Book Energy Economy and Climate Interactions Challenges and Opportunities volume II

Download or read book Energy Economy and Climate Interactions Challenges and Opportunities volume II written by Chuanbao Wu and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-09-10 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Research Topic is Volume II of a series. The previous volume can be found here: Energy, Economy, and Climate Interactions: Challenges and Opportunities Climate change is one of the biggest risks to global development, and it poses a severe threat to the economic and social development of all countries, which has originated largely from the greenhouse gas emissions related to energy use. This, coupled with the worldwide economic downturn caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and global energy supply shortage resulting from international instability, highlights the necessity and urgency of the collaborative promotion of addressing climate change, energy security, and economic growth issues. Green and low-carbon transformation of global energy is the key to mitigating climate change, guaranteeing energy security, and promoting economic recovery. This Research Topic aims to address advances in systematic studies on climate, energy, and socio-economic development issues based on theories and methods of multiple disciplines including Economics, Management Science, Natural Science, and Engineering Technology. Authors are encouraged to adopt self-developed or mature models such as integrated assessment models, energy optimization models, input-output models, air quality models, or climate models. We are particularly interested in applied studies that provide insightful information to facilitate reducing pollution and carbon emission actions related to energy utilization and other behavior changes to mitigate and adapt to climate change, preserve the ecological environment, and promote sustainable socio-economic development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Energy security has become a top priority issue for the United States and countries around the globe, but what does the term "energy security" really mean? For many it is assuring the safe supply and transport of energy as a matter of national security. For others it is developing and moving toward sustainable and low-carbon energy sources to avoid environmental catastrophe, while still others prioritize affordability and abundance of supply. The demand for energy has ramifications in every part of the globe—from growing demand in Asia, to the pursuit of reserves in Latin America and Africa, to the increased clout of energy-producing states such as Russia and Iran. Yet the fact remains that the vast majority of global energy production still comes from fossil fuels, and it will take a thorough understanding of the interrelationships of complex challenges—finite supply, environmental concerns, political and religious conflict, and economic volatility—to develop policies that will lead to true energy security. In E nergy Security, Brookings scholars present a realistic, cross-disciplinary look at the American and global quests for energy security within the context of these geopolitical, economic, and environmental challenges. For example, political analysts Pietro Nivola and Erin Carter wrap their arms around just what is means to be "energy independent" and whether that is an advisable or even feasible goal. Suzanne Maloney addresses "Energy Security in the Persian Gulf: Opportunities and Challenges," while economist Jason Bordoff and energy analyst Bryan Mignone trace the links between climate policies and energy-access policies. Carlos Pascual and his colleagues examine delicate geopolitical issues. Assuring long-term energy security remains one of the industrialized world's most pressing priorities, but steps in that direction have been controversial and often dangerous, and results thus far have been tenuous. In this insightful volume, Brookings

Book Energy Policy Planning

Download or read book Energy Policy Planning written by B. A. Bayraktar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Advanced Research Institute (ARI) on "The Application of Systems Science to Energy Policy Planning" was held under the auspices of the NATO Special Programme Panel on Systems Science in collaboration with the National Center for Analysis of Energy Sys tems, Brookhaven National Laboratory, USA, as a part of the NATO Science Committee's continuous effort to promote the advancement of science through international cooperation. Advanced Research Institutes are sponsored by the NATO Science Committee for the purposes of bringing together senior scientists to seek consensus on an assessment of the present state of knowl edge on a specific topic and to make recommendations for future research directions. Meetings are structured to encourage inten sive group discussion. Invitees are carefully selected so that the group as a whole will contain the experience and expertise neces sary to make the conclusions valid and significant. A final report is published presenting the various viewpoints and conclusions. The NATO Systems Science Panel noted that the systems approach is increasingly being applied to energy policy analysis and plan ning in both public and private sectors of national economies. Consequently, it seemed appropriate at this time to bring together experts to review and evaluate recent experience, in order to iden tify strengths and weaknesses in current prac tice, and to make recommendations for research directions.

Book Economic Growth and the Environment

Download or read book Economic Growth and the Environment written by Sander M. de Bruyn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is economic growth good for the environment? A number of economists have claimed that economic growth can benefit the environment, recruiting political support and finance for environmental policy measures. This view has received increasing support since the early 1990s from empirical evidence that has challenged the traditional environmentalist's belief that economic growth degrades the environment. This book reviews the theoretical and empirical literature on growth and the environment, giving an in-depth empirical treatment of the relationship between the two. Various hypotheses are formulated and tested for a number of indicators of environmental pressure. The test results indicate that alternative models and estimation methods should be used, altering previous conclusions about the effect of economic growth on the environment and offering an insight into the forces driving emission reduction in developed countries.
