Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Insect Book: A Popular Account of the Bees, Wasps, Ants, Grasshoppers, Flies, and Other North American Insects Exclusive of the Butterflies Moths and Beetles, With Full Life Histories; Tables and Bibliographies Persons who love nature are apt to be long-lived and their lives are apt to be happy ones. In this country until quite recently few people have realized this fact, and while notably with the Germans, and to a lesser extent with other European nations, we find a love of nature fostered through early childhood, and while there are people of all countries and all occupations who know much about the animals and plants which surround them, and many who make collections and study certain groups as a fad or pastime and as a relief from the daily drudgery of life, in the United States little attention has been paid to nature study in the school and in the family until within the past few years. It is true that there have been Americans who were born naturalists and who have pursued their studies in spite of uncongenial surroundings. It is true, too, that almost every country boy is a close observer in his own untrained way, and that he picks up many interesting facts about his natural history environment. But even the youngster of decided tastes has been too often discouraged by his parents, and, further than that, he has few books to help him and stimulate him in the occupation to which his tastes direct him. Recently, however, a great, nature study movement has sprung up amongst us and in this movement the study of insects must play an important part. They are the most easily observed of living creatures. They abound everywhere - in the fields and woods, in the door-yards, and, unfortunately, even in the household. Subjects for observation are never lacking, and although some prejudice exists against them as insignificant crawling creatures and in large part nuisances and pests from a human standpoint, yet their structure is wonderful, their life histories are most interesting, and among them may be found a wealth of material for the study of broad life problems of the utmost biological importance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insects: Their Life-Histories and Habits In the following pages an attempt is made to set forth, in simple terms, the salient facts of entomology - that branch of science which treats of insects. It has been said truly that a man might devote his whole life to the study of only one insect without exhausting the possibilities of his subject. Consequently, a work such as the present must be in great measure a compilation, and I freely acknowledge my indebtedness to a large body of workers who have placed on record their observations concerning the structure and habits of insects. I believe that I am especially beholden to the writings of Lord Avebury, Professor G. H. Carpenter, Sir E. Ray Lankester, Professor E .B. Poulton, and Dr. David Sharp, but in almost every instance where an important fact or conclusion is re-stated, the name of the authority is given in the context. I desire to offer my thanks to Mr. Oswald H. Latter, of Charterhouse, for his kindness in reading and criticising the proofs of this book. My thanks are also due to my friend, Mr. Sidney J. Miller, who prepared for me the drawings and diagrams which are reproduced on Plates VII, VIII, IX, XI, and XII. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insects and Disease: A Popular Account of the Way in Which, Insects May Spread or Cause Some, of Our Common Diseases, With Many Original Illustrations From Photographs The subject of preventive medicine is one that is attracting world-wide attention to - day. We can hardly pick up a newspaper or magazine without seeing the subject discussed in some of its phases, and during the last few years several books have appeared devoted wholly or in part to the ways of preventing rather than curing many of our ills. Looking over the titles of these articles and books the reader will at once be impressed with the impor tance that is being given to the subject of the relation of insects to some of our common diseases. As many of these maladies are caused by minute parasites or microbes the zoologists, biologists and physicians are studying with untiring zeal to learn what they can in regard to the development and habits of these organisms, and the entomologists are doing their part by studying in minute detail the structure and life-history of the insects that are concerned. Thus many important facts are being learned, many important observations made. The results of the best of these investigations are always published in technical magazines or papers that are usually accessible only to the specialist. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Applied Entomology: An Introductory Text-Book of Insects in Their Relations to Man If one can judge from the answers to about fifty letters of inquiry sent to teachers of Entomology in colleges in the United States, the teaching of Entomology in this country at the present time is in a rather chaotic condition. Very few of the answers received show much in harmony in subject matter, methods of presentation, or even the line of training the students should receive by a course in the subject. The author believes that in agricultural colleges at least, two distinct groups of students need a knowledge in Entomology, and rather early in their course. One of these groups is composed of students who will never specialize in the subject but need it as part of an agricultural education, and particularly as a tool which they can use wherever insects are related to their special lines of work. They are not particularly interested in such details as the number of antennal segments in insects, the number of branches of the radial vein, or how important a pest on pigweed the insect is: they do not expect to identify insects beyond the order or family at most, relying on specialists available at the State Experiment Stations for such information. But they do desire a general knowledge of the broad outlines of the subject, and a rather complete knowledge of, and if possible, the ability to recognize particularly import ant insect pests they are liable to meet in the course of their work. The other group consists of those who expect to specialize in the subject, becoming professional entomologists. Their needs will, of course, be different from those of the other group, but an introductory survey such as will meet the requirements of the rest will give the members of this group an excellent foundation for further and more detailed work. The present book is therefore Offered as a classroom text for an introductory course in the subject, which shall give a general idea of insects, their structure, life histories, and habits, with methods for the control of insect pests in general, followed by a more thorough study of the more important ones found in this country. For use, the writer believes that in few places will all of the text be assigned. Instead, the pests of the country as a whole (treated in large type) and those of the particular region concerned (selected from among those printed in smaller type) would naturally be the parts used in any one place, though the book as a whole should be fairly well applicable to all sections of the country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insect Life, Its Why and Wherefore Having from time to time written articles on insect life for journals and lectured upon the lives and habits of various small creatures, I have been struck with the great interest shown by the public, and this despite the very large number of books already published upon Such subjects. To A recent investigation among the shelves a. Of one of our largest libraries. Has opened my eyes as to the reason of so much rm ignorance existing, with such a mass of Q knowledge obtainable It is that so many 3 entomological experts use terms which Z are totally incomprehensible to the uninitiated, while, on the other hand, some of the most pleasing little books upon the subject are written for children, in childish language, or mixed up with a mass of information upon trees, flowers, shrubs, etc., etc. I am venturing in these brief pages to place in the hands of farmers, gardeners and others interested, a few. Thanks to their usually imposing size to their severe and irreproachably glossy garb to their short, stout, thickset Shape to the quaint ornamentation either of their brow or, also, of their thorax, they cut an excellent figure in the collector's boxes, especially when to our own species, oftenest of an ebon black, we add a few tropical species ashing with gleams of gold and ruddy copper. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life-Story of Insects Among the manifold operations of living creatures few have more strongly impressed the casual observer or more deeply interested the thoughtful student than the transformations of insects. The schoolboy watches the tiny green caterpillars hatched from eggs laid on a cabbage leaf by the common white butterfly, or maybe rears successfully a batch of silkworms through the changes and chances of their lives, while the naturalist questions yet again the how and 'why of these common though wondrous life-stories, as he seeks to trace their course more fully than his predecessors knew. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the History and Natural Arrangement of Insects The shellfish above insects, we may strengthen what we have here said by the sentiments of others whose writings have exhibited entomology in its most attractive garb. What unsophisticated mind, not entangled in the trammels of_ system, when it surveys the industry, the various proceedings, and the almost miraculous works of insects, - the waxen palaces of the bee, the paper cottages of the wasp and hornet, the crowded me tropolis of the white ants, the arts, the manufactures, the stratagems of other insects, the associations and labours for the common good of those which are gregarious, will not at once conclude that they must be a superior race to the slug, the snail, and others, which live only to eat and propagate their kind l* Again, it has been well observed that the station which any particular group of animals holds in the scale of creation must be judged of, not by a fancied and often forced resemblance to the human structure as the only standard, but according to the ingenuity displayed in their organisation, and the variety of effects which may depend on it.'i' The most 3 careless observer, indeed, is well aware that many of the vertebrate animals are far inferior to insects, both in their instincts and the complexity of their structure. The vertebrate and the annulose divisions being thus the two most perfect classes in the animal kingdom, it necessarily results that they follow and blend into each other. We accordingly find, that the two circles touch at those points where the eel-shaped fishes come into contact with the Annelides, ' or red blooded worms the affinity of these groups being now so universally admitted, that we need not defend the theory of their union. On the other hand, the Annulosa are connected to the Radiata by means of the harm cles, whose long, stems, rendered pliable by innumerable articulations, at once place them within the definition.
