Book excerpt: Intercity Travel Data Search is an annotated bibliography on U.S. domestic intercity passenger travel by the four major modes of air, auto, bus and rail. The bibliography is concentrated on three subject areas: (1) survey data on point-to-point intercity passenger volumes; (2) survey data on the socioeconomic, attitudinal and trip behavior characteristics of intercity travelers, and (3) demand models for predicting point-to-point intercity travel. The bibliography totals 422 items, almost all published after 1964. Approximately 100 of these are in the first two subject areas and the remaining 300 are in the third subject area. Foreign publications are included in this bibliography, which also contains author and geographic indexes of the 422 items. (Author).

It describes the various facets of planning, designing, conducting, and evaluating household travel surveys. This report of the Transportation Research Board provides information on the manner in which many household surveys are currently carried out and provides comment on the likely changes in the process, in the survey instrument, and in the application of more cost-effective methods of data collection in household travel surveys. This synthesis describes the methods for collection, including survey instrument design, as well as testing and administering the surveys. Information on time and cost requirements is also included, as are descriptions of evaluation and data analysis methods.

Book excerpt: A research study was conducted to define the social and economic factors affecting intercity travel and to use the resulting relationships with existing traffic prediction tools to predict intercity travel. Data used were the external origin-and-destination surveys of 22 cities. Another source of data was the U.S. census. Trip data from the origination-destination studies were summarized by trip purposes and by increasing time rings from the study area centroids. A stepwise regression analysis computer program was used to determine the relationship between trips and social and economic data. In an alternate analysis procedure, the survey data were utilized to determine the amount and characteristics of intercity trip generation.

Book excerpt: This report describes an evaluation of the effect on intercity bus ridership of changes in frequency of service and cost. The study was based on a comparison of travel between 19 selected cities in Virginia served by air, bus, or rail. These modes were compared with highway travel by auto using various assumptions of energy availability. The effect of increasing the frequency of bus service was also investigated to determine if it is a viable means for attracting additional travel demands. Network data for each mode consisted of travel time, cost, and frequency of service. These data were applied to three state of-the-art intercity travel demand models selected from eleven reported in the literature. A status quo demand estimate was produced for travel within the Virginia system and the results were compared with demand resulting from increasing the number of bus departures per day and increasing per mile auto costs. The effect of increases in bus fare due to rising fuel costs was also determined. The results of this investigation indicate that intercity bus travel demand will not be significantly altered with increases in the number of bus departures per day, but will increase as costs of auto fuel rise. The intercity demand model developed by the state of Michigan yielded the most consistent results of all models tested.
