Book excerpt: This wide-ranging collection of inspirational poetry and prose offers readers solace, perspective, and the courage to persevere. In times of personal hardship or collective anxiety, words have the power to provide comfort, meaning, and hope. The past year has seen a resurgence of poetry and inspiring quotes—posted on social media, appearing on bestseller lists, shared from friend to friend. Honoring this communal spirit, How Lovely the Ruins is a timeless collection of both classic and contemporary poetry and short prose that can be of help in difficult times—selections that offer wisdom and purpose, and that allow us to step out of our current moment to gain a new perspective on the world around us as well as the world within. The poets and writers featured in this book represent the diversity of our country as well as voices beyond our borders, including Maya Angelou, W. H. Auden, Danez Smith, Rumi, Emily Dickinson, Naomi Shihab Nye, Alice Walker, Adam Zagajewski, Langston Hughes, Wendell Berry, Anna Akhmatova, Yehuda Amichai, and Robert Frost. And the book opens with a stunning foreword by Elizabeth Alexander, whose poem “Praise Song for the Day,” delivered at the inauguration of President Barack Obama, ushered in an era of optimism. In works celebrating our capacity for compassion, our patriotism, our right to protest, and our ability to persevere, How Lovely the Ruins is a beacon that illuminates our shared humanity, allowing us connection in a fractured world. • Pages : 114 pages

Download or read book Be My Inspiration written by James Taris and published by . This book was released on 2020-09-11 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is crammed with positive and inspirational words. Written over a period of 38 years, you will find a wide variety of subjects and situations covered within these 'green pages'. It's unfortunate that in today's world people are very quick to criticise and ridicule, when it would be just as easy and so much more productive to praise and encourage instead. James Taris used these poems to block out all the negatives he came across in his daily life. By replacing them with these self-motivating and uplifting verses, he built his confidence in spite of the nay-sayers all around him. Written in chronological order (newest to oldest) you can follow James' journey back through time to the very beginning. It is an inspirational journey in itself, with autobiographical stories accompanying each poem to help the reader become more acquainted with James' life story, thus being able to relate to his poems much better.LIFE IS SHORT ENJOY ITLife is short. You are only on this planet for a maximum of 120 years. So much to do and so little time. So, you may as well enjoy it.That joy comes from doing what you love. The more you put that off, the unhappier you are.I have been very fortunate in my life. I have been able to do mostly whatever I wanted: travelling the world, acting on stage and in films, modelling, working as a flight attendant, running a photo studio, and writing books... just to name a few.But it wasn't always that way. There is a growing up period that starts from our early teens. That period of adolescence when we develop from children to adults is particularly difficult. It was for me. Luckily, however, I had my poems.Growing up is a challenge for all of us. We all learn to handle it in our own special way. For me, I coped with it by writing poems.Over fifty years ago, I wrote my first song called How Does De Do. Looking at it now, I can see how unbelievably bad it was. Yet back in 1968 when I was just thirteen, it was my greatest treasure. Such is the value we place on our creations.I had never set a goal to become a poet or songwriter. My writing was always for my pleasure and amusement. On many occasions, I also used my writing for self-therapy. During my years of depression from 1972-1973, I found my poems to be extremely therapeutic.Whereas girls find it quite easy to share their feelings with their close friends, guys tend to keep their feelings bottled up. My writing was my outlet. It allowed me to externalise my feelings so I could better understand and cope with them.Fortunately, in 1974 I was introduced to positive thinking and immediately my writing took a sharp turn towards hope and ambition. This anthology of poems is my way of preserving not only my works but also my life history; growing up from a young thirteen-year-old-teenager, to a mature man with a plethora of life experience.Presenting my poems chronologically was a way to show the development of my writing over the years. However, I could not bring myself to start with my earliest works because I was afraid that I would lose my readers before they had a chance to flip the first page. So, it is written in reverse, with the most recent poems in front of the book.Over 40 years, from 1968 to 2008, I wrote nearly 200 songs and poems. The LIFE IN RHYME Series is the collection of my most popular works. Book 1: Be My InspirationInspirational PoemsBook 2: Tickle My FancyFunny and Fun PoemsBook 3: Chance for RomanceLove PoemsBook 4: Just Wanna DieDepressing PoemsOriginally published in 4 separate books - as above - my anthology of poems has also been published as a complete anthology in Life is Short Enjoy ItThis is a unique style of poetry book that I haven't seen before. It is for the poetry enthusiast who loves poetry but is also intrigued to know the stories behind each poem.

These poems reflect my life as God would dictate. I give Him all the glory in helping me to create this and other books, plays and CDs and so on. They were all inspired by Him. And I couldn't have done it without the Lord on my side.I love the Lord and if loving the lord is wrong I don't wanna be right. I grew up in church before there was musical instruments. And now technology has revolutionized the music industry as well as other industries I can create all of my music right from my home computer. I hope you are inspired by the poems in this book.
