Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by TPRC at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemina tion phases of the activity was transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we have concluded that it will be in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by a well-known publishing house to assure improved service and better communication. Hence, effective with this Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences will be disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. As we embark on this new partnership with Plenum, we also initiate a new venture in that this important annual reference work now covers Canadian universities as well as those in the United States. We are sure that this broader base will greatly enhance the value of these volumes.

Book excerpt: "The experimental investigation was conducted to determine temperature distribution and convective heat transfer coefficients in terms of Nusselt number for an inclined heated flat plate in air. The heated surface of the aluminum flat plate was set facing upward and moved through seven positions from the vertical to the horizontal. The investigation shows that the local Nusselt number can be predicted by Kiekus's solution within 12 per cent for inclination angles from the vertical through 75° from the vertical. In the case of the vertical position, Eckert's solution gives a better prediction. For the horizontal position the results show good agreement with the equation which is recommended by McAdams, with 8 per cent"--Abstract, leaf ii.

Book excerpt: A study was made of the effects of transpiration mass addition on heat transfer from a flat plate in steady state free convection. The investigation was conducted using a vertical plate heated to temperatures up to 150F. The effects of low blowing rates on heat transfer were determined by investigating the effects on the surface heat transfer coefficient, the boundary layer temperature profile, and the Nusselt, Prandtl and Grashof number relationship. An interferometer was used to visually observe the boundary layer and to provide a direct means of calculating the heat transfer coefficients and temperature profiles. Blowing was found to greatly reduce the surface heat transfer coefficient and change the boundary layer temperature profile by reducing the surface temperature gradient. This study also indicates that it may be feasible to apply the equation relating Nusselt, Prandtl and Grashof numbers for free convection to include mass addition by transpiration. (Author).

Book excerpt: An interferometer study of the effect of reduced pressure on free convection from a vertical plate is presented. The interferometer was used to visually observe the boundary layer on the plate and to determine the heat transfer coefficient over a range of pressure from 0.987 to 0.09 atm. The free-convective heat transfer coefficient was experimentally found to be proportional to the 0.47 power of the pressure which is within experimental limits of the theoretical prediction (0.50 power of the pressure). The boundary layer thickness was observed to increase as the pressure was reduced. (Author).
