The text is divided into four parts: * Part One, Magnetics, offers an introduction to magnetic actuators and sensors as well as basic electromagnetics, followed by an examination of the reluctance method, the finite element method, magnetic force, and other magnetic performance parameters * Part Two, Actuators, explores DC actuators, AC actuators, and magnetic actuator transient operation * Part Three, Sensors, details Hall effect and magnetoresistance as they apply to sensing position. Readers are introduced to many other types of magnetic sensors * Part Four, Systems, covers aspects of systems common to both magnetic actuators and sensors, including coil design and temperature calculations, electromagnetic compatibility, electromechanical finite elements, and electromechanical analysis using system models. The final chapter sets forth the advantages of electrohydraulic systems that incorporate magnetic actuators and/or sensors A major thrust of this book is teaching by example. In addition to solved examples provided by the author, problems at the end of each chapter help readers to confirm their understanding of new skills and techniques. References, provided in each chapter, help readers explore particular topics in greater depth. With its emphasis on problem solving and applications, this is an ideal textbook for electrical and mechanical engineers enrolled in upper-level undergraduate and graduate classes in electromechanical engineering.

Download or read book Supermagnets Hard Magnetic Materials written by G.J Long and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 840 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book you are now holding represents the final step in a long process for the editors and organizers of the Advanced Study Institute on hard magnetic materials. The editors interest in hard magnetic materials began in 1985 with an attempt to better understand the moments associated with the different iron sites in Nd Fe B. These 14 moments can be obtained from neutron diffraction studies, but we qUickly realized that iron-57 Mossbauer spectroscopy should lead to a better determination of these moments. However, it was also realized that the complex Mossbauer spectra obtained for these hard magnetic materials could not be easily understood without a broad knowledge of their various structural, electronic, and magnetic properties. Hence it seemed useful to the editors to bring together scientists and engineers to discuss, in a tutorial setting, the various properties of these and future hard magnetic materials. We believe the inclusion of engineers as well as scientists in these discussions was essential because the design of new magnetic materials depends very much upon the mode in which they are used in practical devices.
Download or read book Magneto Resistive and Spin Valve Heads written by John C. Mallinson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2001-09-27 with total page 207 pages. Most of the material is presented in a nonmathematical manner to make it more digestible for researchers, students, developers, and engineers. In addition to revising and updating material available in the first edition, Mallinson has added nine new chapters dealing with various aspects concerning spin valves, the electron spin tunneling effect, the electrostatic discharge effects, read amplifiers, and signal-to-noise ratios, making this a completely up-to-date reference. The previous edition of Magneto-Resistive Heads was the first volume in the new Academic Press series in Electromagnetism edited by Professor Isaak Mayergoyz, who is a well-recognized expert in the field.
Download or read book Blazing Trails written by Vern Overbye and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2002-10-14 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the late 1950s and the 1960s, Vern Overbye and John Brauer joined with four other engineers of diverse backgrounds at A.O. Smith's corporate headquarters in Milwaukee to embark on an unprecedented and unanticipated path of innovation. Each had an advanced degree and, more importantly, each had an entrepreneurial spirit. With their forward-looking, optimistic manager at Smith's Data Systems Division, Robert Y. Bodine, they built a path-breaking business in the fledgling technology of finite element analysis that is still impacting the fortunes of the companies that became their customers. Together they helped transform a rarefied aerospace technology into a design tool now used to design in a staggering variety of applications and industries. "I will propose that Data Systems should be particularly bullish in adaptive creative technology-it simply pays, but, in fact, growth, not to say survival, depends on it." Robert Y. Bodine, January 1978

Download or read book Electrochemistry in Transition written by Brian E. Conway and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 669 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book originated out of the papers presented at the special symposium, "Electrochemistry in Transition-From the 20th to the 21st Century," scheduled by the Division of Colloid and Surface Science during the American Chemical Society meeting in Toronto. The symposium was in honor of Professor J. O'M. Bockris, who received the ACS award on "The Chemistry of Contemporary Technological Problems" (sponsored by Mobay Corporation) during this meeting and who also reached his 65th birthday in the same year. The symposium was of a multidisciplinary nature and encompassed the fields of theoretical and experimental elec trochemistry, surface science, spectroscopy, and electrochemical technology. The symposium also had an international flavor in that the participants represented several countries Australia, Belgium, Canada, Chile, England, Japan, Korea, the Netherlands, Poland, Switzer land, Venezuela, Yugoslavia, and the United States. The symposium was graciously sponsored by the ACS (Petroleum Research Fund and Division of Colloid and Surface Science), Alcan International, Dow Chemical Company, EG&G, Electrolyzer Corporation, Exxon, General Electric Company, IBM, Institute of Gas Technology, International Association of Hydrogen Energy, Johnson Matthey, Inc. , Kerr-McGee Corporation, Medtronics, and Texas A&M University (Center for Electrochemical Systems and Hydrogen Research and the Hampton Robinson Fund). The "theme" of the papers presented at the symposium covered not only significant contributions made to electrochemistry in the twentieth century, but also "New Horizons in Electrochemistry" for the twenty-first century. Thus, the scientists who presented papers were invited to contribute chapters to this book, having the same titles as the symposium.

Book excerpt: This is the second volume on "Optical Information Processing" within the scope of the US-USSR Science Cooperation Program co sponsored by the US National Science Foundation and the USSR Acad emy of Sciences Siberian Branch. Volume I was published in 1976, also by Plenum Press, and con tained the papers presented by a group of US and USSR scientists at the First US-USSR Science Cooperation Seminar "Optical Informa tion Processing" held at the US National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D. C. from 16 to 20 June 1975. The seminar was followed by a series of visits to US scientific research laboratories and universities, to which the visiting USSR scientists were escorted bv Dr. W. E. Kock and Dr. G. W. Stroke. The visits included Bell Laboratories, IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Laboratory and M. I. T. , as reported in detail in the FOREWORD of Volume I. Volume II now presents the papers presented by another group of US and USSR scientists, some having participated in the first seminar: this series of papers was presented at the Second US-USSR Science Cooperation Seminar on "Optical Information Processing" held at the USSR Academy of Sciences Siberian Branch Institute of Auto mation and Electrometry in the famous "science city" of Akademgorodok, near Novosibirsk in Siberia, USSR from 10 to 16 July 1976.
