Download or read book Managing Institutional Self Study written by Watson, David and published by McGraw-Hill Education (UK). This book was released on 2005-02-01 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the use of evidence in the leadership and management of universities and colleges. The role of institutional self-study in establishing strategy and measuring progress is examined across the full range of institutional activities, with many worked examples. Practical guidance is also set in the context of theory about organisational learning within complex enterprises at the start of the 21st century, as well as an account of the state of the art within higher education in the UK, with some international comparisons. Because of the nature of the business – knowledge production and use –universities should be better at organisational learning than they are. This book shows how disciplined self-study can assist decision-making, general effectiveness and reputational positioning for universities and colleges. The book explores why self-study matters, the key processes and techniques, as well as what can be delivered. In addition to the internal drivers to enhance self-study capacity and practice, institutions are increasingly required to produce explicit and transparent accounts of their activities and performance to external bodies, to support marketing, to respond to multiple stakeholders and to meet external reporting and regulatory requirements. At the heart of the book is the case for the development of the university or college as a mature, self-reflective community, making full use of its analytical and other resources.

Download or read book Women s Colleges in the United States written by Irene Harwarth and published by Department of Education. This book was released on 1997 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the role of women's colleges in the United States from the early 1800s to the present. It reviews how they began, how they changed as more colleges became coeducational, and the legality of publically supported single-sex colleges. The book also looks at what women's colleges are like today and examines differences in institutional effects for students who choose to attend women's colleges versus those who attend coeducational institutions. The four chapters, written by different authors, are titled: (1) "Women's Colleges in the United States, A Historical Context" (Elizabeth DeBra); (2) "Women's Colleges in the United States, Recent Issues and Challenges" (Irene Harwarth and Florence Fasanelli); (3) "Women's Colleges in the United States, A Statistical Portrait" (Irene Harwarth); and (4) "Women's Colleges in the United States, An Overview of Research and Questions for the Future" (Mindi Maline). An appendix contains 18 tables with data on enrollment by size and type of institution, by geographic region, and for selected years; degrees awarded; staffing at private 4-year colleges by occupational category, sex, and Carnegie classification; and average salary of full-time faculty at women's colleges by sex and Carnegie classification. Download or read book Fall Enrollment in Postsecondary Institutions 1996 written by Samuel Barbett and published by U.S. Government Printing Office. This book was released on 1998 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents enrollment data for four-year and two-year postsecondary institutions that were eligible for Title IV federal financial aid in 1996. Data were obtained from the 1996 fall enrollment survey. Survey findings are presented in five major sections: (1) characteristics of enrolled students; (2) types of institutions attended; (3) attendance status; (4) changes in enrollment, 1992-96; and (5) enrollment by state. Section 1 includes data for all postsecondary institutions, while Sections 2 through 5 focus on degree-granting institutions. A highlights section identifies key findings such as the following: in 1996, 14.8 million students were enrolled in the nation's 6,404 Title IV-eligible postsecondary institutions; black students comprised 11 percent of undergraduates at degree-granting institutions, but only 7.2 percent of graduate students; among all students, 77.4 percent attended public degree-granting institutions; overall, 59.2 percent of undergraduate students and 42.3 percent of graduate students attended school full-time; and between 1995 and 1996 there was a decline in enrollment at public four-year institutions and an increase in enrollment at public two-year institutions. Detailed statistical tables for degree-granting institutions are presented in the first four appendices. The fifth appendix provides technical notes on study methodology. (DB)
