Book excerpt: Heinrich Kuhl (1797-1821) and Johan Conrad van Hasselt (1797-1823) studied natural history and medicine respectively at the University of Groningen, The Netherlands from 1816 till 1820. During their studies they travelled widely through Europe, and met with famous scientists of the day in Germany, England and France. Due to their extraordinary qualities they were, in 1820, appointed by the Dutch government as the first delegates of the newly founded Commission for the Study of the Natural Sciences of the Netherlands East Indies to study the natural history of that region. Unfortunately their promising lives were cut short by their premature death. This biography describes their lives, their considerable accomplishments in Europe and the Dutch East Indies, and their place in the scientific community at the time, especially in zoological systematics. The results of their systematic studies are shown to be still relevant to present-day science.

Download or read book Inseparable written by Simone de Beauvoir and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2021-09-07 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finalist for the French-American Florence Gould Translation Prize A novel by the iconic Simone de Beauvoir of an intense and vivid girlhood friendship that, unpublished in her lifetime, displays “Beauvoir's genius as a fiction writer”(Wall Street Journal) From the moment Sylvie and Andrée meet in their Parisian day school, they see in each other an accomplice with whom to confront the mysteries of girlhood. For the next ten years, the two are the closest of friends and confidantes as they explore life in a post-World War One France, and as Andrée becomes increasingly reckless and rebellious, edging closer to peril. Sylvie, insightful and observant, sees a France of clashing ideals and religious hypocrisy—and at an early age is determined to form her own opinions. Andrée, a tempestuous dreamer, is inclined to melodrama and romance. Despite their different natures they rely on each other to safeguard their secrets while entering adulthood in a world that did not pay much attention to the wills and desires of young women. Deemed too intimate to publish during Simone de Beauvoir’s life, Inseparable offers fresh insight into the groundbreaking feminist’s own coming-of-age; her transformative, tragic friendship with her childhood friend Zaza Lacoin; and how her youthful relationships shaped her philosophy. Sandra Smith’s vibrant translation of the novel will be long cherished by de Beauvoir devotees and first-time readers alike.

Book excerpt: We can see as apocalyptic book that offers a rare text, true, perverse and full of light and darkness. We are coming to the end of 2022, country divided socially and politically, politics does not fit because it does not depend on its capacity, but on imperfect humans, to the point of a certain brainless atmosphere taking over the country, reaching mainly the productive and academic segments, including a small prosperous municipality that suffers constantly, from the evasion of foreign exchange in purchases and complete lack of knowledge of public economy by the pseudo managers installed in government headquarters, creating a new order with an imperialist air implanted by those elected that lead to a counterpoint to those citizens who fight every day for their citizenship and who do not align themselves with the ideological political activism of those elected on duty. These suffer unbridled persecution for not applauding the excesses and lies propagated to the most faithful residents of this land, creating a smokescreen to create distractions and continue with their misdeeds. History was subjected to cruelty, forced to alter the normality of its course, placing disinformation as the main focus to the point that the streets changed names, the date of political emancipation modified and mistakenly disclosed in accordance with the political interests of the president, the streets who historically gave rise to the city lost their names so that neophytes could be honored as if they were heroes. Misinformation has taken root and is consolidated. For barbarism, everything is valid to the point of celebrating the city's birthday on an unformed date, prohibiting the circulation of commemorative party attractions in streets where enemies have their business and the rulers attract to them the rotten attitudes without laurels and without victories that would in no way make any citizen happy who contributes to the development of the city. Book A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF ALTAIC MYTHOLOGIES IN CHINA

Download or read book A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF ALTAIC MYTHOLOGIES IN CHINA written by G. Namjil and published by American Academic Press. This book was released on 2023-08-28 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lending support to the search for the roots of the Altaic language family and pushing forward the field of Altaic mythologies and related topics, this comprehensive study of the early beliefs of China’s Altaic peoples is the first thorough, systematic academic treatment in this, as yet, underdeveloped research field. While discussing nine types of Altaic mythologies, A Comparative Study of Altaic Mythologies in China uses primary sources in several languages to explore Altaic myths’ origins, development over centuries, lineage relationships, and external influences. For this purpose, it compares the mythologies of various ethnic groups within the Altaic language family, Altaic mythologies with those of other cross-language and cross-cultural ethnic groups having direct, indirect or even no cultural exchanges with them in history, as well as Altaic mythologies with folklore, religion and other interdisciplinary domains of Altaic Studies by applying the theories and methods of comparative literature studies, comparative folklore studies and comparative mythology to a vast collection of mythological materials. As wide-ranging as it is deeply researched, this serious exploration of Altaic Studies breaks the boundaries of the previously closed research model, expands theoretical horizons, broadens the research scope, introduces a new mechanism for understanding myths and co-cultures of the Altaic language family, and offers insight toward the reconstruction of Proto-Altaic Mythology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rethinking the importance of Sigmund Freud’s landmark book The Interpretation of Dreams a century after its publication in 1900, this work brings together psychoanalysts, philosophers, cultural theorists, film and visual theorists, and literary critics from several continents in a compilation of the best clinical and theoretical work being done in psychoanalysis today. It is unique in convening both theory and practice in productive dialogue, reflecting on the encounter between psychoanalysis and the tradition of hermeneutics. Collectively the essays argue that Freud’s legacy has shaped the way we think about not only psychology and the nature of the self but also our understanding of politics, culture, and even thought itself.
