Book Introduction to the Study of Liturgy

Download or read book Introduction to the Study of Liturgy written by Albert Gerhards and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Worship is at the heart of the Christian faith. This applies equally to all denominations. For that reason it is all the more important that the ordering of worship and its place in the life of the church is regularly rewritten and reinterpreted. This volume--based on the third, completely revised German edition from 2013 by two of the foremost liturgical scholars in Germany--offers a contemporary, comprehensive introduction to the foundations for the study of liturgy today, one from which scholars and students in the English-speaking world can also profit. Beyond appealing to students of liturgy and theology, this book reaches out to everyone who wants to know more about the liturgical essence and dimensions of the church.

Book The Birth of the Church A Study of the Ecclesia

Download or read book The Birth of the Church A Study of the Ecclesia written by Ron McRay and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-02-08 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the "ecclesia"? It is the word often translated "church" in the Bible. This book is a study of what the ecclesia really is or isn't. Today's view and understanding of church is much different than what the Bible taught about the ecclesia. The ecclesia was more of a community of believers in Christ. It was a living organism rather than a building, rules, ordinances, mandates and hierarchy.Ron McRay has written over 40 books on different Bible subjects. He often, as he does in this book, brings a different light and way of looking at key scriptures on subjects that are common to most Christians. By reading the scriptures without the pre-formed ideas taught in most churches it is obvious that the text does not necessarily say what is commonly thought.A little bit of attention to the words of Scripture is often all that is needed to see a very different picture or story than our traditions teach.Traditions, such as the teaching of church, often take on a meaning and directive contrary to the Bible. Many of the traditions observed by many today have no origin or basis in scripture. If you are even slightly curious about church history or tradition you will enjoy reading and learning from this book. Get your copy today.

Book The Study of Liturgy

Download or read book The Study of Liturgy written by Cheslyn Jones and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 601 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have limited ourselves to Initiation, Eucharist, Ordination, Office, and Calendar. Each of these subjects has been the responsibility of its own panel of authors, and they are presented historically under five main divisions: Jewish and New Testament, patristic, medieval, Reformation and counter-Reformation, and contemporary (i.e., the reforms of the last twenty years). The historical account of these rites is preceded by a general introduction, in the form of a series of notes giving background information on subjects, like Hippolytus or Cranmer, which recur in the study of all the rites. But we do not wish to present liturgy in isolation. We are anxious to make clear its theological foundations and connections; the theological introduction is an essential part of our intention. We are also anxious to show that the study of liturgy, even in its historical aspects, is not irrelevant to the present concerns of Christians, pastoral as well as liturgical; and so the concluding pastoral orientation is for us as important as the theological introduction. It was also our ambition, in each phase of historical exposition, to show the connection between liturgy and other aspects of Christian activity and interest. - Preface.

Book excerpt: What comes to mind when you think of the word church? In this volume, Gregg R. Allison helps define the church and its mission by presenting an overview of the specific doctrines and practices of different churches and denominations. He lays a basic foundation for better understanding the common practices among local church communities ("mere ecclesiology") and the ways that they diverge from one another ("more ecclesiology"). Through this systematic primer, you will come away knowing not only how various churches differ but also how they're ultimately united as the body of Christ and the temple of the Holy Spirit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bible & Treaty: Missionaries among the Māori is a complex and colourful adventure of faith, bravery, perseverance and betrayal that seeks to recover lost connections in the story of modern New Zealand. It brings a fresh perspective to the missionary story, from the lead-up to Samuel Marsden's first sermon on New Zealand soil, and the intervening struggle for survival and understanding, to the dramatic events that unfolded around the Treaty of Waitangi and the disillusionment that led to the Land Wars in the 1860s. While some missionaries clearly failed to live up to their high calling, the majority committed their lives to Māori and were instrumental in spreading Christianity, brokering peace between warring tribes, and promoting literacy – resulting in a Māori-language edition of the Bible. This highly readable account, from the author of Ratana Revisited: An Unfinished Legacy (2006) and Ratana: The Prophet (2009), shines a new light on the ever-evolving business of New Zealand's early history.
