Download or read book INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON THE BIOMEDICAL EFFECTS OF OZONE AND RELATED PHOTOCHEMICAL OXIDANTS Volume 5 written by LEE SD. and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THIS SYMPOSIUM FOCUSES ON THE HEALTH EFFECTS OF OZONE AND RELATED PHOTOCHEMICAL OXIDANTS. ITS OBJECTIVES WERE TO UPDATE THE DATABASE IN THE FIELD, INCLUDING NEW FINDINGS AND ONGOING RESEARCH. OTHER TOPICS SUCH AS ATMOSPHERIC CHEMISTRY AND MONITORING, MEASUREMENT PROCEDURES, AND EXPOSURE PATTERNS AND PULMONARY REGIONAL DOSIMETRY HAVE BEEN DISCUSSED AS A BACKGROUND FOR HEALTH EFFECTS COVERING BIOCHEMICAL, MORPHOLOGICAL AND PHYSIOLOGICAL ALTERATIONS IN THE LUNG AND IN EXTRAPULMONARY SITES. IN GENERAL, THE HEALTH EFFECTS AND/OR RISKS HAVE BEEN ASSESSED USING MULTIDISCIPLINARY STUDIES OF ANIMAL MODELS, CONTROLLED HUMAN SUBJECTS AND COMMUNITY POPULATIONS. VARIOUS SHORT-TERM EFFECTS HAVE BEEN DELINEATED, AND ATTEMPTS HAVE BEEN MADE TO DESCRIBE AND/OR PREDICT CHRONIC EFFECTS BASED ON SHORT-TERM AND LONG-TERM EXPOSURE STUDIES. THE INTEGRATED INFORMATION PRESENTED IN THIS VOLUME IS INTENDED TO UPDATE THE LAST CRITERIA DOCUMENT ISSUED BY THE EPA (1978) AND CONTRIBUTE TO A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF ADVERSE HEALTH EFFECTS OF PHOTOCHEMICAL SMOG. AUTHORS ABSTRACT EDITED.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chemical enigma that is both a pollutant and anantipollutant--and environmental science's newest causecelebre.oxidants Responsible for chemical reactions both harmfuland benign, oxidants represent the sort of chemical puzzle thathave scientists both concerned and fascinated. Implicated in deadlysmog episodes and arteriosclerosis, oxidants have also played amajor role in treating polluted waters and in certain anticancerdrugs. A broad-based, up-to-date examination of the environmentalchemistry and toxicology of oxidants, Environmental Oxidants is acompendium of the latest research being done in the field. Bringingtogether the work of noted researches, the book contains a detailedlook at: * Evolution, production, distribution, and fate of oxidants in theatmosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere * Influence of human activities on oxidative processes in theatmosphere * Oxidative stress at the cellular, systemic, and ecosystemlevels * Use of oxidants in wastewater treatment processes A selective and incisive look at the current state of research onoxidants, Environmental Oxidants provides environmental scientistsand engineers with an informative, detailed discussion of just howand why oxidants have emerged as a key issue in human health andenvironmental integrity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These proceedings describe the current state-of-the-art of ozone research. A wide range of topics is discussed including: emissions, transport and transformation of precursors of ozone and of ozone itself, the distribution of ozone, the deposition of ozone at the earth's surface, and its effects on man and the environment. Attention is also given to the role of stratospheric ozone and the role of the ultraviolet radiation which is transmitted through the ozone layer. Finally it describes in detail present and future policy measures to reduce the ozone in the lower atmosphere and to protect the ozone layer in the stratosphere. Many of the papers describe recent developments and new research results. Research carried out in both in Europe and in the United States is described, as are the policy measures which are being taken by both European and U.S. governments.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IX The International Seminar on the Immunological System as a Target for Toxic Damage was held at The Commission of the European Communities (CEC) in Luxembourg on 6-9 November 1984. It was organized by the CEC and the International Programme on Chemical Safety of UNEP/ILO/WHO with the support of the u. S. Environmental Protection Agency and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences - USA and with the participation of the International Society of Immunophar macology. These bodies are actively concerned with the scientific and applied aspects of immunotoxicology. The Seminar consisted of thirty-four invited papers and three major panel discussions covering current and future test strategies for the screening of immunotoxic substances, hypersensitivity and the health implications of immunotoxico logical problems. It was attended by more than 200 scien tists from 27 countries representing all the Member states of the European Economic Community and the six Regions of the World Health Organization. These scientists represented many different disciplines and interests. The Seminar's principal objectives were: a review of recent advances in knowledge concerning the structure, function and dysfunction of the immunological system; - a review of the effects of xenobiotics on the immune system in animals and humans; an examination of the human health implications of immunotoxicity; discussion and critical analysis of the procedures for the assessment of immunological damage, a discussion of needs for the further development of laboratory and epidemiological methods and their validation, and a consideration of current test strategies.
