Book Almgren s Big Regularity Paper Q valued Functions Minimizing Dirichlet s Integral And The Regularit

Download or read book Almgren s Big Regularity Paper Q valued Functions Minimizing Dirichlet s Integral And The Regularit written by Vladimir Scheffer and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2000-06-30 with total page 973 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fred Almgren exploited the excess method for proving regularity theorems in the calculus of variations. His techniques yielded Hölder continuous differentiability except for a small closed singular set. In the sixties and seventies Almgren refined and generalized his methods. Between 1974 and 1984 he wrote a 1,700-page proof that was his most ambitious development of his ground-breaking ideas. Originally, this monograph was available only as a three-volume work of limited circulation. The entire text is faithfully reproduced here. This book gives a complete proof of the interior regularity of an area-minimizing rectifiable current up to Hausdorff codimension 2. The argument uses the theory of Q-valued functions, which is developed in detail. For example, this work shows how first variation estimates from squash and squeeze deformations yield a monotonicity theorem for the normalized frequency of oscillation of a Q-valued function that minimizes a generalized Dirichlet integral. The principal features of the book include an extension theorem analogous to Kirszbraun's theorem and theorems on the approximation in mass of nearly flat mass-minimizing rectifiable currents by graphs and images of Lipschitz Q-valued functions.

Book Handbook of Mathematical Formulas and Integrals

Download or read book Handbook of Mathematical Formulas and Integrals written by Alan Jeffrey and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2008-01-18 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The extensive additions, and the inclusion of a new chapter, has made this classic work by Jeffrey, now joined by co-author Dr. H.H. Dai, an even more essential reference for researchers and students in applied mathematics, engineering, and physics. It provides quick access to important formulas, relationships between functions, and mathematical techniques that range from matrix theory and integrals of commonly occurring functions to vector calculus, ordinary and partial differential equations, special functions, Fourier series, orthogonal polynomials, and Laplace and Fourier transforms. During the preparation of this edition full advantage was taken of the recently updated seventh edition of Gradshteyn and Ryzhik's Table of Integrals, Series, and Products and other important reference works. Suggestions from users of the third edition of the Handbook have resulted in the expansion of many sections, and because of the relevance to boundary value problems for the Laplace equation in the plane, a new chapter on conformal mapping, has been added, complete with an atlas of useful mappings. - Comprehensive coverage in reference form of the branches of mathematics used in science and engineering - Organized to make results involving integrals and functions easy to locate - Results illustrated by worked examples

This book was released on 2009-11-03 with total page 519 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the reviews: "...the book contains a wealth of material essential to the researcher concerned with multiple integral variational problems and with elliptic partial differential equations. The book not only reports the researches of the author but also the contributions of his contemporaries in the same and related fields. The book undoubtedly will become a standard reference for researchers in these areas. ...The book is addressed mainly to mature mathematical analysts. However, any student of analysis will be greatly rewarded by a careful study of this book." M. R. Hestenes in Journal of Optimization Theory and Applications "The work intertwines in masterly fashion results of classical analysis, topology, and the theory of manifolds and thus presents a comprehensive treatise of the theory of multiple integral variational problems." L. Schmetterer in Monatshefte für Mathematik "The book is very clearly exposed and contains the last modern theory in this domain. A comprehensive bibliography ends the book." M. Download or read book How to Integrate It written by Seán M. Stewart and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While differentiating elementary functions is merely a skill, finding their integrals is an art. This practical introduction to the art of integration gives readers the tools and confidence to tackle common and uncommon integrals. After a review of the basic properties of the Riemann integral, each chapter is devoted to a particular technique of elementary integration. Thorough explanations and plentiful worked examples prepare the reader for the extensive exercises at the end of each chapter. These exercises increase in difficulty from warm-up problems, through drill examples, to challenging extensions which illustrate such advanced topics as the irrationality of π and e, the solution of the Basel problem, Leibniz's series and Wallis's product. The author's accessible and engaging manner will appeal to a wide audience, including students, teachers and self-learners. The book can serve as a complete introduction to finding elementary integrals, or as a supplementary text for any beginning course in calculus.

Book Math with Bad Drawings

Download or read book Math with Bad Drawings written by Ben Orlin and published by Black Dog & Leventhal. This book was released on 2018-09-18 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A hilarious reeducation in mathematics-full of joy, jokes, and stick figures-that sheds light on the countless practical and wonderful ways that math structures and shapes our world. In Math With Bad Drawings, Ben Orlin reveals to us what math actually is; its myriad uses, its strange symbols, and the wild leaps of logic and faith that define the usually impenetrable work of the mathematician. Truth and knowledge come in multiple forms: colorful drawings, encouraging jokes, and the stories and insights of an empathetic teacher who believes that math should belong to everyone. Orlin shows us how to think like a mathematician by teaching us a brand-new game of tic-tac-toe, how to understand an economic crises by rolling a pair of dice, and the mathematical headache that ensues when attempting to build a spherical Death Star. Every discussion in the book is illustrated with Orlin's trademark "bad drawings," which convey his message and insights with perfect pitch and clarity. With 24 chapters covering topics from the electoral college to human genetics to the reasons not to trust statistics, Math with Bad Drawings is a life-changing book for the math-estranged and math-enamored alike.

Book Dirichlet s Principle Conformal Mapping and Minimal Surfaces

Download or read book Dirichlet s Principle Conformal Mapping and Minimal Surfaces written by R. Courant and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has always been a temptation for mathematicians to present the crystallized product of their thoughts as a deductive general theory and to relegate the individual mathematical phenomenon into the role of an example. The reader who submits to the dogmatic form will be easily indoctrinated. Enlightenment, however, must come from an understanding of motives; live mathematical development springs from specific natural problems which can be easily understood, but whose solutions are difficult and demand new methods of more general significance. The present book deals with subjects of this category. It is written in a style which, as the author hopes, expresses adequately the balance and tension between the individuality of mathematical objects and the generality of mathematical methods. The author has been interested in Dirichlet's Principle and its various applications since his days as a student under David Hilbert. Plans for writing a book on these topics were revived when Jesse Douglas' work suggested to him a close connection between Dirichlet's Principle and basic problems concerning minimal sur faces. But war work and other duties intervened; even now, after much delay, the book appears in a much less polished and complete form than the author would have liked."
