  • Author : Björn Krondorfer

Download or read book Male Confessions written by Björn Krondorfer and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2009-12-03 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Male Confessions examines how men open their intimate lives and thoughts to the public through confessional writing. This book examines writings—by St. Augustine, a Jewish ghetto policeman, an imprisoned Nazi perpetrator, and a gay American theologian—that reflect sincere attempts at introspective and retrospective self-investigation, often triggered by some wounding or rupture and followed by a transformative experience. Krondorfer takes seriously the vulnerability exposed in male self-disclosure while offering a critique of the religious and gendered rhetoric employed in such discourse. The religious imagination, he argues, allows men to talk about their intimate, flawed, and sinful selves without having to condemn themselves or to fear self-erasure. Herein lies the greatest promise of these confessions: by baring their souls to judgment, these writers may also transcend their self-imprisonment.

Book Revelations of Divine Love Translated from British Library Additional MS 37790

Download or read book Revelations of Divine Love Translated from British Library Additional MS 37790 written by Julian (of Norwich) and published by DS Brewer. This book was released on 1998 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Revelations of Julian of Norwich (sixteen visions inspired by the crucified Christ which she received during a serious illness) are recorded in two versions: the short text, written near the time; and the better-known second version, completed some twenty years later. The short text has a personal quality which Julian chose, probably for reasons of modesty, to edit out in her later version, but it has a simplicity and natural grace which give a clear sense of Julian as a person, and has been chosen by Frances Beer as the basis of this translation. Also included is Julian's doctrine of the Motherhood of God, excerpted from the long text. The introduction covers Julian's life and places her in the larger context of the fourteenth-century English mystical tradition.

Book Revelations of Divine Love

Download or read book Revelations of Divine Love written by Julian Of Norwich and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 1998-08-27 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coming from a society where women were barred from serious writing and teaching, Julian, an anchorite of the great medieval city of Norwich, nevertheless uses her womanlines and the English vernacular of the day to describe a series of revelations which she received from God in the year 1373. She identifies the female nature of Christ's suffering and the motherhood of God, using images from domestic daily life, emphasizing the homeliness of God's love. She writes in a lively and unpretentious manner and her theology is precise without ever being pedantic.

Book excerpt: Intimate Revelations ~ Love Letters from God did not begin as such, at least not at my level of awareness at the time. They began as "Artist Pages", an exercise in flow of consciousness writing prescribed by Julia Cameron in her inspiring book The Artist's Way, a book I was working with in an effort to open myself to the full potential of that inspirational flow I knew was available to me, and desired to come forth in my painting. Early on those pages were filled with the fear, wars and rumors of war that were raging within me, which I was staging for my own perverse viewing pleasure--or so it would seem for the length of time I continued engaging them. But as I look back now, I see that these love letters were coming into being from the start. The early pages were stepping-stones to help me reach the place where I would be able to receive and accept the incredible teachings and truths that were to come.

Book Shakespeare Sex and Love

Download or read book Shakespeare Sex and Love written by Stanley Wells and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2010-04-08 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does Shakespeare's treatment of human sexuality relate to the sexual conventions and language of his times? Pre-eminent Shakespearean critic Stanley Wells draws on historical and anecdotal sources to present an illuminating account of sexual behaviour in Shakespeare's time, particularly in Stratford-upon-Avon and London. He demonstrates what we know or can deduce of the sex lives of Shakespeare and members of his family. He also provides a fascinating account of depictions of sexuality in the poetry of the period and suggests that at the time Shakespeare was writing most of his non-dramatic verse a group of poets catered especially for readers with homoerotic tastes. The second part of Shakespeare, Sex, - and Love focuses on the variety of ways in which Shakespeare treats sexuality in his plays and at how he relates sexuality to love. Wells shows that Shakespeare's attitude to sex developed over the course of his writing career, and devotes whole chapters to 'The Fun of Sex' - to how he raises laughter out of the matter of sex in both the language and the plotting of some of his comedies; portrayals of sexual desire; to Romeo and Juliet as the play in which Shakespeare focuses most centrally on issues relating to sex, love, and the relationship between them; to sexual jealousy, traced through four major plays; 'Sexual Experience'; and 'Whores and Saints'. A final chapter, 'Just Good Friends' examines Shakespeare's rendering of same-gender relationships.

Book Algorithmic Intimacy

Download or read book Algorithmic Intimacy written by Anthony Elliott and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2022-10-11 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Artificial intelligence not only powers our cars, hospitals and courtrooms: predictive algorithms are becoming deeply lodged inside us too. Machine intelligence is learning our private preferences and discreetly shaping our personal behaviour, telling us how to live, who to befriend and who to date. In Algorithmic Intimacy, Anthony Elliott examines the power of predictive algorithms in reshaping personal relationships today. From Facebook friends and therapy chatbots to dating apps and quantified sex lives, Elliott explores how machine intelligence is working within us, amplifying our desires and steering our personal preferences. He argues that intimate relationships today are threatened not by the digital revolution as such, but by the orientation of various life strategies unthinkingly aligned with automated machine intelligence. Our reliance on algorithmic recommendations, he suggests, reflects a growing emergency in personal agency and human bonds. We need alternatives, innovation and experimentation for the interpersonal, intimate effort of ongoing translation back and forth between the discourses of human and machine intelligence. Accessible and compelling, this book sheds fresh light on the impact of artificial intelligence on the most intimate aspects of our lives. It will appeal to students in the social sciences and humanities and to a wide range of general readers.

Book excerpt: Many people wonder if God still speaks today as He did during biblical times. Undeniably, individuals in the Bible had extremely unique encounters with God in which He conveyed a clear message. And, undeniably, just as He did back then God still wants to communicate with us today in a very real and intimate way. Most often, today He will not speak in burning bush type experiences, but rather very simply. Everyday Revelations is a compilation of devotional stories in which the author shares personal experiences of how God has spoken simply, but yet profoundly in her life, and encourages readers to look for God to speak in everyday occurrences.
