Die Gliederung des Handbuchs orientiert sich an den beiden Hauptsträngen 'Wort' und 'Wortschatz'. Als Bindeglied fungieren die Sinnrelationen, die mit ihrer paarweisen Erfassung von Wörtern gewissermaßen ein sukzessives Ausgreifen in den Wortschatz erlauben. Die Erweiterung von 'Wort' zu 'lexikalischem Element' bedingt eine eingehendere Beschäftigung mit der Phraseologie. Gemäß der Mehrdeutigkeit von ,Wortschatz' (Wortschatz im Verhältnis zu einer natürlichen Sprache vs. Wortschatz im Verhältnis zu einem Individuum [Mentales Lexikon] vs. Wortschatz im Verhältnis zur Grammatik [Lexikon]) finden die entsprechenden Sichtweisen ausführliche Behandlung. Synchrone und diachrone Gesichtspunkte werden gleichermaßen berücksichtigt, um die den Wortschätzen natürlicher Sprachen zugrunde liegende Dynamik adäquat zu erfassen. Schließlich machte es die geschilderte Situation der Lexikologie erforderlich, eingehend Fragen zur Disziplin, zu ihren Methoden und ihren Beziehungen zu Nachbardisziplinen zu behandeln. Book excerpt: Knowing that the so-called voiced and voiceless stops in languages like English and German do not always literally differ in voicing, several linguists — among them Roman Jakobson — have proposed that dichotomies such as fortis/lenis or tense/lax might be more suitable to capture the invariant phonetic core of this distinction. Later it became the dominant view that voice onset time or laryngeal features are more reasonable alternatives. However, based on a number of facts and arguments from current phonetics and phonology this book claims that the Jakobsonian feature tense was rejected prematurely. Among the theoretical aspects addressed, it is argued that an acoustic definition of distinctive features best captures the functional aspects of speech communication, while it is also discussed how the conclusions are relevant for formal accounts, such as feature geometry. The invariant of tense is proposed to be durational, and its ‘basic correlate’ is proposed to be aspiration duration. It is shown that tense and voice differ in their invariant properties and basic correlates, but that they share a number of other correlates, including F0 onset and closure duration. In their stop systems languages constitute a typology between the selection of voice and tense, but in their fricative systems languages universally tend towards a syncretism involving voicing and tenseness together. Though the proposals made here are intended to have general validity, the emphasis is on German. As part of this focus, an acoustic study and a transillumination study of the realization of /p,t,k,f,s/ vs. /b,d,g,v,z/ in German are presented.

Book excerpt: A half century after its founding in London in 1844, the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) became the first NGO to effectively push a modernization agenda around the globe. Soon followed by a sister organization, the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA), founded in 1855, the Y movement defined its global mission in 1889. Although their agendas have been characterized as predominantly religious, both the YMCA and YWCA were also known for their new vision of a global civil society and became major agents in the worldwide dissemination of modern “Western” bodies of knowledge. The YMCA’s and YWCA’s “secular” social work was partly rooted in the Anglo-American notions of the “social gospel” that became popular during the 1890s. The Christian lay organizations’ vision of a “Protestant Modernity” increasingly globalized their “secular” social work that transformed notions of science, humanitarianism, sports, urban citizenship, agriculture, and gender relations. Spreading Protestant Modernity shows how the YMCA and YWCA became crucial in circulating various forms of knowledge and practices that were related to this vision, and how their work was co-opted by governments and rival NGOs eager to achieve similar ends. The studies assembled in this collection explore the influence of the YMCA’s and YWCA’s work on highly diverse societies in South, Southeast, and East Asia; North America; Africa; and Eastern Europe. Focusing on two of the most prominent representative groups within the Protestant youth, social service, and missionary societies (the so-called “Protestant International”), the book provides new insights into the evolution of global civil society in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and its multifarious, seemingly secular, legacies for today’s world. Spreading Protestant Modernity offers a compelling read for those interested in global history, the history of colonialism and decolonization, the history of Protestant internationalism, and the trajectories of global civil society.
