Book Light Matter Interaction

Download or read book Light Matter Interaction written by John Weiner and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-01-26 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Light-matter interaction is pervasive throughout the disciplines of optical and atomic physics, condensed matter physics, electrical engineering, and now increasingly in biology and medicine with frequency and length scales extending over many orders of magnitude. Deep earth and sea communications use frequencies of a few tens of Hz, and X-ray imaging requires sources oscillating at hundreds of petaHz. This book provides advanced undergraduates, graduate students and researchers from diverse disciplines with the principal tools required to understand and contribute to rapidly advancing developments in light-matter interaction, centred at optical frequencies and length scales from a few hundred nanometres to a few hundredths of a nanometre. This book deploys an arsenal of powerful analytic tools to render this multidisciplinary subject in unique form, not encountered in standard Physics or Electrical Engineering text books. This new edition has been substantially expanded with almost 200 pages of new material. Several new and extended chapters treat momentum flow between fields and matter, metamaterials, and atom-optical forces applied to atomic and molecular cooling and trapping.

Book Second Language Interaction in Diverse Educational Contexts

Download or read book Second Language Interaction in Diverse Educational Contexts written by Kim McDonough and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together empirical research that explores interaction in a wide range of educational settings. It includes work that takes a cognitive, brain-based approach to studying interaction, as well as studies that take a social, contextual perspective. Interaction is defined quite broadly, with many chapters focusing on oral interaction as is typical in the field, while other chapters report work that involves interaction between learners and technology. Several studies describe the linguistic and discourse features of interaction between learners and their interlocutors, but others demonstrate how interaction can serve other purposes, such as to inform placement decisions. The chapters in the book collectively illustrate the diversity of contemporary approaches to interaction research, investigating interactions with different interlocutors ( learner-learner, learner-teacher), in a variety of environments (classrooms, interactive testing environments, conversation groups) and through different modalities (oral and written, face-to-face and technology-mediated).

Book Open Spaces for Interactions and Learning Diversities

Download or read book Open Spaces for Interactions and Learning Diversities written by Alessio Surian and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-08 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "While changes related to cultural diversity are visible and at work in social, cultural and political contexts, cultural diversity as such is being ignored or rejected across many countries. It is the denial or hidden nature of diversity in educational settings and learning processes, reflected in the marginalisation of this topic, that this book wants to address. The book chapters are blind peer reviewed and draw from a variety of learning settings across the world. They are intended to open up spaces to talk, promote and struggle for the relevance of addressing learning diversities. This includes current and new directions for theoretical and methodological discussions. They concern spaces of interaction and diversity research across single and multiple moments, different contexts and various time scales. They also explore the diversity of theories used to address these issues and how we theorize the relationship between centres and margins in understanding the idea of opening spaces for dialogue."

Book The Quantum Phase Operator

Download or read book The Quantum Phase Operator written by Stephen M. Barnett and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2007-04-27 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describing the phase of an electromagnetic field mode or harmonic oscillator has been an obstacle since the early days of modern quantum theory. The quantum phase operator was even more problematic with the invention of the maser and laser in the 1950s and 1960s. This problem was not solved until the Pegg-Barnett formalism was developed in the 1980s. Edited by one of the scientists who created this key solution, The Quantum Phase Operator: A Review charts the development of phase and angle operators from their first appearance to modern theory. Bringing together vital works that have been published on the subject, the book presents the ideas that led to the current theory of the phase operator and provides a complete picture of the progress that has followed since then. With introductions by the editors to put the papers in context and unify the content of the book, each section focuses on a different aspect of phase operators. The editors also chronologically organize the papers within the sections to highlight how scientific thought has evolved, if at all, over time. A collection of important relevant material that is scattered throughout the literature, this volume chronicles the history of the various facets of the quantum phase operator, promoting a solid foundation in quantum theory.

Book Boundaries and Borders in the Post Yugoslav Space

Download or read book Boundaries and Borders in the Post Yugoslav Space written by Nenad Stefanov and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-10-25 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The disintegration of Yugoslavia, accompanied by the emergence of new borders, is paradigmatically highlighting the relevance of borders in processes of societal change, crisis and conflict. This is even more the case, if we consider the violent practices that evolved out of populist discourse of ethnically homogenous bounded space in this process that happened in the wars in Yugoslavia in the 1990ies. Exploring the boundaries of Yugoslavia is not just relevant in the context of Balkan area studies, but the sketched phenomena acquire much wider importance, and can be helpful in order to better understand the dynamics of b/ordering societal space, that are so characteristic for our present situation.

Book Theoretical Alchemy

Download or read book Theoretical Alchemy written by Walter Harrison and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2010 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The best way to understand chemical bonding may be to take a view appropriate to each individual system, a view which may be quite different for various systems. Sometimes two very different views are appropriate for the same system, and then the combination may even give the parameters needed to estimate the bonding energy by hand. Density Functional Theory, on the other hand, generally tries to take one view as applicable to all systems, and proceeds computationally. In contrast to the author's two previous well-known textbooks, Electronic Structure and the Properties of Solids (1989) and Elementary Electronic Structure (1999), in this book he tries to distill the essence of the representation of electronic structure in a much briefer description. It is shortened by focusing primarily on the bonding energies, the energy gained in assembling atoms as a molecule or a solid, or as a solid with a surface. A central point is that the same description of the electronic structure which gives this cohesion, can also be used to understand all of the other properties, though those other properties are not emphasized here. The effort is characterized by the title, which combines the modern word ?theory? with the ancient effort of ?alchemy? to make sense of the material world.

Book Few Body Problems in Particle Nuclear Atomic and Molecular Physics

Download or read book Few Body Problems in Particle Nuclear Atomic and Molecular Physics written by Jean-Louis Ballot and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 601 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1987 Fontevraud Conference gathered more than 100 physicists for the purpose of discussing the latest developments of research on few-body problems. In addition to participants from most European countries representatives from Brazil, Canada, Israel, Japan, South Africa, and the USA took part in the meeting. In the conference program special emphasis was laid on bringing together the various fields, where few-body problems play an important role. Beyond the traditional areas of nuclear and particle physics, in recent years interest has been focussed especially on atomic and molecular physics. This developent is due to the design of new techniques for solving few-body problems under rather general premises. The proceedings contain all plenary talks and the contributions presented orally at the conference. They cover such topics as: few-quark systems and short-range phenomena, two- and three-body forces in quark as well as nucleonic systems, few-hadron bound states, response of few-body systems to electromagnetic and hadronic probes, form factors, hypernuclei, atomic and molecular few-body systems, hyperspherical method, separable expansions, numerical techniques, etc. It appears that recently, even in one year after the Tokyo-Sendai Conference, much progress has been achieved in research on various few-body systems. The present volume gives a comprehensive summary of the modern state of the art and at the same time a proper account of the most recent results obtained in the different institutions and laboratories.

Book The Nucleon nucleon Interaction and the Nuclear Many body Problem

Download or read book The Nucleon nucleon Interaction and the Nuclear Many body Problem written by Gerald E. Brown and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2010 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive overview of some key developments in the understanding of the nucleon-nucleon interaction and nuclear many-body theory. The main problems at the level of meson exchange physics have been solved, and we have an effective field theory using a phenomenological interaction pioneered by Achim Schwenk and Scott Bogner, which is nearly universally accepted as a unique low-momentum interaction that includes all experimental data to date. This understanding is based on a multi-step development in which different scientific insights and a wide range of physical and mathematical methodologies fed into each other. It is best appreciated by looking at the different 'steps along the way', starting with the pioneering work of Brueckner and his collaborators that was just as necessary and important as the insightful masterly improvements to Brueckner's theory by Hans Bethe and his students. Moving on from there, the off-shell effects that bedeviled Bethe's work — which had resulted in the 1963 Reference Spectrum Method — were treated relatively accurately by introducing an energy gap between initial bound states and an intermediate state. With their influential 1967 paper, Brown and Kuo prepared the effective field theory. Later, the introduction of 'Brown-Rho scaling' deepened understanding of saturation in the many-body system and fed directly into recent work on carbon-14 dating.

Book Design and Analysis of Experiments Volume 1

Download or read book Design and Analysis of Experiments Volume 1 written by Klaus Hinkelmann and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2007-12-17 with total page 678 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This user-friendly new edition reflects a modern and accessible approach to experimental design and analysis Design and Analysis of Experiments, Volume 1, Second Edition provides a general introduction to the philosophy, theory, and practice of designing scientific comparative experiments and also details the intricacies that are often encountered throughout the design and analysis processes. With the addition of extensive numerical examples and expanded treatment of key concepts, this book further addresses the needs of practitioners and successfully provides a solid understanding of the relationship between the quality of experimental design and the validity of conclusions. This Second Edition continues to provide the theoretical basis of the principles of experimental design in conjunction with the statistical framework within which to apply the fundamental concepts. The difference between experimental studies and observational studies is addressed, along with a discussion of the various components of experimental design: the error-control design, the treatment design, and the observation design. A series of error-control designs are presented based on fundamental design principles, such as randomization, local control (blocking), the Latin square principle, the split-unit principle, and the notion of factorial treatment structure. This book also emphasizes the practical aspects of designing and analyzing experiments and features: Increased coverage of the practical aspects of designing and analyzing experiments, complete with the steps needed to plan and construct an experiment A case study that explores the various types of interaction between both treatment and blocking factors, and numerical and graphical techniques are provided to analyze and interpret these interactions Discussion of the important distinctions between two types of blocking factors and their role in the process of drawing statistical inferences from an experiment A new chapter devoted entirely to repeated measures, highlighting its relationship to split-plot and split-block designs Numerical examples using SAS® to illustrate the analyses of data from various designs and to construct factorial designs that relate the results to the theoretical derivations Design and Analysis of Experiments, Volume 1, Second Edition is an ideal textbook for first-year graduate courses in experimental design and also serves as a practical, hands-on reference for statisticians and researchers across a wide array of subject areas, including biological sciences, engineering, medicine, pharmacology, psychology, and business.
