the relationship between the New World and the Old. The “untimely” imagination of other histories interrogated the impact of new techniques of knowledge on the nature of history itself. This book sheds light on the history of speculative thought, and the relationship between literature and the history of ideas in the nineteenth century.

This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It was the best oftimes. It was the worst oftimes. " The famous open ing sentence ofCharles Dickens' Tale oJ Two Cities can serve as a motto to characterize the mixture of optimism and pessimism with which a large number of nineteenth-century intellectuals viewed the con dition of their age. It is nowadays hardly necessary to accentuate the optimistic elements in the nineteenth-century view of history; many recent historians have sharply contrasted the complacency and the great expectations of the past century with the fears and anxieties rampant in our own age. It is often too readily assumed that a hundred years ago all leading thinkers as weil as the educated public were addicted to the cult of progress and ignored or minimized those trends of their times that paved the way for the catastrophes of the twentieth century. In the nineteenth century the intoxicating triumphs of modern science undeniably induced the general public to believe that pro gress was not an accident but a necessity and that evil and immo rality would gradually disappear. Yet fears, misgivings, and anxieties were not as exceptional in the nineteenth century as is often imagined. Such feelings were not restricted to a few dissenting philosophers and poets like Schopenhauer, Kierkegaard, 'Dostoevsky, Baudelaire, and Nietzsche.
Download or read book The Greek City written by Gustave Glotz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-19 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 2006. The Polis or City-State was the most striking feature of Ancient Greece, and its evolved form is one of the most important contributions of the Greeks to Western civilisation. In this classic study of the Greek city which combines history and sociology, Glotz traces the evolution of the Greek institutions, their essential characteristics, details of their construction and the underlying concepts that created and sustained them, mixing description and analytical insight, always remembering that human societies are not theoretical abstractions, but are comprised of living beings. Glotz's unique sensitivity to the many aspects of the Polis have made this volume required reading for all those interested in classical civilisation and ancient history and politics for over seventy years and there are many thought-provoking parallels with the politics of today.
