Book The Politics of Language in Puerto Rico

Download or read book The Politics of Language in Puerto Rico written by Amílcar Antonio Barreto and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2018-11-05 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A [book] rich in detail and analysis, which anyone wanting to understand the language debate in Puerto Rico will find essential."--Arlene Davila, Syracuse University This is the first book in English to analyze the controversial language policies passed by the Puerto Rican government in the 1990s. It is also the first to explore the connections between language and cultural identity and politics on the Caribbean island. Shortly after the U.S. invasion of Puerto Rico in 1898, both English and Spanish became official languages of the territory. In 1991, the Puerto Rican government abolished bilingualism, claiming that "Spanish only" was necessary to protect the culture from North American influences. A few years later bilingualism was restored and English was promoted in public schools, with supporters asserting that the dual languages symbolized the island’s commitment to live in harmony with the United States. While the islanders’ sense of ethnic pride was growing, economic dependency enticed them to maintain close ties to the United States. This book shows that officials in both San Juan and Washington, along with English-first groups, used the language laws as weapons in the battle over U.S.-Puerto Rican relations and the volatile debate over statehood. It will be of interest to linguists, political scientists, students of contemporary cultural politics, and political activists in discussions of nationalism in multilingual communities.

Book From Periphery to Centre

Download or read book From Periphery to Centre written by Mei Li and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-08-01 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book studies the multi-dimensional development and landscapes of the internationalization of China’s higher education throughout the past four decades, illustrating its trajectory from the periphery to the centre of the global higher education system. Combining solid theoretical elucidation and rich empirical studies, the author systematically reviews the key relevant concepts and examines policies and practices of higher education internationalization in China based on rich data gathered from interviews and surveys on overseas Chinese scholars, academic returnees, and international students. With a focus on “internationalization at home” and “transnational academic mobility”, the book analyzes the core topics and phenomena of China’s internationalizing higher education, including Chinese students studying abroad, overseas academics returning to China, international students in China, Sino-foreign cooperative education, and internationalization of higher education in Hong Kong, Singapore, and Shanghai. Seeking to offer valuable experience, reflections, and policy reference, this book will be of great value for researchers, policymakers, and university administrators interested in the internationalization of higher education and especially China’s successful cases.

Book Heroes Martyrs and Political Messiahs in Revolutionary Cuba 1946 1958

Download or read book Heroes Martyrs and Political Messiahs in Revolutionary Cuba 1946 1958 written by Lillian Guerra and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2018-04-24 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A leading scholar sheds light on the experiences of ordinary Cubans in the unseating of the dictator Fulgencio Batista In this important and timely volume, one of today’s foremost experts on Cuban history and politics fills a significant gap in the literature, illuminating how Cuba’s electoral democracy underwent a tumultuous transformation into a military dictatorship. Lillian Guerra draws on her years of research in newly opened archives and on personal interviews to shed light on the men and women of Cuba who participated in mass mobilization and civic activism to establish social movements in their quest for social and racial justice and for more accountable leadership. Driven by a sense of duty toward la patria (the fatherland) and their dedication to heroism and martyrdom, these citizens built a powerful underground revolutionary culture that shaped and witnessed the overthrow of Batista in the late 1950s. Beautifully illustrated with archival photographs, this volume is a stunning addition to Latin American history and politics.

Book From Main Street to the Left Bank

Download or read book From Main Street to the Left Bank written by John Arthur Garraty and published by East Lansing : Michigan State University Press. This book was released on 1959 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second of a series which the Institute of Research Overseas at Michigan State University is producing on the international programs of American universities. The authors highlight many insights that those involved in planning and evaluating current educational exchange programs should be kept in mind: programs should require significant intellectual effort; the impact of educational exchange is upon visiting scholars, not the host culture; Americans need to know a great deal more about other peoples and their cultures; benefits of educational exchanges increase as the student gains intellectual maturity and the ability to work independently; and at the professor level it would be better to cultivate and promote exchanges developing naturally among scholars. Attention to these points would greatly benefit designers of educational exchange recruitment campaigns.

Book The Lived Experience of Chinese International Students in the U S

Download or read book The Lived Experience of Chinese International Students in the U S written by Yalun Zhou and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-12-21 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book marks a departure from traditional assumptions concerning the deficiencies of Chinese international students in terms of learning and adapting. It employs phenomenological narrative inquiry and a small culture approach to investigate the evolved, fluid experience of pursuing a graduate degree in the U.S. at Blue Fountain University (a pseudonym for a mid-western university). Adopting an interdisciplinary perspective, this book addresses two fundamental questions: What study abroad is and what study abroad counts? The sociocultural dimensions that shape the cross-border degree seeking endeavors inform stakeholders what works for Chinese international students’ successful pursuits as EFL learners and ESL users and what could be improved. This book shares thoughts on the implications and impact of educational contexts to stakeholders at normal and dynamic contexts interrupted by global pandemic outbreak. It contributes to the understanding of the internationalization of the host institute and the EFL education reform efforts (policy making, teacher education, and classroom practice) in China (and in Asia at large).

Book Chinese International Students Stressors and Coping Strategies in the United States

Download or read book Chinese International Students Stressors and Coping Strategies in the United States written by Kun Yan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-01-11 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how Chinese students abroad may suffer stress, and how they conceptualize and adapt to stress in the American higher education environment. To do so, it adopts a mixed methods design: the sequential explanatory design, which is characterized by the collection and analysis of quantitative data followed by the collection and analysis of qualitative data. To date, no empirical research has focused solely upon understanding the stress and coping processes of Chinese students in the United States. This book addresses that gap, enriching the body of literature on international students’ adaptation process in foreign countries.
