This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intestinal Absorption of Metal Ions, Trace Elements, and Radionuclides focuses on the transport of metal ions across biological membranes. The selection first discusses fundamental considerations of ion transport across biological membranes, including passage of ions through the pores of gels or membranes; mobilities of organic and inorganic ions in water; and complexing of alkali metal ions. The text then focuses on ion transport across membranes of high ionic selectivity and transmissivity and their uses in model studies; model systems for transcellular active transport; and detection and implications of active salt transport across biological membranes. The book takes a look at the intestinal absorption of sodium, calcium, and potassium, including sodium and potassium transport in the intestines; use of radioisotopes to assess intestinal flux of calcium in humans; and calcium and structure of cell membranes. The intestinal absorption of zinc, cobalt, and strontium and absorption of copper from the gastrointestinal tract are underscored. The selection is a recommendable source of data for readers interested in the transport of metal ions across biological membranes.

Book Physiologic and Chemical Basis for Metal Toxicity

Download or read book Physiologic and Chemical Basis for Metal Toxicity written by B. Venugopal and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our purpose is to provide understanding for appropriate use of metals in a technical society. Knowledge of metal toxicity is needed for the preven tion, prediction, diagnosis, and therapy of adverse reactions from excess metals in mammals. Metal Toxicity in Mammals is presented in two volumes. Volume 1, Physiologic and Chemical Basis for Metal Toxic ity, provides the basis for understanding the toxic actions of metals recorded in Volume 2, Chemical Toxicity of Metals and Metalloids. The details and bases for many concepts summarized in Volume I are given, with appropriate references, in Volume 2. Thus, references for specific items in Volume 2 are not generally given in Volume 1. The authors reviewed the known toxicity of several heavy metals in anticipation of their use as multinutrient markers for NASA. As more and more metals were considered, the need for a complete review became obvious. This treatise supplants onerous searches of metal-toxicity litera ture up to 1975 and reviews the toxicity of all the metals of the periodic table on the basis of available relevant data. Books on pharmacological, nutritional, medical, veterinary, or industrial toxicity contain information about selected metals. More complete data about metals of public concern, such as mercury, lead, and cadmium, may be found in numerous books and reviews. The reader should refer to general texts and basic reference works, when specific references are not given, for general information.

Book Principles of Animal Extrapolation 1991

Download or read book Principles of Animal Extrapolation 1991 written by Edward J. Calabrese and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Principles of Animal Extrapolation addresses the conceptual basis for animal extrapolation and provides an abundance of documentation that illustrates how these principles may be applied in the selection of the more appropriate models and in the interpretation of toxicological studies. The book analyzes and documents each specific biological cause of interspecies differences in susceptibility to toxic agents, including differences in absorption, gut flora, tissue distribution, metabolism, mechanisms and efficiencies of repair, and excretion. The problem of the heterogenicity of the human population is addressed through several chapters that assess the availability and prospects of developing predictive animal models for normal humans, as well as selected potential high-risk groups. Other topics presented in this book include the biological basis of regulatory actions involving attempts to extrapolate from exceptionally high exposure levels to realistic values, especially carcinogens; an assessment of genotoxicity tests, their ability to predict carcinogenicity in whole animals, and the manner in which they should be used by regulatory agencies; birth defects; and predicting the risk of human teratogenesis. Principle of Animal Extrapolation is essential for environmental toxicologists. It also provides valuable information to biomedical scientists (especially those involved in drug development and testing) and regulatory personnel in agencies such as the EPA, the OSHA, the NIOSH, and the FDA.

Download or read book Biochemistry of Copper written by Maria C. Linder and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Copper has long been known as essential to living systems, in part through its fundamental role in electron transport and respiration. Over the years into the present, its involvement in an ever increasing number of processes in all kinds of organisms has become apparent, and new and exciting vistas of its roles in such areas as the central nervous system, and in humoral functions, are appearing on the horizon. Although the biochemistry of this element has not been studied nearly as much as that of many others, a for midable amount of work has been carried out. It has thus been a challenge to produce a summary of what has been found that provides both breadth and depth. My goal has been to try to be as comprehensive as possible, within some limitations. I have tried to provide basic information and basic data that should continue to be useful for a long time. The goal has also been to interpret where we currently stand in our knowledge of the structure, function, regulation, and metabolism of Cu-dependent processes and sub stances, especially proteins. Thus, I have tried to make this a source book for historic as well as current information on all aspects of copper bio chemistry, and a summary of our current knowledge of copper-dependent proteins and processes. Most of the research on copper has been carried out on vertebrates, especially mammals. This has played a role in the organization of the book.

  • ISBN : 9780849352805
  • Pages : 448 pages

Download or read book Biominerals written by F.C.M. Driessens and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1990-09-26 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive analysis of biominerals, in particular phosphates and carbonates of calcium. The book begins with a discussion of the theories of solid state chemistry and thermodynamics of ionic solid solutions and applies these theories to show how physiological constituents like sodium, magnesium, carbonate, chloride, fluoride, lead, or strontium influence the formation, stability, and solubility of calcium phosphates. The results of this discussion are then applied to a critical evaluation of data regarding minerals in bone, dentin, and tooth enamel, their formation during growth and turn-over, their stability under physiological conditions and their breakdown under pathological conditions. These principles are also applied to pathological calcifications such as renal calculi, arterial wall calcifications, chondrocalcinosis, dental calculus and salivary stones. A similar approach is used as the authors discuss carbonations such as calcite, dolomite, and aragonite. The book also includes an extensive analysis of the advantageous effects of magnesium supplementation. The wealth of knowledge in this extensive treatise of biominerals is valuable to medical, dental and ecological biologists, as well as scientists and clinicians in the fields of osteoporosis, bone diseases, caries, renal stone disease, parodontology and nutrition.

  • ISBN : 1461330157
  • Pages : 303 pages

Download or read book Nutrition and the Adult written by Roslyn B. Alfin-Slater and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The science of nutrition has advanced beyond expectation since Antoine La voisier as early as the 18th century showed that oxygen was necessary to change nutrients in foods to compounds which would become a part of the human body. He was also the first to measure metabolism and to show that oxidation within the body produces heat and energy. In the two hundred years that have elapsed, the essentiality of nitrogen-containing nutrients and of proteins for growth and maintenance of tissue has been established; the ne cessity for carbohydrates and certain types of fat for health has been docu mented; vitamins necessary to prevent deficiency diseases have been identified and isolated; and the requirement of many mineral elements for health has been demonstrated. Further investigations have defined the role of these nutrients in metabolic processes and quantitated their requirements at various stages of development. Additional studies have involved their use in the possible prevention of, and therapy for, disease conditions.
