Book excerpt: Excerpt from Instrumental Music in the Public Worship of the Church It will, no doubt, be said that the attempt to prove the unjustifiable employment of instrumental music in the public worship of the Church is schismatical, since the practice is now well-nigh universal; that it is trivial, inasmuch as it concerns a mere circumstantial in the services of religion; and that it is useless, as the ten deney which is resisted is 1nv1nclble, and is destined to triumph throughout Protestant Christendom. To all this one answer alone is offered, and it is sufficient, namely: that the attempt is grounded in truth. It in volves a contest for a mighty and all-comprehending principle, by opposmg one of the special forms in which it is now commonly transcended and violated. It is that principle, emphasized in the following re marks as scriptural and regulative, that lends impor tance to the discussion, and redeems it from the re proach of being narrow and trifling. Aegument Prom The Old Testament. In the Jewish dispensation God was pleased to proceed in accordance with the great principle which has been signalized, in regard to the introduction of instrumental music into the public worship of his people. He kept the ordering of this part of his formal and instituted worship in his own hands. There is positive proof that it was never made an element of that worship except by his express command. Without his warrant it was excluded; only with it was it employed. 1. Let us notice the operation of this principle with reference to the tabernacle-worship. Moses received the mode of constructing the tabernacle and the order of its worship by divine revelation. "See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern showed to thee in the mount." It will be admitted that the instructions thus divinely given descended to the most minute details--the sort of fabrics and skins to be used, and their diverse colors, the pins, the ouches and the taches, the ablutions, the vestments and the actions of the officiating priests and Levites, the ingredients of the holy ointment and the incense, the parts, the arrangements, the instruments of worship, --to everything connected with the tabernacle these specific directions referred. Of course, if God had intended instrumental music to be employed, it would have been included in these particular directions; the instruments would have been specified for its performance, and regulations enjoined for its use. What, now, are the facts? No directions are given respecting instruments of music. Two instruments of sound are provided for, but they were of such a character as to make it impracticable to use them ordinarily as accompaniments of the voice in singing....

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Church Pastorals: Hymns and Tunes for Public and Social Worship Leaving out of view these arrangements, should the reader find the phra acology of well-known Hymns varying here from that to which he has been accustomed, he may safely infer that the authors of the Hymns are alone responsible for the present forms of expression. The same may be said of old melodies in familiar use with modern arrangements. Mottoes over the Hymns, and figures at their sides, have been omitted, as cumbersome and needless. Book Plain Music for the Book of Common Prayer

Download or read book Plain Music for the Book of Common Prayer written by George Thomas Rider and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-25 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plain Music for the Book of Common Prayer: Being a Complete Collection of Sacred Music for the Worship of the Protestant Episcopal Church; Designed Especially for Congregational Use This work, then, is mainly one of arrangement and compilation. In its arrangement, the outline of the Liturgy has been as steadily adhered to as was practicable, so that the Plain Music might be with the Prayer Book. The convenience of this to the worshipper will be at once apparent. Concerning the compilation the question was, what to reject from the great mass of material at hand, but scattered through a dozen different publications. While it was designed to supply good music for all the occasions of our worship, it was also meant to include nothing that was not strictly pertinent and useful. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Music in the Church This free, though very expressive, school of singing came to an end with the establishment of a Liturgy; it is very probable, however, that some of the best effusions of the Agapae were pre served, and even admitted into the regular service of later times. These fervid songs of earliest Christianity were unaccompanied, for it would have been very difficult for any one to follow the singer in his untrammelled chant. Many of the early Christians (chiefly of the humbler walks of life) were unable to play the instruments, and these also had been too freely used in theatre and pagan service to make them welcome at any Christian cere mony. They convene at stated hours, before sunrise, and sing, each in turn, praise of Christ as of a god, says Pliny the Younger in describing the musical service of the Christians of his time. Book A Cappella Music in the Public Worship of the Church

Download or read book A Cappella Music in the Public Worship of the Church written by Everett Ferguson and published by Victor Vadney. This book was released on 2013 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book employs a methodology that I have found helpful in dealing with other topics. This procedure is to assemble the New Testament texts on the topic and interpret them, then check this interpretation against usage in early Christian literature outside the New Testament, and finally to examine the doctrinal considerations to determine if the interpretation rests on solid biblical theology. Rather than gathering quotations from secondary literature, my approach is to read the source documents in the original and present the texts in their context. At the time of first edition of the book, mine was the fullest collection of historical statements on early church music readily available. Other studies since that time are largely supportive of the historical facts presented in my work, even if the authors do not consider the evidence normative for today. My conclusion is that the practice of unaccompanied congregational singing rests on good biblical, historical and doctrinal grounds.

It is well known that books on a similar plan have already come into general use in other denominations, and have been found to be of great advantage in increasing the interest of public worship; and a desire for a hymn and tune book expressly adapted to our wants and tastes has been growing more and more urgent. Till it seemed a clear case both of duty and interest for the Associa tion to assume the task of meeting it.
