Data for three grades of beryllium covering a range in impact velocities from 20 to 200 in/sec (.5 to 5 mm/s) are obtained in the form of load-deflection curves from which maximum load, maximum deflection, and total energy are obtained. Results show good agreement with data on identical materials obtained from an instrumented impact test at 54 in/sec (1.37 m/s) and from a standard Charpy impact machine at 135 in/sec (3.43 m/s). The advantages and limitations of the Hopkinson bar apparatus are discussed.

The output data from performing these calculations may have applications that include energy analysis, biomechanical analysis, regulation compliance, or other purposes. However, application of the output data from these calculations is outside the scope of this document. It is the intent of this document to present a basic set of calculations that are applicable to test labs that follow the practices set forth by SAE J211-1, SAE J211-2, SAE J2570, and SAE J1733. For the calculations that are described in other sources, the relevant documents are referenced. The committee reviewed this Recommended Practice to determine what changes were necessary to include the set of calculations, methods, and indexes that are typically calculated by labs performing impact tests. These recommendations are not subject to any variation and all of them should be adhered to by any agency conducting tests to this practice. However, the method of demonstrating compliance with the recommendations is flexible and can be adapted to suit the needs of the particular equipment the agency is using. It is not intended that each recommendation be taken in a literal sense, as necessitating a single test to demonstrate that the recommendation is met. Rather, it is intended that any agency proposing to conduct tests to this document should be able to demonstrate that if such a single test could be and were carried out, then their equipment would meet the recommendations. This demonstration should be undertaken on the basis of reasonable deductions from evidence in their possession, such as the results of partial tests. In some systems it may be necessary to divide the whole channel into subsystems for calibration and checking purposes. The recommendations have been written only for the whole channel, as this is the sole route by which subsystem performances affect the quality of the output. If it is difficult to measure the whole channel performance, which is usually the case, the test agency may treat the channel as two or more convenient subsystems. The whole channel performance could then be demonstrated on the basis of subsystem results, together with a rationale for combining the subsystem results together. SAE J211/1 covers electronic instrumentation and SAE J211/2 covers photographic instrumentation. The purpose of this document is to provide guidelines and recommendations for the techniques of measurement used in impact tests. The aim is to achieve uniformity in instrumentation practice and in reporting test results. Use of this document will provide a basis for meaningful comparisons of test results from different sources.
