Changes in international operations also are found to enhance firm market performance when accompanied by changes in firm structure and control systems. However, managers must be patient because market performance only improves significantly two years after these organizational changes have taken place.

Book excerpt: In contrast to other R&D intensive industries, biotechnology firms invest a significantly higher portion of revenues in R&D, and as a result, they tend to place extensive importance on the use of patents to protect core IP (Burrone, 2006). A typical IP strategy primarily involves patent procurement and little effort is executed in ensuring the patent is of commercial significance. In the knowledge-based economy, IP is more a strategic issue, than a legal one and this typical IP strategy is limited in helping firms achieve competitive advantage (Smith & Hansen, 2002). Strategic management of IP literature places importance on having an integrated approach to IP management where the IP strategy is managed according to business strategy and objectives, i.e. an integrated IP strategy and business strategy (Al-Aali & Teece, 2013; Bader et al., 2012; Lang, 2001; Ikujiro Nonaka & Teece, 2001a; Pike et al., 2005; Smith & Hansen, 2002). Some established firms have recognised that the absence of integration practices can lead to poor short-term and long-term firm outcomes and impair firm performance. This thesis hopes to contribute to a potentially new dimension of IP strategy and business strategy integration literature, with a focus on new venture biotechnology firms. The study seeks to answer the question 'how (and if) are new venture biotechnology firms integrating their IP strategy and business strategy?'. A qualitative, exploratory, multiple case study research design was adopted. Six new venture biotechnology firms were recruited using convenience sampling. The use of semi-structured interviews facilitated data collection from participants who were all in executive positions in their respective firms. Protocols to ensure reliability, validity and accuracy of the data collected were incorporated as part of the research design. The primary data analysis was done inductively through steps guided by (Gioia et al., 2013) where codes were categorised into 1st order concepts, 2nd order themes and broad and aggregate dimensions. The results of the data analysis were presented through three main models: The summary model, the case-by-case comparison and the integration spectrum model. These models led to the emergence of three major findings and two minor findings of this study. All these findings revolved around the innovation paradigms and innovation orientations of firms. A consistent relationship emerged between the overarching innovation paradigm governing firm activities to the degree of integration activities taking place within firms.

This research adopts the hybrid approach of combining qualitative and quantitative methods in a two stages research design. Quantitative method is applied first to deal with the comparative figures, and then qualitative method is used to find out the problem. The design of this multiple research includes three phases: data collection, analysis, and reporting. The findings of this research can be divided into 4 parts: R&D/marketing, technology alliances, strategic acquisitions and merger, and manufacturing. The drug innovative projects are recommended being developed within the company's familiar therapeutic areas in order to take its marketing advantage. Through this comparative analysis, some of this type of problems of these international pharmaceutical companies is identified. A big pharmaceutical company forming alliances with some small biotechnology companies has become a trend within pharmaceutical industry since 1980s. For pharmaceutical companies, to take advantage of R&D through biotechnology is the main purpose of alliances with small biotechnology companies. It is important to note that most pharmaceutical acquisitions belong to the type of absorption with high resource transferring and low autonomy. Due to the high profit margin and the essential importance of R&D and marketing, the operation management of manufacturing of pharmaceutical industry is relatively poor. The low asset utilisation rate pointed out this problem. Academic researches have revealed that existing theories of operation management of manufacturing, such as action research, set-up reduction, teamwork, continuous improvement, collaboration, and involvement, are applicable and beneficial to pharmaceutical industry rather than waiting for the technology breakthroughs.

Strategic alliances thus are an integral part of the business model of most biotechnology companies, but their economic re- vance is not yet fully understood, since research has thus far neglected most industry-specific drivers of alliance value. Based on an event study, Hady Farag analyzes the capital-market re- tion to alliance-related news announcements and assesses their complex - fects on company value. In this regard, the present work represents the first comprehensive study of European biotechnology alliances. In addition to this unique database, the research approach and techniques in sample - lection, econometric and cross-sectional analyses are state-of-the-art. The author develops and empirically tests an integrative dynamic model of collaborative value drivers. These reflect the specific characteristics of biotechnology firms and biotechnology alliances.
