Book Diversity and Diversification

Download or read book Diversity and Diversification written by John Dimmick and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-04-14 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This special issue of the Journal of Media Economics deals with diversity and diversification. Diversity, especially in broadcast programming, has played a major role in policy discussions on both sides of the Atlantic. The reason for the importance of the construct, however, is not often made explicit. Diversity in media content is important because the greater the variety or breadth of media content the greater the probability that media consumers can obtain utility or gratification from that content. Conversely, low diversity in media content means that consumers encounter fewer opportunities to obtain utility or gratification. Hence, consumer welfare is served by greater rather than lesser diversity. The articles in this issue are suitably diverse in the media industries on which they focus and in the countries represented by their authors. Van Kranenburg, Hagedoorn and Pennings take the publishing industry as their subject while Moreau and Peltier have researched the film industry. Einstein and McDonald and Lin report findings on diversity in the US television industry, albeit in different time periods.

Book Is the International Diversification Potential Diminishing Foreign Equity Inside and Outside the Us

Download or read book Is the International Diversification Potential Diminishing Foreign Equity Inside and Outside the Us written by Karen K. Lewis and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past two decades international markets have become more open, leading to a common perception that global capital markets have become more integrated. In this paper, I ask what this integration and its resulting higher correlation would imply about the diversification potential across countries. For this purpose, I examine two basic groups of international returns: (1) foreign market indices and (2) foreign stocks that are listed and traded in the US. I examine the first group since this is the standard approach in the international diversification literature, while I study the second group since some have argued that US-listed foreign stocks are the more natural diversification vehicle (Errunza et al (1999)). In order to consider the possibility of shifts in the covariance of returns over time, I extend the break-date estimation approach of Bai and Perron (1998) to test for and estimate possible break dates across returns along with their confidence intervals. I find that the covariances among country stock markets have indeed shifted over time for a majority of the countries. But in contrast to the common perception that markets have become significantly more integrated over time, the covariance between foreign markets and the US market have increased only slightly from the beginning to the end of the last twenty years. At the same time, the foreign stocks in the US markets have become significantly more correlated with the US market. To consider the economic significance of these parameter changes, I use the estimates to examine the implications for a simple portfolio decision model in which a US investor could choose between US and foreign portfolios. When restricted to holding foreign assets in the form of market indices, I find that the optimal allocation in foreign market indices actually increases over time. However, the optimal allocation into foreign stocks decreases when the investor is allowed to hold foreign stocks that are traded in the US. Also, the minimum variance attainable by the foreign portfolios has increased over time. These results suggest that the benefits to diversification have declined both for stocks inside and outside the US.

Book excerpt: European public discourse often frames (forced) migration solely as a security issue and ignores the implications of societal diversity for health, quality-of-life and well-being, in both Africa and Europe. The present volume offers an interdisciplinary and international look at the relationship between refugees, diversity, and health, including health care policies, socio-political framework conditions, environmental factors, the situation in refugee camps, quality-of-life approaches and economical perspectives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Large, diversified firms face unique challenges as they compete worldwide, and corporate restructuring is one way multinationals strive for competitive advantage. Weighing the pros and cons of a variety of approaches to restructuring, Downscoping offers executives a clear, strategic path through the maze. The authors show that when a multinational conglomerate fails to compete effectively, too much diversification may be the culprit. Whether the result of weak corporate governance or poor corporate strategy, over-diversification can make managers, unfamiliar with some of the markets in which they compete, opt for safety over innovation. This risk-aversion and lack of long-range commitment to innovation lead inevitably to stagnation over the longer term. The answer is not downsizing--closing offices and laying off personnel--but downscoping: a strategic approach to restructuring. The options include incentive and compensation adjustments for executives, leveraged buy-outs and capital structure changes, focusing on core skills, diversifying internationally while focusing on businesses in which a firm has strong competencies, and buying and selling mature businesses where product development is not a great concern. Regardless of the approach, executives must exercise strategic leadership during and after restructuring, including providing strategic direction, exploiting core competencies, developing human capital, and sustaining the corporate culture. Based on systematic research rather than casual observation, Downscoping provides a strong description of restructuring alternatives and their resulting tradeoffs. Its specific guidelines for maintaining competitiveness will be essential reading for managers involved in corporate restructuring.

Book New Perspectives on the International Diversification of Multinational Enterprises

Download or read book New Perspectives on the International Diversification of Multinational Enterprises written by Yi Li and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pursuit of international markets and resources from foreign sources has increased dramatically across the globe during the past three decades, and the academic study of international diversification has increased concurrently. Although scholars have studied several areas of international diversification research, there are still some unsolved problems, and new theoretical perspectives are needed to advance the field. In this thesis, I derive comprehensive models of international diversification by examining these variables through new perspectives. Based on positive organisational scholarship, configurational and institutional perspectives, I build new theoretical frameworks to fill gaps in international diversification research. This dissertation comprises three studies. Each of the studies examines different angles of international diversification, and the three individual research papers are intertwined to provide a coherent and integrated framework for this thesis. In Study 1, I elaborate a theoretical framework advancing the generalisation of international diversification research in emerging economies. Previous studies mainly focus on international diversification of multinational enterprises (MNEs) from well-developed countries, but largely ignored international diversification of emerging economy MNEs. To fill this research gap, Study 1 captures how Top Management Teams' (TMT) industrial and institutional factors influence mixed foreign direct investment (FDI), an important type of international diversification especially for emerging economy firms. Following the positive organisational scholarship perspective, I examine the positive influence of TMT functional diversity on emerging economy firms' likelihood of conducting mixed FDI. Furthermore, the effect of TMT functional diversity on mixed FDI is contingent on the social context of the TMT, competitive condition of the industry, and institutional development of firm locality. As an extension to Study 1, Study 2 evaluates the impact of various international diversification strategies on firms' internationalisation performance in the context of emerging economies. Within the configurational perspective, Study 2 investigates equifinal paths for emerging economy firms to achieve strategic fit (in the form of desired internationalisation performance) through configurations of the TMT's structure, international diversification strategy, and environmental condition. Within fuzzy-set analysis, the empirical results support my proposition about configurations of strategic fit in an emerging economy firm's international diversification, and multiple equifinal strategic-fit paths have been found. In Study 3, I extend the literature by developing arguments for performance benefits of institutional diversification strategies of MNEs. Existing studies have largely overlooked host-country institutional differences when considering the effects of different foreign countries on the MNE performance. I seek to fill this research gap by teasing out the effects of institutional diversification, and building theory on the relationship between different types of institutional diversification and MNE performance. Based on new institutional economics and comparative institutionalism, I divide institutional diversification into two main types: vertical institutional diversification and horizontal institutional diversification. I propose that the degree of vertical institutional diversification will have a negative effect on the MNE performance, while the scope of this diversification will serve to strengthen this negative effect. For horizontal institutional diversification, I propose that the MNE's degree of this diversification will have a positive effect on its performance, and its scope weakens this positive effect.
