Book Academic Capitalism and the New Economy

Download or read book Academic Capitalism and the New Economy written by Sheila Slaughter and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2009-06-01 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As colleges and universities become more entrepreneurial in a post-industrial economy, they focus on knowledge less as a public good than as a commodity to be capitalized on in profit-oriented activities. In Academic Capitalism and the New Economy, higher education scholars Sheila Slaughter and Gary Rhoades detail the aggressive engagement of U.S. higher education institutions in the knowledge-based economy and analyze the efforts of colleges and universities to develop, market, and sell research products, educational services, and consumer goods in the private marketplace. Slaughter and Rhoades track changes in policy and practice, revealing new social networks and circuits of knowledge creation and dissemination, as well as new organizational structures and expanded managerial capacity to link higher education institutions and markets. They depict an ascendant academic capitalist knowledge/learning regime expressed in faculty work, departmental activity, and administrative behavior. Clarifying the regime's internal contradictions, they note the public subsidies embedded in new revenue streams and the shift in emphasis from serving student customers to leveraging resources from them. Defining the terms of academic capitalism in the new economy, this groundbreaking study offers essential insights into the trajectory of American higher education.

Book Managing Business and Service Networks

Download or read book Managing Business and Service Networks written by Lundy Lewis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-12-07 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most everything in our experience requires management in some form or other: our gardens, our automobiles, our minds, our bodies, our love lives, our businesses, our forests, our countries, etc. Sometimes we don’t call it “management” per se. We seldom talk about managing our minds or automobiles. But if we think of management in terms of monitoring, maintaining, and cultivating with respect to some goal, then it makes sense. We certainly monitor an automobile, albeit unconsciously, to make sure that it doesn’t exhibit signs of trouble. And we certainly try to cultivate our minds. This book is about managing networks. That itself is not a new concept. We’ve been managing the networks that support our telephones for about 100 years, and we’ve been managing the networks that support our computers for about 20 years. What is new (and what motivated me to write this book) is the following: (i) the enormous advancements in networking technology as we transition th st from the 20 century to the 21 century, (ii) the increasing dependence of human activities on networking technology, and (iii) the commercialization of services that depend on networking technology (e.g., email and electronic commerce).

Book Grid and Cloud Computing Concepts and Practical Applications

Download or read book Grid and Cloud Computing Concepts and Practical Applications written by F. Carminati and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2016-05-31 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The distributed computing infrastructure known as ‘the Grid’ has undoubtedly been one of the most successful science-oriented large- scale IT projects of the past 20 years. It is now a fully operational international entity, encompassing several hundred computing sites on all continents and giving access to hundreds of thousands of CPU (central processing unit) cores and hundreds of petabytes of storage, all connected by robust national and international scientific networks. It has evolved to become the main computational platform many scientific communities. This book presents lectures from the Enrico Fermi International School of Physics summer school Grid and Cloud computing: Concepts and Practical Applications, held in Varenna, Italy, in July 2014. The school aimed to cover the conceptual and practical aspects of both the Grid and Cloud computing. The proceedings included here are divided into eight chapters, with chapters 1, 2, 3 and 8 covering general applications of Grid and Cloud computing in various scientific fields, while chapters 4, 5, 6 and 7 discuss specific technical areas of Grid and Cloud structures. The book will be of interest to all those whose work involves the use of the Grid or Cloud computing.

Book Internet Applications of Type II Uses of Technology in Education

Download or read book Internet Applications of Type II Uses of Technology in Education written by Cleborne D Maddux and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-04-03 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Give your students a powerful learning resource—the Internet! The Internet, though brimming with potential, is still vastly underused as a teaching resource. Internet Applications of Type II Uses of Technology in Education gives teachers new strategies for the Internet’s use as a dynamic educational resource. Where Type I teaching applications technologically mimic the procedures previously used by teachers, Type II teaching applications involve innovative thinking in the use of technology in learning. Using Type II applications with the Internet, students are actively empowered to look to its use as an effective partner in their learning process. This book clearly reviews several Type II teaching applications and integrative software for use in all educational levels, including Internet videoconferencing, instant messages, WebQuests, and WebCT. Though now readily available, even those schools with the capability fail to effectively integrate computer and Internet technology into meaningful classroom activities. Using the Internet as a teaching and learning tool offers a flexibility that can be extremely effective. Internet Applications of Type II Uses of Technology in Education clearly shows how some creative educators have implemented inventive Type II applications in their teaching plans to give their students a more enriching learning experience. Internet Applications of Type II Uses of Technology in Education explores: critically evaluating Web site information how perceptions and behaviors change when Internet access becomes universally available Internet2 Videoconferencing integrating online communication into courses utilizing computer-mediated communication (CMC) tools structured online class discussions using Instant Messenger (IM) increasing vocabulary through software and online texts online learning in second-language acquisition (SLA) a project in New Zealand in which teachers and students learn Web design with the help of an external expert WebQuests as a Type II application WebCT as a Type II application achievement testing through the computer the Global Forum on School Leadership (GFSL) as a Type II application Internet Applications of Type II Uses of Technology in Education is a valuable, idea-generating resource for all academics working in information technology and education, and for K-12 teachers and administrators at all levels.
