Book Inter American Relations in an Era of Globalization

Download or read book Inter American Relations in an Era of Globalization written by Jorge Neg and published by . This book was released on 2007-02-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection provides new information and analytical perspectives on how the forces of globalization and regional integration are altering the basic nature of interactions between the states, non-state actors and peoples of the Americas. The authors examine and assess the effects of the United States government's doctrines of unilateralism and preemptive action on Inter-American relations; they analyze the role of civil society and non-state actors such as transnational companies, non-governmental organizations, and new political movements in the relations between the states and societies of the Americas; and they reveal the extent to which the above processes and conditions are affecting economic, political, social, and cultural developments at the local level (and vice-versa). Jorge Nef has published over 100 articles and chapters and is author or co-author of more than a dozen books. His main areas of interest are political economy and human security. He is a Professor and Director of Latin American Studies at the University of South Florida. Professor Harry E. Vanden teaches political science and Latin American Studies at the University of South Florida. In addition to writing numerous articles, he has published several books on inter-American relations, terrorism, globalization and new political movements in Latin America.

Book excerpt: This volume is a collection of essays presented at the 20th annual Eugene Scassa Mock Organization of American States conference, which is the nation’s only “hybrid” conference including an inter-collegiate competition and simulation of the Organization of American States, a moot court simulation of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, and a traditional academic conference for faculty and graduate students centered on the study of Inter-American relations and politics within the Western Hemisphere. The conference invited recognized authorities and promising new scholars in the vastly varied fields associated with Latin American studies. Taking a broad view of the academic study of the Western Hemisphere, the conference and, subsequently, this volume includes research from fields as diverse as international law, spatial geography, literature, religion, political science, and history. Taken together, these essays provide a fascinating multi-dimensional look at the intricate relationships between the polities and cultures of the Americas.

Book Critical Dictionary of Inter American Studies Volume I

Download or read book Critical Dictionary of Inter American Studies Volume I written by Olaf Kaltmeier and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-08-28 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Critical Dictionary of Inter-American studies charts the field by focusing on the transnational or hemispheric dimensions of social, cultural and political dynamics in the Americas in history and contemporary times. The ever increasing and multi-layered processes of integration and transnationalization in the Americas entail the necessity of a standard reference book for both scholars and students capturing the terminological and methodological rethinking of (trans)area studies in the current era of globalization. The Critical Dictionary defines areas as transversally, multiply connected and in process, and as comprehensible only within the larger frameworks of a North-South dialogue, mobility and entanglements. In order to organize the broad field of Inter-American studies, the dictionary is divided into five subject oriented volumes: âe~History and (Post-)Colonialityâe(tm), âe~Politics and Societiesâe(tm), âe~Media and Communicationâe(tm), as well as âe~Literature, the Arts and Popular Culturesâe(tm) and 'Political Economy and Governance' cross-indexed volumes and contain approximately 100 entries and a conceptual introduction. Each of these volumes is conceived as a platform of interdisciplinary dialogue containing entries which are written against the backdrop of a broad range of different disciplinary approaches. The Critical Dictionary seeks to provide the terminology needed to explore the hemispheric space of entanglements in the Americas as a new perspective in area studies. As a standard reference book the focus on the dynamics of entanglements in the Americas puts emphasis on the mutual construction of meaning and concept perspective. Conceptually it stresses the dimension of âe~interâe(tm) as a discursive zone to capture the dynamics, negotiations and power relations of knowledge production from diverse loci of enunciation. Due to its interdisciplinary approach, the dictionary is of interest to a broad array of academic disciplines and as such a must have to any library collection.

The creative economy, which we call the "Orange Economy" in this book (you'll see why), encompasses the immense wealth of talent, intellectual property, interconnectedness, and, of course, cultural heritage of the Latin American and Caribbean region (and indeed, every region). At the end of this manual, you will have the knowledge base necessary to understand and explain what the Orange Economy is and why it is so important. You will also acquire the analytical tools needed to take better advantage of opportunities across the arts, heritage, media, and creative services.
