Book On the Three dimensional Instability of Laminar Boundary Layers on Concave Walls

Download or read book On the Three dimensional Instability of Laminar Boundary Layers on Concave Walls written by Henry Görtler and published by . This book was released on 1954 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study is made of the stability of laminar boundary-layer profiles on slightly curved walls relative to small disturbances that result from vortices whose axes are parallel to the principal direction of flow. The result is an eigenvalue problem by which, for a given undisturbed flow at a prescribed wall, the amplification or decay is computed for each Reynolds number and each vortex thickness. For neutral disturbances (zero amplification) a critical Reynolds number is determined for each vortex distribution. The numerical calculation produces amplified disturbances on concave walls only.

Book Theory and Computation in Hydrodynamic Stability

Download or read book Theory and Computation in Hydrodynamic Stability written by W. O. Criminale and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-12-06 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of hydrodynamic stability is fundamental to many subjects, ranging from geophysics and meteorology through to engineering design. This treatise covers both classical and modern aspects of the subject, systematically developing it from the simplest physical problems, then progressing to the most complex, considering linear and nonlinear situations, and analyzing temporal and spatial stability. The authors examine each problem both analytically and numerically. Many relevant fluid flows are treated, including those where the fluid may be compressible, or those from geophysics, or those that require salient geometries for description. Details of initial-value problems are explored equally with those of stability. The text includes copious illustrations and an extensive bibliography, making it suitable for courses on hydrodynamic stability or as an authoritative reference for researchers. In this second edition the opportunity has been taken to update the text and, most importantly, provide solutions to the numerous extended exercises.

Book Elements of Transitional Boundary Layer Flowlements

Download or read book Elements of Transitional Boundary Layer Flowlements written by Robert Edward Mayle and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2018 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Second Enhanced Edition Suitable for advanced-level courses or an independent study in fluid mechanics, this text by an expert in the field provides the basic aspects of laminar-to-turbulent flow transition in boundary layers. Logically organized into three major parts, the book covers pre- and post-transitional flow, transitional flow, and several advanced topics in periodically disturbed transitional flow. Some of the subjects covered within the book include high-frequency unsteady laminar flow, turbulent flow, natural transition, bypass transition, turbulent spot theory, turbulent spot kinematics and production, correlations for the onset and rate of transition, global and conditional averaging, transitional flow models, wakeinduced transition, multimode transition, and separated-flow transition. Containing some 202 figures (all drawn by the author), 28 tables, 12 appendices, a supplement on tensors, and an extensive bibliography, the 415 page book provides a wealth of data and information about the subject.

Book The Origin of Turbulence in Near Wall Flows

Download or read book The Origin of Turbulence in Near Wall Flows written by A.V. Boiko and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Origin of Species Charles Darwin The origin of turbulence in fluids is a long-standing problem and has been the focus of research for decades due to its great importance in a variety of engineering applications. Furthermore, the study of the origin of turbulence is part of the fundamental physical problem of turbulence description and the philosophical problem of determinism and chaos. At the end of the nineteenth century, Reynolds and Rayleigh conjectured that the reason of the transition of laminar flow to the 'sinuous' state is in stability which results in amplification of wavy disturbances and breakdown of the laminar regime. Heisenberg (1924) was the founder of linear hydrody namic stability theory. The first calculations of boundary layer stability were fulfilled in pioneer works of Tollmien (1929) and Schlichting (1932, 1933). Later Taylor (1936) hypothesized that the transition to turbulence is initi ated by free-stream oscillations inducing local separations near wall. Up to the 1940s, skepticism of the stability theory predominated, in particular due to the experimental results of Dryden (1934, 1936). Only the experiments of Schubauer and Skramstad (1948) revealed the determining role of insta bility waves in the transition. Now it is well established that the transition to turbulence in shear flows at small and moderate levels of environmental disturbances occurs through development of instability waves in the initial laminar flow. In Chapter 1 we start with the fundamentals of stability theory, employing results of the early studies and recent advances.

Book Stability of Parallel Flows

Download or read book Stability of Parallel Flows written by R. Betchov and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stability of Parallel Flows provides information pertinent to hydrodynamical stability. This book explores the stability problems that occur in various fields, including electronics, mechanics, oceanography, administration, economics, as well as naval and aeronautical engineering. Organized into two parts encompassing 10 chapters, this book starts with an overview of the general equations of a two-dimensional incompressible flow. This text then explores the stability of a laminar boundary layer and presents the equation of the inviscid approximation. Other chapters present the general equations governing an incompressible three-dimensional flow, which requires the massive use of a computer. This book discusses as well the experimental studies on the oscillations of the boundary layer wherein the mean flow is affected by the presence of oscillations. The final chapter describes the concept of the stability of turbulent flows found in boundary layers, wakes, and jets. This book is a valuable resource for physicists, mathematicians, engineers, scientists, and researchers.

Book IUTAM Symposium on Mechanics of Passive and Active Flow Control

Download or read book IUTAM Symposium on Mechanics of Passive and Active Flow Control written by G.E.A. Meier and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The call for papers for the rUTAM-Symposium on Mechanics of Passive and Active Flow Control brought an overwhelming response of applications for contributions. Fi nally 12 invited lectures, 48 papers and 23 posters were selected by thc Scientific Com mittee to be presented in the conference. 58 papers are published in this volume. Due to the limited number of pages available, poster presentations could not be considered for publication. The editors would like to thank all the members of the Scientific Committee for their very valuable assistance. The papers presented at the rUT AM Symposium were classified under three groups de voted to • Passive Control Methods, • Active Control Methods and • Control Concepts. This was done to contrast at first between the passive techniques where the control power is mainly supplied by the flow itself and the active techniques where the power is pro vided by external sources; the third group was devoted to control concepts for presenting methods of control theory and new techniques of flow control.
