Book Examining Core Elements of International Research Collaboration

Download or read book Examining Core Elements of International Research Collaboration written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2011-09-29 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The globalization of science, engineering, and medical research is proceeding rapidly. The globalization of research has important implications for the U.S. research enterprise, for the U.S. government agencies, academic institutions, and companies that support and perform research, and for the world at large. As science and technology capabilities grow around the world, U.S.-based organizations are finding that international collaborations and partnerships provide unique opportunities to enhance research and training. At the same time, significant obstacles exist to smooth collaboration across national borders. Enhancing international collaboration requires recognition of differences in culture, legitimate national security needs, and critical needs in education and training. In response to these trends, the Government-University-Industry Research Roundtable (GUIRR) launched a Working Group on International Research Collaborations (I-Group) in 2008, following its meeting on New Partnerships on a Global Platform that June. As part of I-Group's continuing effort, a workshop on Examining Core Elements of International Research Collaboration was held July 26-27, 2010 in Washington, DC. One primary goal of the workshop is to better understand the risks involved in international research collaboration for organizations and individual participants, and the mechanisms that can be used to manage those risks. Issues to be addressed in the workshop include the following: (1) Cultural Differences and Nuances; (2) Legal Issues and Agreements; (3) Differences in Ethical Standards; (4) Research Integrity and the Responsible Conduct of Research; (5) Intellectual Property; (6) Risk Management; (7) Export Controls; and (8) Strategies for Developing Meaningful International Collaborations. The goal for the workshop and the summary, Examining Core Elements of International Research Collaboration, is to serve as an information resource for participants and others interested in international research collaborations. It will also aid I-Group in setting its future goals and priorities.

Download or read book International Cooperation in Research and Development written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developments in science and technology are increasingly the result of international collaboration. Many indicators show increasing links among world scientists to conduct joint research, share data, conduct international meetings, develop common standards, and transfer technology. Data suggest that this activity is not just increasing but is changing the conduct, organization, and outputs of scientific research around the world. Scientific research is becoming more globalized-increasing numbers of countries are building their scientific capabilities and participating in world science; More collaborative-a growing proportion of projects and the publications they produce result from collaborations by investigators from a mix of nations; and more "distributed"--scientific teams are collaborating across greater distances and involve more widely dispersed expertise.

Book excerpt: In a globalized knowledge-economy, the European Union (EU) needs a new approach to its international science and technology (S & T) policies by focusing on improved coherence across the different tiers of government and by demonstrating leadership in tackling serious global challenges. The contributors to this book analyze European S & T policies in several areas of global concern as well as by exposing both the pitfalls of policy coordination and its potential to contribute to a more coherent international S & T policy. They highlight the interactions between national, European and international po.

Book Research Collaboration between Europe and Latin America

Download or read book Research Collaboration between Europe and Latin America written by Rigas Arvanitis and published by Archives contemporaines. This book was released on 2014-02-19 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International collaboration has become increasingly important in carrying out research activities. This book, written by a large group of scholars from Europe and Latin America, maps, analyses and discusses research collaboration between the two continents during the last twenty years. The empirical material underlines the richness and the variety of the links that bind the two continents, well beyond the simplified views of science, either as the brainchild of global networking or as a result of dependence. The book also develops an innovative methodological approach, combining bibliometric analysis, social surveying, in-depth interviews, and a careful analysis of research programmes and policies. While arguing that the asymmetry of relations that once existed in cooperation has turned into a more equal partnership between the two continents, it deciphers some of the reasons behind this more balanced cooperation. It also challenges the view of science as a global self-organising system through collective action at the level of researchers themselves. On the contrary, the importance of policy, institutions, and previously developed research is highlighted and recognised

Book Science Policy Study Hearings International Cooperation in Science Vol 7

Download or read book Science Policy Study Hearings International Cooperation in Science Vol 7 written by United States Congress and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11 with total page 1172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Science Policy Study, Hearings, International Cooperation in Science, Vol. 7: Hearings Before the Task Force on Science Policy of the Committee on Science and Technology, House of Representatives, Ninety-Ninth Congress, First Session, June 18, 19, 20, 27, 1985 Dr. Weisskopf. Thank you very much for asking me to testify before your committee. As the chairman said, I was director-general of cern in Geneva from 1961 to 1965. I am a us. Citizen. I would like to say a few words about the development Of cern, since cern is the first and probably most successful international scientific laboratory. The idea of cern actually was seeded by an American, Prof. H. Rabi, in 1950, but it was enthusiastically taken up by the Euro pean scientists, and in a very quick succession Of events, in 1952, 12 Western European countries signed a convention to build a small accelerator and a big one. The big one was a 30-gev accelerator. It was at that time, when it was finished, the biggest in the world. However, the Brookhaven Laboratory had a similar one which was finished about 1 year later. This construction lasted until 1960, and in 1960, the research started. That was the time when I became director-general. We had, of course, to face several problems. The Europeans had no experience in big science, nothing like the Brookhaven Lab or the war experience of the United States. There was a problem of international collaboration, and our relation to the universities. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2013-12-05 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International Cooperation, Convergence and Harmonization of Pharmaceutical Regulations: A Global Perspective provides the current status of the complex and broad phenomenon of cooperation, convergence and harmonization in the pharmaceutical sector (Part I), thoroughly evaluates its added value and its critical parameters and influencing factors (Part II) in order to recommend actions and measures to support the next steps for cooperation, convergence and harmonization (Part III). All of these recommendations in the book support the establishment of a better coordinated global pharmaceutical system which represents the best realistic alternative to fulfill the objective to establish a global coalition of regulators and to respond to an increased demand to further cooperation in the pharmaceutical sector. This proposed framework, which leverages all of the ongoing positive cooperation initiatives and uses as foundations all of the numerous harmonization projects developed over the years, presents advantages for all stakeholders and would definitively have significant added value to the promotion and protection of global public health. The status of all major worldwide harmonization and cooperation initiatives (at bilateral, regional, and global levels) The value of cooperation in the pharmaceutical sector and the driving factors behind harmonization The proposition of a structure for the global pharmaceutical system and timely recommendations for enhancing international cooperation, as well as further discussion and policy changes in this area

Book Global Cooperation and the Human Factor in International Relations

Download or read book Global Cooperation and the Human Factor in International Relations written by Dirk Messner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-12-14 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to pave the way for a new interdisciplinary approach to global cooperation research. It does so by bringing in disciplines whose insights about human behaviour might provide a crucial yet hitherto neglected foundation for understanding how and under which conditions global cooperation can succeed. As the first profoundly interdisciplinary book dealing with global cooperation, it provides the state of the art on human cooperation in selected disciplines (evolutionary anthropology and biology, decision-sciences, social psychology, complex system sciences), written by leading experts. The book argues that scholars in the field of global governance should know and could learn from what other disciplines tell us about the capabilities and limits of humans to cooperate. This new knowledge will generate food for thought and cause creative disturbances, allowing us a different interpretation of the obstacles to cooperation observed in world politics today. It also offers first accounts of interdisciplinary global cooperation research, for instance by exploring the possibilities and consequences of global we-identities, by describing the basic cooperation mechanism that are valid across disciplines, or by bringing an evolutionary perspective to diplomacy. This book will be of great interest to scholars and postgraduates in International Relations, Global Governance and International Development.
