Book Linguistic Pragmatics of Intercultural Professional and Business Communication

This book was released on 2017-11-14 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Topics covered include: analysis of the theory of business communication, of codified and uncodified vocabulary, theory of euphemy, and euphemisms used in intercultural professional and business communication.

Book Terms in Context

Download or read book Terms in Context written by Jennifer Pearson and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1998-05-15 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Terms in Context applies the methodology that has been developed over the last two decades in corpus linguistics to the relatively new and still little developed field of corpus-based terminography. While corpora are already being used by some terminologists for the identification of terms and retrieval of contextual fragments, this book describes the first attempt to use corpora for terminography in much the same way as large general reference corpora are already being used for general language lexicography. The author goes beyond the standard problem of identifying terms as opposed to non-terminological lexical items in text and focuses on identifying metalanguage patterns which point to the presence in text of (parts of) reusable definitions of terms. The author examines these patterns and shows how the information which they contain can be retrieved and used as input for terminological entries. Terms in Context should be of interest to ‘traditional’ terminologists who have not previously considered adopting a corpus-based approach to their work or at least not on the scale proposed here; to ‘modern’ terminologists who use text primarily for the identification of terms and the retrieval of contextual examples; to those in the corpus linguistic community who have hitherto used general language corpora for the purposes of lexicography and have not previously considered using special purpose corpora for more specific lexicography studies; and to academics in the ESP/LSP community who are interested in showing students how to use text as a means of ascertaining the meaning of terms.

Book Intercultural Contact Language Learning and Migration

Download or read book Intercultural Contact Language Learning and Migration written by Barbara Geraghty and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-09-25 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the heart of this volume lies an exploration of what actually happens to languages and their users when cultures come into contact. What actions do supra-national institutions, nation states, communities and individuals take in response to questions raised by the increasingly diverse forms of migration experienced in a globalized world? The volume reveals the profound impact that decisions made at national and international level can have on the lives of the individual migrant, language student, or speech community. Equally, it evaluates the broader ramifications of actions taken by migrant communities and individual language learners around issues of language learning, language maintenance and intercultural contact. Reflecting Jan Blommaert's assertion that in a world shaped by globalization, what is needed is 'a theory of language in society... of changing language in a changing society', this volume argues that researchers must increasingly seek diverse methodological approaches if they are to do justice to the diversity of experience and response they encounter.

Book Compensation for Damage in International Investment Arbitration

Download or read book Compensation for Damage in International Investment Arbitration written by Mikael Ouaniche and published by Bruylant. This book was released on 2022-09-09 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first to combine a legal and an economic approach to the violation of international investment law and the evaluation of their financial consequences. It is intended for arbitrators, lawyers, legal experts and financial experts. It will also be useful for academics who study this issue, which crosses disciplinary lines. The cross-disciplinary approach proposed by Mikael Ouaniche and Stéphane Prigent in this original work reflects the dual nature of the debates that irrigate the practice of State-investor arbitration, through a rigorous analysis of arbitral case law. As Laurent Jaeger, President of the French Arbitration Committee, who prefaced the book, says: “Lawyers and arbitrators will be able to improve their understanding of economic and financial valuation methods; experts will be able to improve their understanding of the underlying legal mechanisms. [...] It took all the experience and talent of Mikael Ouaniche and Stéphane Prigent to marry law, economics and finance so harmoniously”.

Download or read book International Law and Time written by Klara Polackova Van der Ploeg and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-12-16 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the close, complex and consequential – yet to a large extent implicit – relationship between international law and time. There is a conspicuous discrepancy between international law’s technical preoccupation with the mechanics of temporal rules and the absence of more foundational considerations of how time – both as an irrepressible physical dimension manifesting in the passage of time, and as a social construct shaped by diverse social and cultural factors – impacts and interacts with international law. Divided into five parts and 21 chapters, this book explores key aspects of the relationship between international law and time and puts the spotlight on time’s fundamental significance for international law as a legal order and as a discipline. Pursuing diverse approaches to international law, the authors consider the notion, significance, manifestations, uses and implications of time in international law in a wide range of contexts, and offer insights into the various ways in which international law and international lawyers cope with time, both in terms of constructing narratives and in devising and employing particular legal techniques.
