The number of autonomous devices is expected to reach trillions in total. Autonomous devices range from home thermostats to industrial sensors. To route communication from these devices to the end-user, a base station is required. Collectively, the base station and autonomous devices form a wireless sensor network. However, the proliferation of wireless sensor networks has led to an unprecedented energy management crisis on two fronts. First is energy generation, for which establishing methods of self-powering are critically important since battery replacement is infeasible for the trillions of autonomous devices. The second is efficient power use by the base station. Efficient power delivery to the RF power amplifier (PA) is imperative, which dissipates a majority of base station power. Motivated by these core challenges, this dissertation presents techniques for energy management and harvesting to achieve self-powered operation and envelope tracking techniques for optimized power delivery to the base station RF PA. First, a reconfigurable energy management unit (EMU) is introduced. The EMU achieves unification of an energy source, energy storage, voltage regulation, and energy recycling for dynamic voltage scaling by implementing multi-directional energy flow control. A reconfigurable switching converter architecture is implemented to accommodate flexible voltage conversion and multi-directional energy flow. Furthermore, supercapacitors are employed to enhance operation lifetime. Second, a piezoelectric vibration energy harvester is developed to achieve self-powered operation. However, significant challenges remain unresolved with regard to harvesting from time-varying vibrations. To overcome these challenges, an adaptive impedance matching technique is proposed. To retain reasonable efficiency at low power levels, the controller is designed with nanopower circuits. Last, a switching-converter-only envelope modulator is developed to achieve efficient power delivery to the base station PA. Conventionally, a linear regulator is required to attain fast tracking, but is a significant source of efficiency degradation. To eliminate the linear regulator, a dual-phase switching converter with synchronized adaptive voltage tracking (SAVT) control is employed. SAVT control enables synchronization and fast hysteretic response for voltage tracking. To overcome the switching converter slew rate limit, a push-pull slew rate enhancer is implemented.

Existing methods in this area have primarily focused on energy conservation through the use of various communication techniques. However, in most applications of wireless sensor networks, savings in energy come at the expense of several performance parameters. Therefore it is necessary to manage energy consumption while being conscious of its effects on performance. In most cases, such energy-performance issues are specific to the nature of the application. Our research has been motivated by new techniques and applications where efficient energy-performance trade-off decisions are required. We primarily study the following trade-off cases: energy and node replacement costs (Case I), energy and delay (Case II), and energy and availability (Case III). We consider these trade-off situations separately in three distinct problem scenarios. In the first problem (Case I), we consider minimizing energy and node replacement costs in underwater wireless sensor networks for seismic monitoring application. In this case, we introduce mixed-integer programming (MIP) formulations based on a combined routing and node replacement policy approach and develop effective policies for large problem instances where our MIP models are intractable. In the second problem (Case II), we develop a Markov decision process (MDP) model to manage energy-delay trade-off in network coding which is a new energy-saving technique for wireless networks. Here we derive properties of the optimal policy and develop insights into other simple policies that are later shown to be efficient in particular situations. In the third problem (Case III), we consider an autonomous energy harvesting sensor network where nodes are turned off from time to time to operate in an "energy-neutral" manner. In this case, we use stochastic fluid-flow analysis to evaluate and analyze the availability of the sensor nodes under effective energy management policies. In each of the above problem cases, we develop analytical formulations, and derive and/or analyze policies that effectively manage the considered energy-performance trade-off. Overall, our analyses and solution methods make new contributions to both operations research and communication networking literature. Prior to joining Penn State, Dr. LaPorta was with Bell Laboratories since 1986. He was the Director of the Mobile Networking Research Department Bell Laboratories, Lucent Technologies, where he led various projects in wireless and mobile networking. He is an IEEE Fellow, Bell Labs Fellow, received the Bell Labs Distinguished Technical Staff Award, and an Eta Kappa Nu Outstanding Young Electrical Engineer Award. He has published over 50 technical papers and holds over 20 patents. Christopher Griffin holds a Masters degree in Mathematics from Penn State and is currently pursuing his Ph.D. there. Mr. Griffin has worked as a research engineer at the Penn State Applied Research Laboratory for the last six years on several DARPA and or Army Research Laboratory sponsored programs, including: the Emergent Surveillance Plexus (ESP) program as a lead engineer; the DARPA sponsored Semantic Information Fusion program under the SensIT initiative, where he co-developed a distributed target tracking system and managed the development of a target classification algorithm using Level 1 sensor fusion techniques; as a co-principal software architect for the DARPA Joint Force Component Controller (JFACC) initiative, an adaptive C2 program aimed at improving Air Force response times; and he was the principal software architect for the Boeing/ARFL Insertion of Embedding Infosphere Technology (IEIST) program. His areas of research expertise are distributed tracking systems, mission oriented control, and system modeling.
