Book Interval Mathematics 1980

Download or read book Interval Mathematics 1980 written by Karl L. E. Nickel and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 571 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interval Mathematics 1980 contains the proceedings of an International Symposium on Interval Mathematics held in Germany on May 27-31, 1980. The book introduces the reader to some of the most important work done in the field of interval mathematics and its application to computing. Topics covered range from purely theoretical to computational methods and computer architecture. Comprised of 41 chapters, this book begins with an overview of set functions and their applications, followed by a discussion on global constrained optimization using interval analysis. A model for the propagation of rounding error in floating arithmetic is then presented, and the importance of 3-valued notions for interval mathematics is highlighted. Subsequent chapters focus on the transformation of interval programs into convergent interval programs; specifications for interval programming languages; interval contractions for the solution of integral equations; and mean convergence enclosing of solutions of operator equations with convex and inverse monotonic operators. This monograph will be of value to both students and specialists in the fields of mathematics and computer science.

Download or read book Applied Interval Analysis written by Luc Jaulin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the core of many engineering problems is the solution of sets of equa tions and inequalities, and the optimization of cost functions. Unfortunately, except in special cases, such as when a set of equations is linear in its un knowns or when a convex cost function has to be minimized under convex constraints, the results obtained by conventional numerical methods are only local and cannot be guaranteed. This means, for example, that the actual global minimum of a cost function may not be reached, or that some global minimizers of this cost function may escape detection. By contrast, interval analysis makes it possible to obtain guaranteed approximations of the set of all the actual solutions of the problem being considered. This, together with the lack of books presenting interval techniques in such a way that they could become part of any engineering numerical tool kit, motivated the writing of this book. The adventure started in 1991 with the preparation by Luc Jaulin of his PhD thesis, under Eric Walter's supervision. It continued with their joint supervision of Olivier Didrit's and Michel Kieffer's PhD theses. More than two years ago, when we presented our book project to Springer, we naively thought that redaction would be a simple matter, given what had already been achieved . . .

Book Global Optimization Using Interval Analysis

Download or read book Global Optimization Using Interval Analysis written by Eldon Hansen and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2003-12-19 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Employing a closed set-theoretic foundation for interval computations, Global Optimization Using Interval Analysis simplifies algorithm construction and increases generality of interval arithmetic. This Second Edition contains an up-to-date discussion of interval methods for solving systems of nonlinear equations and global optimization problems. It expands and improves various aspects of its forerunner and features significant new discussions, such as those on the use of consistency methods to enhance algorithm performance. Provided algorithms are guaranteed to find and bound all solutions to these problems despite bounded errors in data, in approximations, and from use of rounded arithmetic.

Book Interval Methods for Circuit Analysis

Download or read book Interval Methods for Circuit Analysis written by L. V. Kolev and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1993 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by an electrical engineer this book presents a novel approach in electric circuit theory which is based on interval analysis ? an intensively developing branch or applied mathematics. Covering major topics in both circuit and system theory and their applications, it suggests a variety of methods that are suited for handling linear and nonlinear analysis problems in which some or all of the relevant data are given as intervals. Detailed algorithms of the interval methods presented are developed, enabling their easy implementation on computers. For the convenience of the reader a comprehensive survey of all the necessary interval analysis notions and techniques is provided in the introductory text. Most of the theoretical developments considered in the book are also clearly illustrated through numerical examples.

Book Iterated Maps on the Interval as Dynamical Systems

Download or read book Iterated Maps on the Interval as Dynamical Systems written by Pierre Collet and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-08-25 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Iterations of continuous maps of an interval to itself serve as the simplest examples of models for dynamical systems. These models present an interesting mathematical structure going far beyond the simple equilibrium solutions one might expect. If, in addition, the dynamical system depends on an experimentally controllable parameter, there is a corresponding mathematical structure revealing a great deal about interrelations between the behavior for different parameter values. This work explains some of the early results of this theory to mathematicians and theoretical physicists, with the additional hope of stimulating experimentalists to look for more of these general phenomena of beautiful regularity, which oftentimes seem to appear near the much less understood chaotic systems. Although continuous maps of an interval to itself seem to have been first introduced to model biological systems, they can be found as models in most natural sciences as well as economics. Iterated Maps on the Interval as Dynamical Systems is a classic reference used widely by researchers and graduate students in mathematics and physics, opening up some new perspectives on the study of dynamical systems .

Book Fast Algorithms for Structured Matrices

Download or read book Fast Algorithms for Structured Matrices written by Vadim Olshevsky and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2003 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the best known fast computational algorithms is the fast Fourier transform method. Its efficiency is based mainly on the special structure of the discrete Fourier transform matrix. Recently, many other algorithms of this type were discovered, and the theory of structured matrices emerged. This volume contains 22 survey and research papers devoted to a variety of theoretical and practical aspects of the design of fast algorithms for structured matrices and related issues. Included are several papers containing various affirmative and negative results in this direction. The theory of rational interpolation is one of the excellent sources providing intuition and methods to design fast algorithms. The volume contains several computational and theoretical papers on the topic. There are several papers on new applications of structured matrices, e.g., to the design of fast decoding algorithms, computing state-space realizations, relations to Lie algebras, unconstrained optimization, solving matrix equations, etc. The book is suitable for mathematicians, engineers, and numerical analysts who design, study, and use fast computational algorithms based on the theory of structured matrices.
