Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1985, this book brings together diverse perspectives of global policy and experience concerning threatened or high levels of youth unemployment and the measures taken in the countries concerned. From the examples quoted it is obvious that there was little consensus concerning what one is led to believe life after school is about or what one would like life after school to be about, and how these expectations and aspirations may be accommodated.

Download or read book Young People in Transition the Local Investment written by Jeremy Harrison and published by Berlin : European Centre for the Development of Vocational Training. This book was released on 1987 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written for practitioners rather than policymakers, this document is intended for those who seek to relate educational and training opportunities to local and individual needs; use fresh approaches to integrated services for young people trapped by unemployment, social and economic change, and poor living conditions; and achieve high quality efforts for the lowest cost. An introduction suggests how to use the handbook. Part 1 addresses the situation of young people in transition from school to work, including the importance of better-organized services and programs with a local focus. Seven initiatives in six member states of the European Community are featured. Part 2 discusses education and training for the future, including what is permitted, what is possible, relevant issues and principles, the needs of young people, local delivery of services, coordinating resources and agencies, and the special problems of nonindustrial areas. Part 3 offers a planned approach to providing services in a coordinated and integrated manner. Part 4 takes up national and community policies, mechanisms, guidelines, policy frameworks, and proposals. Part 5 describes the following seven initiatives mentioned in Part 1: (1) Business School/Technical School in Randers, Denmark; (2) Verbundsystem Oberhausen, West Geramny; (3) Missions Locale for the Transition of Young People to Adult and Working Life in Lorient, France; (4) Mission Locale for the Transition of Young People to Adult and Working Life in La Rochelle, France; (5) Cork Vocational Education Committee/An Chomhairle Oiliuna (Comtec), Ireland; (6) Contactcentrum Onderwijs Arbeid Limburg, The Netherlands; and (7) Sussex Training (West), England. Download or read book From Manual Workers to Wage Laborers written by Robert Castel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this monumental book, sociologist Robert Castel reconstructs the history of what he calls "the social question," or the ways in which both labor and social welfare have been organized from the Middle Ages onward to contemporary industrial society. Throughout, the author identifies two constants bearing directly on the question of who is entitled to relief and who can be excluded: the degree of embeddedness in any given community and the ability to work. Along this dual axis the author locates virtually the entire history of social welfare in early-modern and contemporary Europe. This work is a systematic defense of the meaningfulness of the category of "the social," written in the tradition of Foucault, Durkheim, and Marx. Castel imaginatively builds on Durkheim's insight into the essentially social basis of work and welfare. Castel populates his sociological framework with vivid characterizations of the transient lives of the "disaffiliated": those colorful itinerants whose very existence proved such a threat to the social fabric of early-modern Europe. Not surprisingly, he discovers that the cruel and punitive measures often directed against these marginal figures are deeply implicated in the techniques and institutions of power and social control. The author also treats the flipside of the problem of social assistance: namely, matters of work and wage-labor. Castel brilliantly reveals how the seemingly objective line of demarcation between able-bodied beggars those who are capable of work but who chose not to do so and those who are truly disabled becomes stretched in modernity to make room for the category of the "working poor." It is the novel crisis posed by those masses of population who are unable to maintain themselves by their labor alone that most deeply challenges modern societies and forges recognizably modern policies of social assistance. The author's gloss on the social question also offers us valuable perspectives on contempo

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: France is unique in the world in the degree to which is has tried to integrate technical and vocational training in its schools. Day (history, Simon Fraser U.) examines this reform in France since the late-nineteenth century, within the broader context of educational development and economic modernization. His analysis demonstrates ways in which government and industry have redefined skill requirements, reformed schools and programs, and established new forms of cooperation--work-study, continuing education, apprenticeship programs--to produce a well-educated and well-trained citizenry and workforce. c.
