Book Myths of Peace and Democracy Towards Building Pillars of Hope Unity and Transformation in Africa

Download or read book Myths of Peace and Democracy Towards Building Pillars of Hope Unity and Transformation in Africa written by Mawere, Munyaradzi and published by Langaa RPCIG. This book was released on 2016-09-01 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The myths of peace and democracy in Africa are at the heart of this volume. Democracy and peace have become buzz words across postcolonial Africa. The gospel of democracy and peace is preached by national governments and by civil society and international organisations alike. But to what extent are the ongoing sideshows and charades of quasi-oligarchies in Africa really democracy? What do ordinary Africans mean when they hunger and thirst for democracy and peace? Positive and noble as the loud sounding rhetoric about democracy and peace in Africa might seem, the reality of propaganda and dissemblance and of multi-dimensional violence are simply too overwhelming not to be disillusioning. This book interrogates the rampant violence, enduring conflicts, autocratic governance, and facades of democracy amidst claims and calls for enduring peace on the continent. This is a monumental resource book for human rights activists, conflict management practitioners, civil society activists, political scientists, statesmen and development practitioners. It poses a challenge to those African governments who claim to embrace principles of democracy and respect for human rights to rethink and reconsider their role as ambassadors of peace, hope, transformation, and good governance.

Book Friend Or Foe

Download or read book Friend Or Foe written by Nicola De Jager and published by UN. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A United Nations University Press with University of Cape Town (UCT) Press publication Within southern Africa, there is an observable increase in dominant party systems, in which one political party dominates over a prolonged period of time, within a democratic system with regular elections. This party system has replaced the one-party system that dominated Africa's political landscape after the first wave of liberations in the 1950s and 1960s. This book seeks to understand this trend and its implications for southern Africa's democracies by comparing such systems in southern Africa with others in the developing world (such as India, South Korea, and Taiwan). In particular, the case of Zimbabwe stands out as a concerning example of the direction a dominant party can take: regression into authoritarianism. India, South Korea, and Taiwan present alternative routes for the dominant party system. The salient question posed by this book is: Which route are Botswana, Namibia and South Africa taking? It answers by drawing conclusions to determine whether these countries are moving toward liberal democracy, authoritarianism, or a road in between.

Book Southern Africa Post apartheid

Download or read book Southern Africa Post apartheid written by Chris Landsberg and published by Idasa. This book was released on 2004 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The publication of this timely book has been occasioned by the tenth anniversary celebrations of democracy in South Africa, the last country in southern Africa to be liberated. This book, which grew out of a November 2003 conference, goes beyond the parochial and uses the milestone of South Africa's democratic celebrations to focus on the health and quality of democracy and governance in southern Africa more broadly. In the spirit of ten years of democratisation in South Africa, the Centre for Policy Studies, the Institute for Democracy in South Africa and the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy thought it appropriate to place the focus on the broader region and consider the state of governance and democratisation in southern Africa. The book acknowledges that the apartheid years hugely destabilised South Africa's neighbours and negatively impacted on the pan-African spirit throughout the continent. It recognises that because of both their common history and geography, the states of southern Africa have, in important aspects, a shared future. Thus a ten-year review project that focuses only on assessing conditions in South Africa since 1994 would be incomplete, and it is, therefore, proper that this book focuses on the broader southern Africa region.
