Download or read book The Arkansas Regulators written by Charles Adams and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2019-01-02 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Arkansas Regulators is a rousing tale of frontier adventure, first published in German in 1846, but virtually lost to English readers for well over a century. Written in the tradition of James Fenimore Cooper, but offering a much darker and more violent image of the American frontier, this was the first novel produced by Friedrich Gerstäcker, who would go on to become one of Germany’s most famous and prolific authors. A crucial piece of a nineteenth-century transatlantic literary tradition, this long-awaited translation and scholarly edition of the novel offers a startling revision of the frontier myth from a European perspective.
Download or read book Carry the Rock written by Jay Jennings and published by University of Arkansas Press. This book was released on 2023-03-20 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2007, as the fiftieth anniversary of the fight to integrate Little Rock Central High School approached, veteran sportswriter and native son of Little Rock Jay Jennings returned to his hometown to take the pulse of the city and the school. He found a compelling story in Central High's football team, where Black and white students toiled under longtime coach Bernie Cox, whose philosophy of discipline and responsibility and punishing brand of physical football had led the team to win seven state championships. Carry the Rock tells the story of the dramatic ups and downs of a high school football season and reveals a city struggling with its legacy of racial discrimination and the complex issues of contemporary segregation. In the season Jennings masterfully chronicles, Cox finds his ideas sorely tested in his attempts to unify the team, and the result is an account brimming with humor, compassion, frustration, and honesty. What Friday Night Lights did for small-town Texas, Carry the Rock does for the urban South and for any place like Little Rock where sports, race, and community intersect.

Download or read book Rock Island Railroad in Arkansas written by Michael E. Hibblen and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2017 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For nearly 80 years, the Rock Island was a major railroad in Arkansas providing passenger and freight services. A decline in rail travel after World War II and an increase in trucks hauling freight over government-subsidized interstates were among factors that left the railroad struggling. Efforts to merge with other railroads were stalled for years by federal regulators. The Rock Island filed for bankruptcy in 1975 and attempted a reorganization, but creditors wanted the assets liquidated, with a judge shutting it down in 1980. Most of the tracks that traversed the state were taken up, but a few relics, like the Little Rock passenger station and the Arkansas River bridge, remain as monuments to this once great railroad.
Download or read book United States Interstate Mapping System written by Ferriter's and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009-06 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Virtually everyone has been plagued at times with honest doubts about particular religious doctrines or dogmas. Conversely, most of us have been reluctant at times to accept scientific discoveries that are apparently irrefutable; yet seem to undermine beliefs we have held sacred for years. WHOSE GOD? and Three Related Works deals directly with the relationships between Nature, Science, and Beliefs. The book is a relevant and rational approach to such dilemmas. Writing in a helpful, non-offensive style, the Author has given us a common sense view of beliefs in the context of the natural universe. The first section, Whose God?, consists of twenty-one dialogues between a maturing son and his wise father about the major issues in society. The essay, What God is in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America?, includes a refreshing, insightful approach to the current quagmire surrounding the language under God. Child of Nature: the Natural Human Mind articulates the commonality of humankind, underlying all religions and philosophies; and is a proclamation of the necessity of universal humility and appreciation among all cultures. The book concludes with an original Universal Expression of Thanksgiving that is written in language that can be offered by a person of any religious, scientific, or natural view of the universe; and is suitable for any public or private Thanksgiving event.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bisecting the entire state from northeast to southwest, U.S. Highway 67 has been and continues to be a major route for traffic through Arkansas. Spanning the time period from 1900 to 1960, this book traces the development of the many interesting river and railroad towns that grew up along the highway. U.S. Highway 67 enters from Missouri and exits at Texarkana, crossing such towns as Corning, Walnut Ridge, Newport, Searcy, Beebe, Jacksonville, Little Rock, Malvern, Arkadelphia, Gurdon, Prescott, Emmet, and Hope. Through rare vintage postcards and photographs, this visual tour follows the route, looking at the towns and how they changed with the coming of the highway. Also featured are images of diners, rest stops, and motels along the road, some of which are still standing, while others are now long gone, as the interstate system took away the traffic.
