Download or read book Nuclear Non proliferation and Arms Control Verification written by Irmgard Niemeyer and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-03-12 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book strives to take stock of current achievements and existing challenges in nuclear verification, identify the available information and gaps that can act as drivers for exploring new approaches to verification strategies and technologies. With the practical application of the systems concept to nuclear disarmament scenarios and other, non-nuclear verification fields, it investigates, where greater transparency and confidence could be achieved in pursuit of new national or international nonproliferation and arms reduction efforts. A final discussion looks at how, in the absence of formal government-to-government negotiations, experts can take practical steps to advance the technical development of these concepts.

Book International Nuclear Export Controls and Non Proliferation

Download or read book International Nuclear Export Controls and Non Proliferation written by Ian J. Stewart and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-09-27 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the evolution of international nuclear non-proliferation trade controls over time. The book argues that the international nuclear export controls have developed in a sub-optimal way as a result of a non-proliferation collective action problem. This has resulted in competition among suppliers, owing to the absence of an overarching effective system of control. While efforts have been undertaken to address this collective action problem and strengthen controls over time, these measures have been inherently limited, it is argued here, because of the same structural factors and vested interests that led to the creation of the problem in the first place. This study examines international controls from the beginning of the nuclear age and early efforts to control the atom, up to more recent times and the challenge posed by Iranian and North Korean nuclear ambitions. Drawing on a rich body of original archival research and interviews, the book demonstrates that the collective action problem has restrained cooperation in preventing nuclear proliferation and that gaps persist in the international nuclear trade control regime. This book will be of much interest to students of nuclear proliferation and arms control, security studies, and International Relations.

Book Nuclear nonproliferation and safety concerns with the International Atomic Energy Agency s technical cooperation program report to Congressional requesters

Download or read book Nuclear nonproliferation and safety concerns with the International Atomic Energy Agency s technical cooperation program report to Congressional requesters written by and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 1997 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has the dual role of promoting the peaceful uses of nuclear energy and verifying that nuclear materials under its supervision are not diverted to military purposes (safeguards). Since 1958, in promoting the peaceful uses of nuclear energy through its technical cooperation program, IAEA has provided technical assistance to its member states by supplying equipment, expert services, and training that support the upgrading or establishment of nuclear techniques and facilities. Although the United States does not receive technical assistance, it has been the leading financial donor to IAEA'5 technical cooperation program. In March 1997, we reported to you on IAEA's technical assistance for Cuba, including assistance for the partially completed Cuban nuclear power reactors whose construction is suspended. As requested, this report examines (1) the purpose and effectiveness of IAEA's technical cooperation program, (2) the cost of U.S. participation in IAEA'5 technical cooperation program, and (3) whether the United States ensures that the activities of IAEA's technical cooperation program do not conflict with U.S. nuclear nonproliferation and safety goals.

Book Regional Pathways to Nuclear Nonproliferation

Download or read book Regional Pathways to Nuclear Nonproliferation written by Wilfred Wan and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2018-06-15 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contemporary nuclear landscape is rife with challenges. Stagnated progress in disarmament, widespread modernization plans, and emergent proliferation pathways are contributing to the risk of catastrophe. Meanwhile, global nuclear order appears more precarious than ever. This book makes a case for a regional reorientation of the nuclear nonproliferation regime, arguing that a more specialized, decentralized, and localized arrangement could more effectively address post-Cold War challenges. In the process, it develops a framework to analyze the conditions that would allow for more robust regional nuclear cooperation.?? Regional Pathways to Nuclear Nonproliferation includes a series of case studies, centering on Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East. It provides a comprehensive overview of existing nuclear cooperation at the regional level, including in the context of nuclear-weapon-free zones. For each case, the book both analyzes the viability of a stronger regional nuclear order and considers the form such an order would likely take. What is the magnitude and character of the nuclear proliferation threat across different regions? What does the presence of institutions in economic, environmental, and human security domains suggest about the likelihood of addressing that threat? A better understanding of broader regional patterns may be the key to explaining the possibility of regional nuclear cooperation. It may also help identify means to effectuate the timing and scale of that cooperation, bolstering regional nuclear orders and, in turn, ensuring the viability of global nuclear order.

Book Nuclear Non Proliferation and Global Security

Download or read book Nuclear Non Proliferation and Global Security written by David B. Dewitt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-19 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nuclear non-proliferation treaty had recently undergone its third formal review by its signatories, who had assessed its effectiveness and considered how it might better be implemented. This book, originally published in 1987, written by experts many of whom were leading participants in the nuclear non-proliferation treaty regime at the time, examines the whole range of issues connected with nuclear non-proliferation and the treaty. It looks at non-proliferation from the point of view of nuclear nations, non-nuclear nations and the nuclear industry. It assesses the work of the international monitoring bodies and reconsiders the place of non-proliferation in the changing balance of global nuclear power. It concludes by discussing the way forward.

Book Non Proliferation Safety and Nuclear Security

Download or read book Non Proliferation Safety and Nuclear Security written by M. Gerlini and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2016-01-29 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the ending of the Cold War, and in the light of an increased risk of nuclear terrorism, a shift in focus has taken place from nuclear safeguards to nuclear security. This book presents 8 lectures delivered at the NATO Advanced Training Course, ‘Non-Proliferation from an International Perspective’, held in Rabat, Morocco, in December 2014. The aim of the course was to inform participants with regard to the advanced political and legal concepts related to nuclear security, as well as equipping them with the necessary tools to apply such concepts in practice. The papers collected here cover the principal political and international topics related to the evolution of the international institutions or regional agencies which manage nuclear threat, with special attention being given to the theoretical and political bases of nuclear security as an answer to that nuclear threat. The book will be of particular interest to all those whose work involves the political and legal aspects of nuclear security, particularly those who must deal with public opinion or decision makers with regard to this important area of national and international security. Please note that one of the 8 lectures presented here is written in French, the remaining 7 are in English.

This book was released on 2023-10-20 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1995 conference on the review and extension of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty may well mark an important turning point. The treaty itself, but also the wider international regime built around it are at stake. The Future of the International Nuclear Non-Proliferation Regime deals with various aspects of the problems of nuclear proliferation and the international struggle against it. Authors from Europe, the United States and Australia have contributed to this book, which was produced under the auspices of the Netherlands Institute of International Relations `Clingendael'. The reader is first offered regional case studies on North Korea, South Asia, the Middle East and the former Soviet Union, followed by chapters on nuclear safeguards and export controls systems and contributions on a Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty and security guarantees. The two concluding chapters evaluate and propose policies to strengthen the non-proliferation regime beyond 1995. It will be of interest to policy-makers, students of international relations and journalists.
