As a part of this program, a project team at Iowa State University has undertaken a research effort that focuses on the evaluation and repair of the steel sheet pile structures within the Corps' civilian projects. These structures do not require a great deal of maintenance but failure of a steel sheet pile wall can significantly affect operations--especially as part of a lock and dam facility. In the following document, a general description of the current inspection and rating system is given. This includes the definition of a condition index and a brief description of sheet pile distresses. A detailed description of the inspection process follows. Once the inspection data have been gathered, they are entered onto a computer disk through a personal computer (PC) program.
