Book Mormon Passage

Download or read book Mormon Passage written by Gary Shepherd and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is the first to present detailed, first-person accounts of the Mormon missionary experience. Armed with little more than youthful vigor and firmly held religious convictions, twins Gary and Gordon Shepherd left their home in Salt Lake City in 1964 for two years as missionaries in Mexico. Mormon Passage is one result of that experience, a combination of diaries and field notes kept by the two during their mission and sociological analyses of their experiences. The brothers' goal is to help readers understand the consequences of the missionary experience for the vitality of Mormon religious life. "Seldom has excellent research been woven so tightly with personal experience. . . . Very well written, a compelling narrative and an absorbing analysis." -- Lavina Fielding Anderson, coeditor of Sisters in Spirit: Mormon Women in Historical and Cultural Perspective

Download or read book Preparing the Way written by Barry A. Baker and published by Archway Publishing. This book was released on 2021-09-02 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “From small and simple to grand and glorious” sends an immediate message to many readers, but to those who do not instantly envision examples before them, Preparing the Way seeks to reveal elements of past, present, and future events, woven together to set the stage for the great and dreadful day of the Lord. This paradigm stage is set for all to discover. One of the clearest principles of world history is that everything we see before us today had a small beginning somewhere, somehow, influenced by someone. Remarkably enough, these events have prepared the way for the restoration of the church that Jesus Himself organized in His day and age. Through miraculous occurrences, His church is again upon the earth to prepare the way for His second coming to preside over His kingdom for the one-thousand-year millennial rule and reign—Jesus as King of kings and Lord of lords. Thoroughly researched and supported, this study invites you to embrace the knowledge that the same church that Jesus organized in the ancient Holy Land has been restored to the earth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A groundbreaking new theory of religion Religion remains an important influence in the world today, yet the social sciences are still not adequately equipped to understand and explain it. This book advances an innovative theory of religion that goes beyond the problematic theoretical paradigms of the past. Drawing on the philosophy of critical realism and personalist social theory, Christian Smith explores why humans are religious in the first place—uniquely so as a species—and offers an account of secularization and religious innovation and persistence that breaks the logjam in which religious scholarship has been stuck for so long. Certain to stimulate debate and inspire promising new avenues of scholarship, Religion features a wealth of illustrations and examples that help to make its concepts accessible to readers. This superbly written book brings sound theoretical thinking to a perennially thorny subject, and a new vitality and focus to its study.

Book Mandarin Chinese Dual Language Immersion Programs

Download or read book Mandarin Chinese Dual Language Immersion Programs written by Ko-Yin Sung and published by Multilingual Matters. This book was released on 2019-06-05 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses multiple aspects of Chinese dual language immersion (DLI) programs, with a focus on the controversial Utah model. The first part of the book focuses on the parents, teachers, and school administrators. It looks at the perceptions of the three groups toward the Utah model, how they build a supportive DLI classroom with an emphasis on teacher–teacher and teacher–parent communication, and how the teachers position themselves in teaching through their teacher identities. The second part of the book emphasizes classroom research and explores teaching and learning strategies, corrective feedback and learner uptake and repair, translanguaging in authentic teacher–student interaction, and Chinese-character teaching. As the first DLI book to include a non-alphabetical language, Chinese, it addresses the need for more research on DLI programs of languages other than Spanish. The book will benefit not only Chinese DLI educators and administrators in the US, but will also offer some useful suggestions and thoughts to educators and administrators of similar programs worldwide.

Introductory chapters provide historical perspectives on this population and on language teaching philosophy and practice in the LDS tradition. The empirical studies which follow are divided into two sections, the first examining mission language acquisition by English-speaking missionaries abroad, the second focusing on post-mission language attrition. These chapters by internationally known scholars offer cutting-edge research using a number of different target languages in addressing various issues in second language development. Finally, a comprehensive bibliography of sources on mission languages is included. The readership of this pioneering work is expected to extend beyond specialists in study abroad and missionary language training to a broader audience of applied linguists, educators, and students interested in language acquisition and attrition. In addition, the book offers useful insights to adults who want to maintain a second language.

Book Field Finds

  • Author : ,Barbara
  • Publisher : Page Publishing Inc
  • Release : 2023-05-01
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 96 pages

Download or read book Field Finds written by ,Barbara and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2023-05-01 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a memorial to C. W. Bynum. He was a passionate lifelong arrowhead hunter and collector. His plan was for himself and Barbara to write the book together during their retirement. This book documents three collections. First, a pictorial display of some of his collection, then a section of poetry mostly by Barbara, and finally a documentation of a collection of old-time herbal remedies. CW was a masonry instructor at Wallace College, and he would ask his students to get remedies from the old folks they knew he loved reading them and wanted them included in the book. So much knowledge about the arrowheads in this book was lost when CW died, but the points remain as a reminder of him to his family. This book was written so that the author and whoever else is interested can remember the feeling of walking in the Alabama fields after a rain with a beloved companion looking for treasure. It was a good journey.

Book House of Faith House of Cards

Download or read book House of Faith House of Cards written by Eric N. Davis and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-05 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Concise. Vivid. Honest." - Dan Barker, critically acclaimed author of 'Godless' and 'Losing Faith in Faith' "Brutally honest, insightful, and compelling storytelling." - Lyndon Lamborn, author of 'Standing for Something More' When a young couple searched for clues connecting them to a famous ancestor, their journey led them on a path they never expected - converting to Mormonism. House of Faith House of Cards tells the turbulent life story of their son, Eric, including all the typical Mormon experiences, and some extraordinary episodes no Mormon will ever encounter. He participated with family members in his first secret temple ritual - normally reserved for adults - at the age of four, only to be excluded from a similar ceremony, involving his family, thirteen years later. In 1857, a company of 120 immigrants set out from a small Arkansas town, toward California. In a tragic twist of fate, they never reached their destination. While encamped in southern Utah, local Mormons and Paiute Indians launched an ambush, brutally slaughtering the group, in what became known as the Mountain Meadows massacre. 125 years later, Eric would be raised as a Mormon in the same Arkansas community where this wagon train initially departed. There, he learned just how much some people still despised that faith. While training for and serving a church mission in Canada, in the mid-1990s, Eric shared a room and became acquainted with a fellow missionary named Mark Hacking. Less than a decade later, when the disappearance and murder of Hacking's wife became highly publicized, several international media outlets approached Eric, searching for any juicy detail of the man's troubled past. These stories are just the tip of the iceberg.
