Book excerpt: The report looks at which faculty use 3D printing, how much they use it, and where they use it; in the library or in other university locations, for example. It also probes the question of how much faculty value this capability and how they have used it. Data in the 50-page report is broken out by more than 10 criteria including but not limited to: country of origin of faculty member (with separate data for the USA, Canada, UK/Ireland and Australia), age and gender of faculty member, academic field, size of university, academic title or position, world university ranking, and many other useful variables. Just a few of the report's many findings are that:*8.59% of faculty sampled have used or assigned for use a 3D printer. *Older faculty were somewhat less likely than others to have used a non-library located 3D printer; for example, only 6.34% of faculty aged 60 or over have used one.*Respondents mentioned the following institutions for their particularly creative or admirable use of 3D printing in research or instruction: the San Francisco Art Institute, the Creative Lab at the Salt Lake City Public Library, the University of Manchester Aerospace and Civil Engineering Faculties, University of California Davis, Temple University, University of California Berkeley, Technische Universität München, Bucknell University, Rochester University, Virginia Commonwealth University (Sculpture).Faculty from the following universities participated in the study: Australian National University, Brown University, Carleton University, Carnegie Mellon University, Drexel University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Griffith University, Imperial College London, McGill University, Miami University, Monash University, Penn State - University Park, Penn State College of Medicine, Pennsylvania State University, Princeton University, Rice University,Rutgers University, Saint Louis University, Staffordshire University, Swinburne University of Technology, Trinity College Dublin, University College Dublin, University Nottingham, University of Alberta, University of Birmingham, University of California Riverside, University of California Santa Barbara, University of Chicago, University of Connecticut, University of Leeds, University of Maryland, University of Michigan, University of Nebraska at Omaha, University of Nottingham, University of South Florida, University of Strathclyde, University of Technology Sydney, and more.

Book excerpt: This 83-page study looks closely at how many and which students are using 3D printers at their colleges, or other locales, and how much they are using them. The report also presents their opinions on the value to them of 3D printers and their level of awareness of their availability in their academic libraries. The report helps college and university officials to estimate the current and likely future level of demand for 3D printing, and the source of the likely demand. It is also a highly useful aid in planning marketing or information literacy aids aimed at current or prospective users of 3D printers in colleges or universities. Data in the repost is based on a representative sample of 1076 college students from 4-Year colleges in the USA.Just a few of the report's many findings are that: 46% of students majoring in engineering/mathematics/computer science had ever used a 3D printer, the highest of any major or range of academic fields in the sample.Older students aged 26 to 35 were much more likely than others to find a 3D printer valuable or very valuableStudents raised abroad used 3D printers three times as much as students raised in the United States.More than 64% of students from the lowest income strata were unaware if their academic libraries offered a 3D printer.Data in the report is broken out by more than 20 personal and institutional variables, so, for example, readers can get specific data on 3D printer use by first year students vs. juniors or seniors, or for students in level 1 research universities vs. doctoral institutions, or for male vs. female or vs. transgender students, or for business/economics majors vs fine arts majors, etc., etc. Breakouts include age, year of school standing, major or intended major, religion, gender, sexual orientation, income level, SAT/ACT scores, college grades, regional origins, race/ethnicity, level of school tuition, size of school of institution attended and many other variables. This is a critical resource for policy makers in government and in universities and colleges.

In this view, learners make sense of the world by forging connections between new ideas and those that are part of their existing knowledge base. For most students, that knowledge base is riddled with a host of naïve notions, misconceptions and alternative conceptions they have acquired throughout their lives. To a considerable extent, the job of the teacher is to coax out these ideas; to help students understand how their ideas differ from the scientifically accepted view; to assist as students restructure and reconcile their newly acquired knowledge; and to provide opportunities for students to evaluate what they have learned and apply it in novel circumstances. Clearly, this prescription demands far more than most college and university scientists have been prepared for.
