Book Reciprocal Interference Effects Between Weeds and Soybeans Glycine Max Measured by Area of Influence Methodology

Download or read book Reciprocal Interference Effects Between Weeds and Soybeans Glycine Max Measured by Area of Influence Methodology written by J.L. Gunsolus and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A better understanding of weed-soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) interference is necessary before accurate damage thresholds can be determined for weeds growing in soybeans. The objective of this study was to use area of influence methodology to evaluate weed-soybean interference. This objective was accomplished by: (a) monitoring the length and area of soybean row influenced by one common cocklebur (Xanthium strumarium L.) and one sicklepod (Cassia obtusifolia L.) plant throughout a growing season and (b) monitoring soybean interference effects on the vegetative growth of these two weed species. Results from this two-year field study indicate that in both years, soybeans' first measurable effect on common cocklebur and sicklepod vegetative dvelopment occurred betweeen the sixth and eighth week after palnting, and soybean continued to strongly interfere with common cocklebur and sicklepod development over the course of the growing season. However, common cocklebur was less affected than sicklepod by soybean interference. Common cocklebur's first measurable effects on soybean vegetative development occurred 10 weeks after planting in 1984 and 12 weeks after planting in 1985. Sicklepod's first measurable effect on soybean growth occurred 12 weeks after planting in both years. Weed interference effects were greatest on soybean plants closest to the weed and decreased linearly with increasing distance from the weed. At seed harvest, the number of soyban pods per plant was the primary yield component influenced (...).

Book Understanding Options for Agricultural Production

Download or read book Understanding Options for Agricultural Production written by G.Y. Tsuji and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first premise of this book is that farmers need access to options for improving their situation. In agricultural terms, these options might be manage ment alternatives or different crops to grow, that can stabilize or increase household income, that reduce soil degradation and dependence on off-farm inputs, or that exploit local market opportunities. Farmers need a facilitating environment, in which affordable credit is available if needed, in which policies are conducive to judicious management of natural resources, and in which costs and prices of production are stable. Another key ingredient of this facilitating environment is information: an understanding of which options are viable, how these operate at the farm level, and what their impact may be on the things that farmers perceive as being important. The second premise is that systems analysis and simulation have an impor tant role to play in fostering this understanding of options, traditional field experimentation being time-consuming and costly. This book summarizes the activities of the International Benchmark Sites Network for Agrotechnology Transfer (IBSNAT) project, an international initiative funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). IBSNAT was an attempt to demonstrate the effectiveness of understanding options through systems analysis and simulation for the ultimate benefit of farm households in the tropics and subtropics. The idea for the book was first suggested at one of the last IBSNAT group meetings held at the University of Hawaii in 1993.

Book Pest Management in Soybean

Download or read book Pest Management in Soybean written by L.G. Copping and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the third in a series of volumes on major tropical and sub-tropical crops. These books aim to review the current state of the art in management of the total spectrum of pests and diseases which affect these crops in each major growing area using a multi-disciplinary approach. Soybean is economically the most important legume in the world. It is nutritious and easily digested, and is one of the richest and cheapest sources of protein. It is currently vital for the sustenance of many people and it will play an integral role in any future attempts to relieve world hunger. Soybean seed contains about 17% of oil and about 63% of meal, half of which is protein. Modern research has developed a variety of uses for soybean oil. It is processed into margarine, shortening, mayonnaise, salad creams and vegetarian cheeses. Industrially it is used in resins, plastics, paints, adhesives, fertilisers, sizing for cloth, linoleum backing, fire extinguishing materials, printing inks and a variety of other products. Soybean meal is a high-protein meat substitute and is used in the developed countries in many processed foods, including baby foods, but mainly as a feed for livestock. Soybean (Glycine max), which evolved from Glycine ussuriensis, a wild legume native to northern China, has been known and used in China since the eleventh century Be. It was introduced into Europe in the eighteenth century and into the United States in 1804 as an ornamental garden plant in Philadelphia.

Book excerpt: Allelopathic studies may be defined in various aspects; weed against weed/crop and vice versa. This book focuses on the ways to utilize the allelopathic potential of weeds or crops for controlling weeds in the agroecosystems. Vigorous use of herbicides is poisoning our environment at an alarming rate; allelopathy can be employed as a useful alternative to control weeds naturally under field conditions. The book contains chapters on the history of allelopathy; allelopathic potential of several important crops (rice, wheat, sorghum, maize, mustard, sunflower) and weeds (members of Solanaceae, Convolvulaceae, Asteraceae, Verbenaceae). Moreover, it highlights how the allelopathic potential of these weeds and crops can be employed effectively to suppress weeds under field conditions. The book also discusses topics on the role of allelochemicals in agroecosystems; impact on local flora; biotic stress induced by allelochemicals; mechanism of action of allelochemicals and future prospective of allelopathy. Prepared with basic concepts and importance of allelopathy, this book is intended for the agricultural community, botanists, students and researchers.
