Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Catholic World, Vol. 61: A Monthly Magazine of General Literature and Science; April, 1895 to September, 1895 II. Inspiration extended to every sentence and statement in the primitive text. Are we, then, to conclude that inspiration begins and ends with the matter of the sacred volume? Is it concerned only with the thoughts, the ideas, the statements, and with nothing be yond? No, we are not to lay down a hard-and-fast rule, which admits of no exception. It seems to belong to the principal author to determine, in a general way, the specific form of the inspired message, whether it shall be in prose or in verse, in the shape of an epistle or a psalm or a dialogue or a narrative. Although inspiration per se does not require a set form of words, per accidens it may, when there is question of a mystery, such as the Blessed Trinity, which demands exact wording; or in pas sages in which the Holy Ghost intended to supply in after ages the precise words of dogmatic formulas; or again, where a mys tical meaning is superadded, or the form of a sacrament exactly prescribed. Of course, it is not always easy to determine, in particular, when the style was dictated word for word, and when it was not. In certain cases the connection between the thought and a set form of words may 'be necessary, in others it maybe only convenient, and in others still it may be altogether indifferent. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Catholic World, Vol. 57: A Monthly Magazine of General Literature and Science; April to September, 1893 The efficiency of motors has increased most wonderfully. In the first rude essays at human flight the only available source of power was that of the human muscle, which meant at least a thousand pounds per horse-power, if continued for any consider able time. Giffard's steam-engine and boiler taken together weighed, according to his own report of September, 1852, one hundred and ten pounds per horse-power. Some years later Mr. Stringfellow constructed a small model which is said to have weighed only thirteen pounds per horse-power. This, though never thoroughly tested, was for a long time referred to as a triumph of mechanical Skill. While both scientific and um scientific writers were debating the possibility of ever construct ing a large motor of like efl'iciency, Mr. Maxim went resolutely to work and, at one step, reduced the weight to less than ten pounds per horse-power. This achievement certainly astonished the scientific and engineering world. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Catholic World Vol 85 written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-13 with total page 872 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Catholic World, Vol. 85: A Monthly Magazine of General Literature and Science; April, 1907, to September, 1907 Let us pass now to the special subject of this article, that of phantasms of the dying, or wraiths. The word wraith is defined by Webster as an apparition of a person in his ex act likeness, seen before death, or a little after. In popular use, as he notes, it has come to have a wider and less exact meaning, and' to signify any kind of apparition; just as the word cyclone is used by people generally to mean a vio lent storm, the same as hurricane or tornado; whereas, properly speaking, a cyclone may be accompanied by very little rain or wind. Webster gives its correct definition. It is a pity that words get their corners rubbed off in this way, but it seems unavoidable. The definition of wraith given above, however, is not quite as exact as it should be. As it stands, it would cover the phantasms of the living, already discussed. Instead of say ing before death, or a little after, it would seem better to say, a little before or after death, or at the very moment of death. Furthermore, there seems to be no need of restricting the term to visible apparitions, as seems tique intended. There may be auditory phantasms of those near death, as well as visual ones, and they may as well be called by the same gen eral name. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Catholic World, Vol. 45: A Monthly Magazine of General Literature and Science; April, 1887, to September, 1887 Bishop Fitzpatrick's strong sense of humor and keen wit had much to do With his influence, for by mingling good-natured sarcasm and irony With the most serious discussions it made him a doubly formidable antagonist. It was always diflicult to de tect how much of conviction and how much of banter there was in his treatment of men engaged in the actual intellectual move ments of our times. I found such to be the case in my own ln tercourse with him. He always attacked me in a bantering way, but, I thought, half in earnest too. Hence I never found it ad visable to enter into argument with him. How can you argue th a man, a brilliant Wit and an accomplished theologian, who continually flashes back and forth between first principles and Witlicisms? When Iwould undertake to grapple With him On first principles he would throw me Off With a joke, and while I was parrying the joke he was back again upon first principles. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Catholic World, Vol. 80: A Monthly Magazine of General Literature and Science; October, 1904, to March, 1905 In form T/ze Veil of t/ze Temple is a novel of romance. In fact, it is an account of discussions concerning religion, philoso phy, and science carried on by a selectparty of visitors at the summer retreat of Mr. Glanville, the principal character of the book, on the west coast of Ireland. The different person ages, 'the introduction of the conversational dialogue, with fre quent interruptions for dinner and tea, give a variety and a sustained interest to the story. For many reasons the volume can with justice be considered an improvement on the previous work, Religion as a Credible Doctrine; nevertheless, 'apart from the author's express declaration, the form of the work restrains the critic' from viewing the difierent characters as counterparts of persons in real. Life. The purpose of the present' article, therefore, is not to take issue with the opinions expressed by any individual speaker, but to view the work on the whole as an object-lesson in which.certain phases of current thought are presented to the reader in a concrete and tangible form.
