Book New trends for innovation in the Mediterranean animal production

Download or read book New trends for innovation in the Mediterranean animal production written by R. Bouche and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-03-26 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mediterranean area shows a great diversity of livestock systems, depending on local resources and traditions, but also on the networking space where informational resources are available for producers. During the last decades, a lot of innovations have been conceived or introduced in the Mediterranean area, allowing livestock systems to remain competitive. The book looks at two main issues: firstly, it gives an updated review on the main innovations that significantly changed the activities of livestock production in the Mediterranean area in the recent past. Secondly, the focus lies on the extent to which these innovations improve the efficiency, ensure the socio-cultural basis or reduce the environmental impact of livestock systems. One major finding is a new vision of innovating systems based on the distinction between regulated innovation (when aims are fixed) and innovative design (when aims are questioned). Innovations reported in the book are dealing with a set of concerns. They concern the production techniques, the work organization, the equipment and infrastructures, the collective features for selection, reproduction, feeding or sanitary devices. They also concern the local organization such as product labelling, new dynamics around local breeds, collective rules for supply basin or approaches of new products for new markets. More recently, some innovations focus on environmental impacts of livestock production, due to an increasing consciousness of those kinds of problems. In the final part of the book, a round table copes with a crucial question: are traditions in Mediterranean livestock activities to be considered an obstacle or a source of innovation? This book provides a set of updated information and knowledge useful for researchers, students, extension services and policy-makers in the field of animal science.

Book Basic Tests for Drugs

Download or read book Basic Tests for Drugs written by World Health Organization and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 1998 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a step-by-step guide to simple methods for verifying the identity of commonly used pharmaceutical substances and dosage forms. The basic tests described can also be used to detect mislabeled, substandard, or counterfeit products when the labeling or physical attributes give rise to doubt. Intended for use in developing countries, where resources and specialized skills may be scarce, all tests rely on a limited range of easily available reagents and equipment and need not be performed in a fully equipped laboratory or by persons with specialized training in pharmacy or chemistry. The book describes tests for 23 pharmaceutical substances and 58 pharmaceutical dosage forms, most of which are included in the WHO Model List of Essential Drugs. Basic tests for confirming the identity of four commonly used medicinal plant materials are also included. As stressed in the text, these tests, which merely confirm identity, are intended for use as primary screening tools and may need to be followed, in cases of adverse test results, by a full pharmacopoeial analysis. The book opens with a brief description of the importance of basic tests as one of the many steps needed to ensure a supply of safe and effective drugs. Chapter two describes several collections of more sophisticated tests, including volumetric or spectrophotometric analysis and thin-layer chromatography, that can be useful in the primary screening of imported pharmaceutical substances, and dosage forms. Information on how to obtain and use these guides to tests, which have not been published by WHO is also provided. Against this background, the main part of the book sets out test procedures for verifying the identity of selected pharmaceutical substances, pharmaceutical dosage forms, and medicinal plant materials. The book concludes with a cumulative index of test procedures described here and in the related WHO publications "Basic Tests for Pharmaceutical Substances" and "Basic Tests for Pharmaceutical Dosage Forms".

Download or read book Wings for Our Courage written by Stephanie H Jed and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2011-06 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On January 6, 1537, Lorenzino de’ Medici murdered Alessandro de’ Medici, the duke of Florence. This episode is significant in literature and drama, in Florentine history, and in the history of republican thought, because Lorenzino, a classical scholar, fashioned himself after Brutus as a republican tyrant-slayer. Wings for Our Courage offers an epistemological critique of this republican politics, its invisible oppressions, and its power by reorganizing the meaning of Lorenzino’s assassination around issues of gender, the body, and political subjectivity. Stephanie H. Jed brings into brilliant conversation figures including the Venetian nun and political theorist Archangela Tarabotti, the French feminist writer Hortense Allart, and others in a study that closely examines the material bases—manuscripts, letters, books, archives, and bodies—of writing as generators of social relations that organize and conserve knowledge in particular political arrangements. In her highly original study Jed reorganizes republicanism in history, providing a new theoretical framework for understanding the work of the scholar and the social structures of archives, libraries, and erudition in which she is inscribed.
