Book Migrant Workers in the Gulf

Download or read book Migrant Workers in the Gulf written by Roger Owen and published by Minority Rights Group. This book was released on 1992-04-01 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The oil price explosion of the early 1970s triggered off a massive wave of labour migration into the oil-rich states of the Gulf. The migrants came from the poorer Arab countries, from Asia and Africa, attracted by wage levels considerably higher than they could earn in their homelands-. Some came on short-term contracts, others stayed many years. By the end of the 1980s, there were thought to be over six million migrant workers in the region. Migrant Workers in the Gulf for the first time provides a concise overview of the situation of these new migrant workers. Written by Dr. Roger Owen, it gives a valuable insight into the problems and the pressures they face. The report also contains an MRG Update by Dr. Nicholas Van Hear, outlining the mass population movements in the early 1990s. About two million foreign residents left Iraq and Kuwait in the aftermath of the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait, 800,000 Yemenis were pressured to leave Saudi Arabia, while in 1991 persecution of Kuwait's longestablished Palestinian community by the newly restored rulers led to their mass exodus. The report poses vital questions. Can the rights of migrant workers be protected? Can mass population movements be prevented in the future? What should be the role of the UN and the international community? This unique report should be of immense value to all those interested in the social and economic history of the Middle East and Asia and to policymakers concerned with migration, labour and mass movements of people worldwide. Please note that the terminology in the fields of minority rights and indigenous peoples’ rights has changed over time. MRG strives to reflect these changes as well as respect the right to self-identification on the part of minorities and indigenous peoples. At the same time, after over 50 years’ work, we know that our archive is of considerable interest to activists and researchers. Therefore, we make available as much of our back catalogue as possible, while being aware that the language used may not reflect current thinking on these issues.

Book The Middle Eastern Village

Download or read book The Middle Eastern Village written by Richard Lawless and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-31 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapid and uneven change to the fabric of rural life is widespread in modern Middle Eastern countries. Modernisation, usually in the Western model, has often brought major improvements in agricultural technology, education and public health but has also had the effect of weakening the traditional rural economy of many villages and encouraging their growing dependence on external sources of income, most notably oil remittances. This collection of research on the Middle Eastern village looks at the impact on rural life and environment of such factors as the mass exodus of labour to urban centres, emigration, immigration, environmental change and the changing role of women in rural communities – particularly the wives of migrant workers who have to fill a new role in the family structure. State-sponsored agrarian policies have weakened the power of traditional landed interests and together with labour migration have provoked new tension and inequalities in rural society. The book makes clear that the pattern of change has been highly uneven and has served to heterogenise the countryside. As the oil states enter a period of recession and the likelihood of substantial return migration increases, rural communities will need to make further major adjustments and the book examines the tensions this new development is likely to produce. First published in 1987.

Book The Jordanian Labor Market

Download or read book The Jordanian Labor Market written by Caroline Krafft and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-09-19 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jordan stands in the middle of a turbulent region, experiencing substantial refugee flows and economic challenges due to the conflict and insecurity of its neighbors. The Jordanian Labor Market: Between Fragility and Resilience fills an enormous gap in our knowledge regarding the region's labor market during a period of substantial instability and new challenges for Jordan. Prior to the refugee crisis the Jordanian economy and labor market had been shifting in a positive direction. An enormous influx of Syrian refugees, however, created unanswered questions of how the region's labor market would fare. The Jordanian Labor Market leverages the 2016 Jordan Labor Market Panel Survey to provide answers to some of these questions. It offers an unprecedented opportunity to assess the challenges that Jordan faces. It addresses key economic and policy questions through unparalleled nationally representative date. The Jordanian Labor Market presents critical new insights into the status of migrants and refugees in Jordan. It examines key indicators of the labor market including labor supply, job creation, wages and inequality, and self-employment. It also looks at transitions across the life course in Jordan such as education, school-to-work transition, marriage and fertility, housing and new households, and social insurance and retirement. These factors provide important insight into important challenges Jordan's economy and society faces.
