Book Interpretation of the Field Vane Test in Terms of In Situ and Yield Stresses

Download or read book Interpretation of the Field Vane Test in Terms of In Situ and Yield Stresses written by DE. Becker and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interpretation of undrained shear strength data requires knowledge of the effective stress regime that is controlling the strength on the failure surface. Approximately 90% of the total resistance measured by the standard vane is provided by the vertical circumscribed failure surface. Consequently, vane test results are dominated by the strength mobilized on the vertical plane. Therefore, it is the horizontal in-situ effective and yield stresses that predominantly control the vane shear strength. Yet, to date, vane strength correlations have been considered in terms of vertical stresses only.

Book Embankments on Organic Soils

Download or read book Embankments on Organic Soils written by J. Hartlén and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1996-11-08 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More and more civil engineering constructions are being built on soft soils. As areas with better foundations are used up the necessity to be able to build structures on soft soils increases. The most troublesome of soft soils are organic soils due mainly to their high compressibility (much higher than in mineral soils), and also their very low shear strength. The large diversity of organic soils with respect to their origin as well as their properties make classification, testing, and engineering prediction of behaviour, very difficult. For this reason, engineers try, in general, to avoid constructing on deep layers of organic soils. If forced, by necessity, to do so, they manage with light structures e.g. embankments or low buildings. The authors of this book have been involved in a joint research project on the testing of embankments on organic soils. This was carried out in the North-Western part of Poland by the Swedish Geotechnical Institute and the Department of Geotechnics of Warsaw Agricultural University. The results of their research is presented in this new book and provides a valuable insight into this growing area in the field of engineering geology.

Book Analysis of a Vane Test Based on Effective Stress

Download or read book Analysis of a Vane Test Based on Effective Stress written by T. Baba and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A laboratory investigation has been made into rate effect on undrained strengths of a reconstituted clay. A "cylinder shear" apparatus has been developed recently to examine shear characteristics of the vane test in a simplified manner. A suite of laboratory tests has been carried out with this apparatus that included pore-pressure measurements on the shear surface. A series of laboratory vane tests has also been performed to be compared with those results. These test results allowed an interpretation to be made of the vane test rate effect in terms of effective stress and within the framework of the original Cam clay model. The undrained strength anisotropy of the clay was also examined in tests in which specimens from the same block sample, but cut out with different angles relative to the plane of sedimentation, were sheared in a direct shear device.

Book Correlations of Soil and Rock Properties in Geotechnical Engineering

Download or read book Correlations of Soil and Rock Properties in Geotechnical Engineering written by Jay Ameratunga and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-11 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a one-stop reference to the empirical correlations used extensively in geotechnical engineering. Empirical correlations play a key role in geotechnical engineering designs and analysis. Laboratory and in situ testing of soils can add significant cost to a civil engineering project. By using appropriate empirical correlations, it is possible to derive many design parameters, thus limiting our reliance on these soil tests. The authors have decades of experience in geotechnical engineering, as professional engineers or researchers. The objective of this book is to present a critical evaluation of a wide range of empirical correlations reported in the literature, along with typical values of soil parameters, in the light of their experience and knowledge. This book will be a one-stop-shop for the practising professionals, geotechnical researchers and academics looking for specific correlations for estimating certain geotechnical parameters. The empirical correlations in the forms of equations and charts and typical values are collated from extensive literature review, and from the authors' database.

Book Comparison of Field Vane Results with Other In Situ Test Results

Download or read book Comparison of Field Vane Results with Other In Situ Test Results written by RG. Campanella and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Undrained shear strength results from field vane shear tests are compared with those obtained from flat plate dilatometer, screw plate, pressuremeter, and piezocone tests at several sites in the lower mainland near Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The sites include deltaic deposits of soft organic soils, clay silts, and moderately to highly sensitive clays. The sites consist primarily of normally consolidated soils, but results in overconsolidated soils are also included. The test procedures and methods of interpretation are briefly described for each in-situ test type in addition to a discussion of the results.

Book Interpretation of In Situ Testing of Cohesive Soils Using Rational Methods

Download or read book Interpretation of In Situ Testing of Cohesive Soils Using Rational Methods written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research uses theoretical analyses to investigate the fundamentals controlling the performance of common in situ penetration tests (piezocone, pressuremeter, dilatometer, field vane etc.) which are used to estimate the engineering properties of cohesive soils such as clay. The mechanics of penetration processes are modeled using the Strain Path Method together with generalized effective stress soil models. The analytical predications provide a rational basis for establishing how soil properties are related to in situ measurements. Comparisons with field data from well documented sites are used to evaluate the analytical predictions and provide a basis for more reliable interpretation of engineering properties. Research during the second year of the project focused on the following topics: (1) the development of analytical methods to predict pore pressure around three- dimensional penetrometers; (2) fundamental analytical studies of the mechanics of flat plate penetration; (3) application of analytical predictions for interpreting the undrained shear strength and preconsolidation pressure from piezocone data; (4) evaluation of contact pressures measured by the dilatometer; and (5) prediction of the disturbance caused by field vane insertion.
