For several years Andreu has been increasingly active in the Far East, responsible not only for the airport of Shanghai and the Guangzhou Gymnasium, but also the Canton Sports Centre, the Osaka Maritime Museum and the Shanghai Oriental Arts Centre. In 2004 the Beijing Opera house, a futuristic dome in Tianarmen Square, will be opened, one of Andreu`s most spectacular projects and crowning achievements. Chang'an Avenue, named after China's ancient capital (whose name means "Eternal Peace"), is supremely symbolic. Running east-west through the centuries-old heart of Beijing, it intersects the powerful north-south axis that links the traditional centers of political and spiritual legitimacy (the imperial Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven). Among its best-known features are Tiananmen Square and the Great Hall of the People, as well as numerous other monuments and prominent political, cultural, financial, and travel-related institutions. Drawing on Chang'an Avenue's historic ties and modern transformations, this study explores the deep structure of the Chinese modernization project, providing both a big picture of Beijing's urban texture alteration and details in the design process of individual buildings. Political winds shift, architectural styles change, and technological innovations influence waves of demolition and reconstruction in this analysis of Chang'an Avenue's metamorphosis. During collective design processes, architects, urban planners, and politicians argue about form, function, and theory, and about Chinese vs. Western and traditional vs. modern style. Every decision is fraught with political significance, from the 1950s debate over whether Tiananmen Square should be open or partially closed; to the 1970s discussion of the proper location, scale, and design of the Mao Memorial/Mausoleum; to the more recent controversy over whether the egg-shaped National Theater, designed by the French architect Paul Andreu, is an affront to Chinese national pride. Book excerpt: Transnational cinemas are eclipsing national cinemas in the contemporary world, and Sino-French films exemplify this phenomenon through the cinematic coupling of the Sinophone and the Francophone, linking France not just with the Chinese mainland but also with the rest of the Chinese-speaking world. Sinophone directors most often reach out to French cinema by referencing and adapting it. They set their films in Paris and metropolitan France, cast French actors, and sometimes use French dialogue, even when the directors themselves don't understand it. They tend to view France as mysterious, sexy, and sophisticated, just as the French see China and Taiwan as exotic. As Michelle E. Bloom makes clear, many films move past a simplistic opposition between East and West and beyond Orientalist and Occidentalist cross-cultural interplay. Bloom focuses on films that have appeared since 2000 such as Tsai Ming-liang's What Time Is It There? , Hou Hsiao-hsien's Flight of the Red Balloon, and Dai Sijie's Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress. She views the work of these well-known directors through a Sino-French optic, applying the tropes of métissage (or biraciality), intertextuality, adaptation and remake, translation, and imitation to shed new light on their work. She also calls attention to important, lesser studied films: Taiwanese director Cheng Yu-chieh's Yang Yang, which depicts the up-and-coming Taiwanese star Sandrine Pinna as a mixed race beauty; and Emily Tang Xiaobai's debut film Conjugation, which contrasts Paris and post-Tiananmen Square Beijing, the one an incarnation of liberty, the other a place of entrapment. Bloom's insightful analysis also probes what such films reveal about their Taiwanese and Chinese creators. Scholars have long studied Sino-French literature, but this inaugural full-length work on Sino-French cinema maps uncharted territory, offering a paradigm for understanding other cross-cultural interminglings and tools to study transnational cinema and world cinema. The Sino-French, rich and multifaceted, linguistically, culturally, and ethnically, constitutes an important part of film studies, Francophone studies, Sinophone studies and myriad other fields. This is a must-read for students, scholars, and lovers of film.

Book excerpt: As part of the ISOCARP 50th anniversary programme, the publication of Ten Years of UPATs: Reflections and Results is certainly one of the "flagship" activities of ISOCARP. We have to thank the editors and authors, as well as all the members of the Urban Planning Advisory Teams who contributed to the impressive quality of this publication. The initiation of the UPATs was a turning point in the activities of ISOCARP as a professional organisation. Instead of limiting its role to reflecting on activities, it turned into a pro-active organisation intervening in the real world, rather than serving only as a consultant. The UPATs try to "open eyes and doors", to think and act in other directions, and start collaborative and innovative planning processes rolling. At the same time, the UPATs created the opportunity to bring ISOCARP members together: new planners and experienced planners with widely divergent backgrounds and their own specific areas of expertise. Unexpectedly, the UPATs created a kind of "cement" among ist members and gave ISOCARP a new active face. The publication is clearly structured, complete and much more than a pure report. It contains an elaboration of the objectives of the UPAT concept, an interesting explanation and justification of the planning methodology and maxims, a brief comparative analysis of similar expert advisory platforms applying collaborative planning procedures, and a general description with the categories and characteristics of all the UPATs. The core of the book is devoted to the description of case studies, the organisation and management of the workshops, and, ultimately, to an elucidation of the lessons learned. When we think about the role of ISOCARP in the future, we should take the UPATs as an example for the way a modern professional organisation can act, not only through knowledge sharing, but also by developing visions, concepts and concrete solutions for complex urban problems within a collaborative setting.

The three case studies he presents each demonstrate a different type of reconstruction and model of development: urban-rural integration, tourism, and ecological civilization. To dismiss China’s official discourse as "empty propaganda," Sorace argues, makes China and Chinese realities harder to understand, not easier.
